50 cl bottle from a six-pack brought back from Austria.
A cloudy golden beer. Big fluffy white head. Looks appealing.
Very yeasty aroma, some lemon zest and a little grain. A hint of sulfur pops up from time to time.
The flavor follows the nose but has an extra oomph of malt that rises through the yeast and a super pleasant grassy hop flavor in the end that gives a touch of spice but doesn't dry out the palate too much.
Nice and smooth, but with the extra fullness that is expected from a zwickl(unflitered, full of yeast.)
Very Very enjoyable zwickl, with a little something extra(fuller malt flavor and a touch more hops) that separates it from the pack.
If I could go back to Austria tomorrow for a few more 6-packs I would.

Cloudy orange-gold with a creamy and durable tan head. The head leaves plenty of stick lacing.
Aroma: Yeasty, earthy lightly spicy
T: Better than indicated by nose. Hops are less earthy and more spicy than in the nose. Hint of apricot.
M: Near medium body with somewhat aggressive carbonation.
O: tasty and highly drinkable.

One of my favorite lagers Ive ever had, I could drink this all day during the summer.
I feel like ive had about 20 of these at Map Room the last month or so.
Pours a cloudy gold with a huge frothy head, looks like a slightly more amber hefe.
Smells yeasty, slightly wheaty, but an overall very clean aroma.
Tastes as unfiltered as you can get, theres the slightly familiar fruity taste i cant put my finger on, yeasty, almost like wheat, but a clean crisp flavor you can only get from a lager. Hop flavor is minimal at best, theyre in there though.
Body reminds me of a hefe, much cleaner though, but overall heavier than most lager bodies, doesnt fill you up though.
I said it before, I'll say it again, I could drink this all day.

On tap at the maproom in Chicago. Served in the breweries glass wear.
A: It is a pretty cloudy looking beer with a light straw yellow color. There was a nice two finger white head that left behind a little lacing.
S: The first thing I notice is the aroma of noble hops immediately followed by some doughy bread.
T: The flavor follows suit with a subtle herbal hops, bread, and a twinge of tartness. There is hint of apples and light fruitiness as the beer warms.
M: light and bubbly this beer is really refreshing.
O: My first zwickel and I really enjoyed it. Light and refreshing with some substance to back it up. Good stuff.

Served in a tapered Stiegl 0.5L stange glass at the Map Room, at about 45º. It was explained by the bartender that this is a pretty delicate beer, with about a 3 month shelf life.
Massive head of creamy foam, rising above the rim in a convex arc. Copious lacing in a crown formation, great retention, the head was there for the duration of the glass. Pretty pale orange color, opaque, much like a hefeweizen.
Dusty wheat and trace mineral aroma, lagery but clean.
Clean and flavorful, pronounced estery notes from the yeast expressing apple and pear notes. Very yeasty with dry and mildly bitter aftertaste. Not much hop flavor, slightly grassy, but some bitterness is apparent.
Body is creamy as hell, almost to German Hefe levels. Smooth from the high quantities of unfiltered yeast, giving it a pretty full mouthfeel for a lager. Session-worthy for sure, the bigger body doesn't hinder it at all. Get it while you can, this will only be around for the season.

Draft at Gourmet Haus Staudt.
Stiegl's zwickl pours a milky opaque straw color. In the glass it's capped by a finger of light froth.
What a great aroma. Suspended yeast contributes a lot to the nose, spiciness and a note of baking bread. Hops are lemony and herbal, and the malt profile doughy.
Spiciness hits the tongue first as well, along with a note of lemon zest. The malt character is like freshly baked bread, quite doughy and hearty. The body is light but more substantial than Stiegl's Goldbrau and pilsner. It finishes dry and hoppy, hinting at zesty citrus and fresh herbs.
This is quite the beer, the best thing I've had from Stiegl so far. Shame it's not frequently distributed to the US.

