Pours pure gold with a deep pile carpet of white head that leaves thick rings. Nose is clover honey and wildflowers. Surprisingly deep malty sweetness, like barley syrup followed by delicate hay, lemon, and coriander hops. Light, round, soft, some burn.

Fascinating contrast between heavy malt sweetness in such a light smooth body. Hops aren't enough to balance it, and it burns a bit too much, but enough to hold interest. Cloys as it warms, though, and burn + sweetness = a headache the next morning after only one, so that comes off the drinkability.

Edit: Drinkability now Overall.

500ml brown bottle, taken at The Cask Pub and Kitchen, London.

This light golden coloured beer could have been a regular Pils/Helles; at first it looked and had the smells you’d expect from a Munich breweries bier. However the smell began to become more pronounced, caramel and toffee esters began to merge with the usual grainy hop aromas normally found in Munich light coloured biers.

Sweetish and very easy to drink, the hops although playing second fiddle to the malts do assert themselves at times and make this an interesting and refreshing drink. The alcohol isn’t completely hidden, not quiet enough depth of flavours to blank it out, it doesn’t sit in your face, but you can certainly feel it below the surface.

Draught (1 litre in Augustiner Bierhalle):

A nice golden amber colour that is pretty clear and forms a white head that has good retention & leaves good lacing.

Like a helles but more fruity & sweet on the nose. It smells pretty good & refreshing, flower like aroma mixed in with some grassy hops, none of which are overpowering.

Like a helles but with a really nice, fruity finish and the high alcohol content was pretty well hidden. The beer had a nice, summer taste to it with the hops and hints of honey.

A light to medium bodied and a smoothness to the beer that makes it easy to drink,. It had a crisp finish & the carbonation was low.

This was a real nice beer, it made for light drinking even with the alcohol content being what it is. Not outstanding but a real nice beer, and the first of the style I have tried. -

A - slightly hazy but mostly gold and yellow
S - mostly like sugar and honey with some flowers at the end, but really sweet, smooth and nice
T - nice taste, alcohol is well hidden. Starts with malt, honey and sugar, ends with flowers and lovely warm feel in the mouth
M - medium to low carbonation with medium body
D - very easy and light for drinking on such a heavy beer

Had I a more discerning palate for german beers, I would probably enjoy this beer more than I do. But to me, it has the honey-sweet taste, extremely drinkable feel of a nice bock beer. I just wish it had something more complex to think about in between sips...

Had this on tap at the Augustiner Am Dom in 05/09. While hunting around for unusual beers, I stumbled upon some placards advertising this one.
Arrives a deep golden color with the requisite Münchener 1" head on it. They served this in a special pils-like flute that makes it look like a million bucks.
Not too punchy or boozy, this has flavors that are sweeter and maltier than either the helles or edelstoff, but without being too potent. There's a little hop character in there, but it's not really profound.
Goes down easy enough, and is spot on for the style. Usually I think Augustiner's beers are probably the best in the area, but I preferred the Spaten maibock to this one, locally, and I've had American examples I liked more, too. I think the flavor depth just wasn't there.
Still - worth trying if it's in season. If you like the style, I can see the mileage varying a bit on this one.

A sweetish pale bock, nice clean mouthfeel, malts a sweet and lightly buttery, with some lightly herbal hops to dry it out at the end a bit, some alcohol present in the finish, some doughyness, simple, but a nice pale bock in the end, the slight alcohol in the finish is its only fault(tap- GBBF 03')
