Presentation: 12 oz slender brown Euro style bottle, no freshness date.

Appearance: Bright straw colour with a two fingered white lace that holds strong, lace sticks all over the glass.

Smell: Hay-like grainy aroma with hints of grape skin and husk, quick run of herbal hop also.

Taste: Smooth moderate body with a crisp medium carbonation. Grassy malt flavours throughout, dry from the get go with lots of character from the malt. Flavours run from grain and husk to suggestions of grape skin and grass. Hops are bitter to the point of not getting in the way, still very noticeable by adding to the poignant dry finish.

Notes: Delicate without being complex, flavourful without being complicated. Clean and crisp with an unsurpassing drinkability.

The perfect Munich Helles Lager. To bad can't find it in the states. But always a treat when visiting Germany.

Beer, beer, beer, beer....beer.

Straw-colored appearance and very, very clear. Big, big foamy head. White, creamy, and very long lasting. Clings to the glass nicely.

Smell is faint. Light beer-y aromas with just a smidgen of noticeable hops.

The first thing I notice about the taste is light amount of carbonation. And the second thing I notice is the beer-y aftertaste. It's clean. It's crisp. And there's really not much else to say about it. Very, very slight hop presence.

Overall, though, this is great easy-drinking beer. It's a prefect way to start your day: a liter of helles at the Augustiner Keller, just down the road from the Munich train station, on a beautiful, sunny summer morning.

A nice helles. Nothing fancy however. Grassy, nice drying hops in the finish, lightly fruity. Finish is hoppy and dry and as i mentioned grassy. Also quite crisp aswell, relatively refreshing, softish, lightly fizzy mouthfeel, an easy drinking helles, but not a boring one, very pleasant(Tap-GBBF 03')

(Served in a imperial strange)
A- This beer has a crystal clear pale golden yellow hued body with a mousse snow white head that was a bit bubbly on top. There is a big carbonation of microbubbles gliding to the surface. S- This beer has a light green herbal and sulfur note with a very soft raw grain hint coming through as the beer warms.
T- This beer has a light pale malt hint with mineral water note to the soft Noble hop green flavor in the finish. There is a very light sweetness in the finish aswell.
M- This beer has a light mouthfeel with a tight fizz finish.
D- This beer has a very soft smooth light flavor but the sulfur is mild and blends well with the slight sweetness. The hops are not all pungent but still pretty light and dry. It is a refreshing crisp beer just a little drab.

Smuggled this bottle back from Europe. Had a buddy traveling through Munich grab this and meet me in Paris. Claimed it was his favorite German Beer. Surely upon first taste it was delicious. It poured golden with large amount of thin lacing that dissipated quickly. Slight hop smell, but standard beer smell otherwise. Seems like a German form of a domestic lager. Hell beer so light in color. Great Session beer!

"Ein maß bitte"
This beer was incredible. This beer was exactly what I dreamed it would be. I had it in the liter form at the Augustiner biergarten in Munich. Nothing can quite compare.
Smell: Smells slightly of bread, hop aroma to balance, but nothing too strong.
Appearance: Pale and golden colored, it was very clear
Taste: Incredibly clean malt flavor, again balanced with hop bitterness.
Mouthfeel: lightly carbonated, which makes it refreshing. Goes down easy.
Drinkability: It is clear why they serve it in liters: because you can drink liters of it!

Order one of the gigantic pretzels with it and you will not be disappointed, although all their food is excellent.

One of my all time favorites. I'm so excited, I finally found this Stateside for the first time.

Pours a straw yellow with good depth of color. Short head with good retention.

Smell is of grain and fruit, subtle and very pleasing aroma. Taste is smooth yet rich, crisp yet substantial. Both smooth grain, apple taste in the malts and a sweet hoppy finish like a Czech pilsner. While the bottled version isn't quite what I've had fresh on tap, as I recall, this is still a superb lager. A benchmark for the style, having all the smoothness and subtleness it should, but with more depth and complexity of flavor than its European peers.

Clear, bright gold body topped by a bright white head that holds OK but drops to a standard collar and whispy surface foam. Great Munich malt aroma and delicate hop background. The body is medium with a very fine and moderate carbonation that leaves it creamy in the mouth. The flavor is of rich Munich malts supported by spicy hops. Long malty finish. This is a very straightforward beer with a great Munich malt character. Quite an exceptional beer. Not complex, but with a great depth of character. Sweet, but also very well-balanced and exceptionally drinkable. Absolutely worth seeking out.

Most people living in and around Munich agree that this is the best local beer to be had. No need to add to descriptions of the taste with all the other reviews around.

It gets even better in view of the company background.
They do their own malting and are the only brewery to tap from wooden kegs at their beergardens and at oktoberfest.

From the cask at Augustiner across from Hofbrauhaus in Munich.

Color is a deep golden straw color, with almost, ALMOST, a hint of brownish green to it. Crystal clear with no sediment. Served with a strong think head that persisted for several minutes.

Strong flavors on the nose. Leafy with hints of citrus and a little grain. Only mild malt on the nose.

Bready with green leaf on the initial taste. Citrus elements don't continue into the taste. There's not much sweetness to it, but a fair amount of bitters on the finish. Not as balanced as I would have hoped.

Texture is full bodied, thicker than other Munich lagers. Relatively no acid and very little bite.

I found the bitterness on the finish to be a little overwhelming and therefore drinkability takes a bit hit.

Overall, I would not order this again.