Brought back from Austria in a nice 500mL bottle.
A: Poured out of the bottle into a mug, creating a finger's width of fluffy white head that dissipates pretty quickly, leaving nice white crown over a pale golden body, cloudy but not still very translucent. Orange tint. The head leaves hints of lacing, although certainly nothing major, but at least it sticks around for the duration.
S: Quite nice. Nice blend of floral hoppiness and sweet malts. Not at all grassy or dry, like a pilsner. I'd also venture to say there's something akin to orange peel in the scent, although it could just be the malty sweetness. Definitely would not call it anything like a weizen.
T: Very, very pleasant. I can't quite put a word to the taste, but I still want to go with fruity. The hops and malts are in an almost perfect balance, sweet and almost fruity, as I mentioned, but with a bit of floral hoppiness, not bitter and biting, but moderate and inviting. Each sip keeps making me think of oranges, or perhaps lemons albeit very distantly. The backend brings those slightly tangy, sour notes, like fruit, giving me the impression of a very complex and very tasty beer. Real nice. I seem to be going through this really fast too. Glass is almost empty.
M: Medium-bodied, with a slight creaminess. Carbonation is moderate and smooth. Not much of a bite to it.
D: Pleasantly surprised. After I read the basics of the Zwickl style I was somewhat tentative, not being a huge fan of overly hopped, grassy German pilsners. But this is nothing like those styles, being very, very well-balanced and complex, with a light-medium body and great taste. I would have no problem putting away a six pack of this, and as this is my only bottle, I'm sad to see it go. I sorta want some more...

Poured a cloudy but bright golden honey color with a fluffy white head.
Smelled like fresh honey wheat bread with some floral notes tht matched nicely. Taste is similar, with bread and yeast forward profile and a honey aftertaste that is not cloying but definitely sweet.
Good carbonation and mouthfeel that rounds out a well balanced, easy drinking beer.
Happy to find this on tap in Chicago and excited to drink again on a planned trip to Austria this fall.

A - Nice looking beer, yellow with a huge head and a bit of lacing that caught the sides. Very nice looking lighter beer with an unfiltered type appearance to it.
S - Holy corn batman! Smells almost like a mexican corn beer it's so strong, corn, corn husk, everything. A tiny bit yeasty with some mild hops but the corn is knocking me over here.
T - Taste like corn with a little bit of plant like finish. Tiny bit citrusy, with something absolutely horrible on the end which leaves me feeling like I have cotten mouth. Hate it.
M - Light bodied and crisp, with an appropriate amount of carbonation. Finishes entirely too dry though.
D - Can't stand it, get this feeling in my mouth afterwards like I've been drinking hydrogen peroxide. Couldn't drink much of it at all. My first exposure to this style, but if this is what they're like it may well be my last.

Enjoyed on tap in the Soldier Field South Lot during our tailgate before the Bears vs. Packers game. Special thanks to Matt from Laschets Inn for providing a half barrel.
Pours a hazy pale gold topped with a thick, creamy two finger bright white head. Superb retention and thick, splotchy lacing. Light fruit, hints of grass, floral notes, and fresh bread dough on the nose. Opens with grass and grain notes, joined by bready, yeasty malt, a touch of honey and sweet cream, apple blossoms, and apple and pearskin. Heavy light body to very light medium body. Silky mouthfeel with a touch of creaminess. This is one darn good brew and my favorite zwickl to date. Highly recommended.

A: Not the prettiest looking beer. Murky straw in color with a finger or so of white head.
S: A very pleasant honey-like sweetness with lots of bread floral hops. A subtle orange aroma to it, as well as some other fruit notes. Just a hint of yeast in there.
T: Really nice citrus and floral hop flavors to this beer. Plenty of honey and bread notes and a light yeast flavor. Quite light and refreshing with great hops.
M: Medium body and carbonation.
O: One of the better beers I've had in quite some time. Hopefully I get to have this one again.

On tap at the Uber. Can't say I ever expected to see this beer here.
The beer pours a somewhat hazy gold color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is complex and unusual, consisting of light dry citrus, light sandlewood and a hint of wheatiness. On the palate, this beer is just delicous. The flavor profile replicates the nose, except I get some light honey and cereal flavor as well. The beer is quite dry, with a refreshingly grainy and slightly bitter finish. What's impressive is just how much flavor this beer delivers for a 5% abv. lager. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a fairly long, grainy, slightly sour finish.