From Munich, a very very great beer. My favorite German beer. I drank a ton of these in Munich and brought some back with me. I would love to be able to find this in America. The taste, like many of the other Munich beers, is very smooth, not heavy, but with a rich, consistent flavor. This is not a beer with a very unique flavor. It doesn't have fruit or random stuff in it. It is simply a great beer, a beer I could drink every single day.

On my trip to Deutschland this was the first beer I had a chance to encounter. I had just gotten off the tour bus and scurried around until I stumbled into the first restauraunt I could find. It happened to be this 4 star dig and I was severely under-dressed. I asked the waiter (using what little German I knew) what he recommended. He smiled and exclaimed,
"Augustiner!"

When he brought the first glass the first thing I noticed was the 2 finger thick head (and it stayed that way for some time). Before I took the first swig I got a good long inhale. Glorious. Taste: can't be desribed any further than delectable. The only thing that kinda bugged me was the stingy after taste (I took of in the mouthfeel category). Other than that I think this is a finely brewed beverage.

Munich Helles are one of my all time favorite styles. Not flashy like an IPA or DIPA, but a well crafted beer of this style exudes drinkability and the well balanced flavors of continental malt and noble hops.

Beer pours a wonderful deep straw color with gold hues. Leaves a nice 1 inch head in the glass with good carbonation.

Aroma is of floral hops and bready grain. The taste on this one hits the Helles style perfectly. Great mouthfeel, excellent flavor, and supreme drinkability. Satisfying and full flavored, but incredibly refreshing.

My sister got to sample this in person when she recently traveled to Germany, and then purchased this sixer for me when she returned to the U.S. because she enjoyed it so much and new I was a fan of this type. I can only imagine how much fresher her experience was, but this certaintly can't be too far off the mark. I'd get this one again in a heartbeat.

Poured from the bottle into a tall tumbler glass.

Bright light brass to straw body. Good slow rising carbonation, in great streams very fine in appearance. Head is soft white with a thin cap of foam of about half a finger while drinking all the time. Real nice looking.

Light aroma of malts on the nose. Pretty subtle, that classic doughy angle comes out just a little sweet.

Palate is extremely light and airy. Malt density comes with just a touch of honey on the mid palate, and finishes with a very slow growing pils density. Slightly chewy body with a light flavor and a hint of brightness. Nice body with some popping hop carbonation a bit. There's also a fruit orange taste to it on the finish almost as well which is real nice..

Overall a refreshing brew, with nice subtleties.

Nice light golden color comes through right away. Really tight head of white that sits on top for what seems like forever but then suddenly dropped off leaving it all bare.

Nice touches of light bready malts, caramel, light grasses and well rounded and nicely done hop profile. Warming brings out cereal grains, touches of light grass and a well carbonated and easily maintained profile. Extremely session able with an amazingly crisp and clean flavor, I had no issues at all with putting this one down.

Helles vollbier, lager 0.5 l bottle.

Clear (obviously) pale golden, a bit fizzy soapy white head, that does hold up decently, with lacing. Modest carbonation.

Malty and yeasty, with a nice balance of grassy and floral hoppyness. Earthy garden characteristics.

Mild bitterness, with a very nice, quick dry finish.
Very simple, but pleasant brew. A lager like it's intended. Good ingredients, i guess, and well brewed.
Nice one in this style.
Nice website too (extra 0.5 point added on 'overall')

Nothing quite like drinking this out of a cask in Munich! Unfortunately all of the bottled versions of this are lacking, however it is still one of most amazing beers I have ever had. If you like German beer, and you don't like the "cheap" ones, give this one a try, and try some more. This beer is downright amazing, I would never pass up this beer if given the chance.

Half litre brown bottle, best before July 2010, drank early June 2010 on a warm sunny afternoon in my garden. Poured (3 times) into a Veltins Pilsner stemmed tulip.

Pale golden, as you'd expect from a helles lager. Snow white foaming head on each pour, some lacing, but not huge ammounts.

Weak smell, wheat or straw type esters, otherwise nothing.

The beer is crisp and refreshing, but lacks body, the alcohol is evident from the first sip which makes the beer unbalanced in my book.

The sun makes the beers shine, but all that glisens isn't gold. This is an OK lager, but a long way from something I'd recommend anyone having while tasting German beers.

I found this tasting very interesting, as I have not had it for a long time. The presentation & appearance are good, as a typical German helles, but the "lagery" taste is present here in abundance in the mouthfeel - reminds me of an macro in that department. But once you get used it and discover what lies underneath, you start to appreciate it more! This contributes to it's easy drinking quality, because the aftertaste gives that grassy, fresh feeling that is indicative of quality.

Overall for me, this is a world class example of helles, and more to the point - this is what lager should taste like.

A - Bright, clear gold with a good sized foamy and sticky white head. Retention is decent and a bit of lacing is left on the edges.

S - Typical Pilsener type of smell with a bit of bready pale malt. Also a good amount of lemongrass smell too. More floral/herbal hop smells in the background.

T - Base of the beer is pale malt with a bit of bread and grainy taste. Sometimes this is in the background and other times it is more upfront. Good amount of hops present. They provide a bit of bitterness as well as some grassy, floral, and herbal taste. Also a good amount of tart apple and lemon provide a zesty taste along with some pepper. This spiced, zesty, and bitterness is always present, but sometimes the malt masks these. Good balance with zesty and some hoppiness winning out.

M - Medium to light body with average to slightly above average carbonation. Smooth and crisp with a slightly drying finish.

D - Good drinkability. Goes down smooth and refreshing. Good amounts of sweet malt and zesty hops.

Notes: Good, simple, easy to drink lager. Just a nice to drink everyday, session beer. Maybe not the most memorable, but I would gladly get it again.