A full bodied lager with a lot of rustic character that harks back to pre-pilsner days. This leads to an increased bready, yeasty, and estery mixed. Low in refinement yet high in charm.
The Zwickel pours with a pronounced haze that's uncommon for today's lagers. The haze allows for a dense appearance of deep golden color with a shade of peach. A very foamy head builds upon the beer and persists with stubborn fashion and dense pockets of lace left behind. Honestly, not the most appealing appearance for a lager, but the quirks are expected and well defined.
Quite fruity and bready to the nose. Bold aromas of fresh baked bread, bread dough, and yeast all emit the nose; but then with a rich fruity note of peaches, apples, and zesty lemon. Seemingly quite sulfury, aromas of green apples and match sticks actually seem to brighten the nose, while earthy and spicy hops blend with alcohols and tickle a bit.
Flavors are quite full with bread or bread dough, yeast, and the pilsner-like sweetess of sugar cookies. Bruised apples and pears weave in and out of the malt flavor and sweetness and convey an old or aged character- somewhat stale. But beyond mid palate, the beer turns toward brighter flavors of crabapples and lemon zest for a crisper and cleaner finish than I would have thought at the start of the sip.
Medium-full bodied for a lager. With lower carbonation and substantial malt texture and sweetness, the beer sits heavily on the tongue and provides a full coat to other surfaces of the mouth. Going into finish, the beer turns semi-dry and cripens considerably while allowing for hop bitterness and alcohol warmth to combine for a near-minty sensation late. A linger of dough and fruit linger into the next sip.
It's always a charming session when rediscovering old world recipes and enjoying their results. Only a few tastes are necessary to understand the 'give' and 'take' that recent developments have caused to the brewing scene. Though I appreciate the cleaner, crisper flavors and textures of today's well made lagers, it's easy to see that this process removes some of the rich flavor that this beer exhibits very well.

For clarity's sake, there is no corn in this beer. It's brewed in Salzburg, and this region of Austria is 1.5 hours from Munich, and was once part of Bavaria. The beer purity law, or "Reinheitsgebot" is very important to brewers in this region, especially Stiegl. They have an excellent website and tell you exactly what is in every beer. This Paracelsus Zwickl contains local spring water from the mountains, organic Gerstenmalz, organic Weizenmalz, and yeast.
Apperance: Poured into a 0.5L glass mug. A medium orangeish-amber color. Cloudy. Sort of reminds me of a darker Hefeweizen with an orange tint. Definitely a unique color though. Built a decent off-white head which faded at a medium rate. Small amount of lacing. Next time I think I'll pour into a Hefeweizen glass.
Smell: Fresh & citrusy. Malts & light yeasty smell definitely prevalent too. Underneath all this I could slightly get some hop aromas. There's a lot going on for your nose, especially for a lager!
Taste: Starts a bit sweet with light malt/wheatish flavor, substantial fruity aromas which are on the citrusy side. The hops came out in the finish leaving a light touch of bitterness that helped round it out.
Mouthfeel: Light to light/medium. Like others have said.. almost like a hefeweizen, but crisper and cleaner. Carbonation was adequate without being too flat or too overwhelming. Kept a good 0.5cm head over the 20 minutes I drank it.
Drinkability: Extremely drinkable. It's not heavy and filling, but not a boring lager either. 5% and smooth. Definitely refreshing. I had a hard time setting down my glass to write some notes.
Overall: I really dig this brew.. it's interesting, refreshing & highly drinkable. If you're a fan of hefeweizens, and more complex lagers, than check this Zwickl out.

Tasted in a pub and restaurant in Passau, Germany. Poured in a tall straight Stiegl glass with slight "waist" and heavy bottom. Attractive appearance-- cloudy and light golden color.
Mellow, slightly murky flavor with decent maltiness. Rather tart. Hint of wheat beer flavors and a grainy sweetness. Hops are restrained but reasonably balanced. An unassuming, modest kind of beer but very satisfying. Good mouthfeel-- not rich but robust.

nothing exciting at all, yet noticeably cloudy. i wouldn't say it didn't meet the style criteria, but i guess the style just doesn't draw me. there was a distinctly new flavor, but it was not very pronounced

The colour is orange-pale brown (17 EBC), the liquid very cloudy. The two finger head is white and airy. It sinks slowly leaving no lacing.
The smell is yeasty-fruity with some wheat sourness. Some raw metallic hoppy flavours. Hints of lemon peels and dough.
The taste is smooth and creamy like a nitro-keg stout. Smooth flavours of dough, minerals, lemon peels, wheat bread and a growing clean sweetness. The aftertaste is, at the same time, rough and smooth with some light bitter flavours, a touch of vegetables and sweet fruit candy plus a very mild wheat sourness.
The carbonation is mild, the bubbles small. The liquid is very smooth without being sticky.
A beautiful zwickl with a lot of elegant flavours.
