I found this tasting very interesting, as I have not had it for a long time. The presentation & appearance are good, as a typical German helles, but the "lagery" taste is present here in abundance in the mouthfeel - reminds me of an macro in that department. But once you get used it and discover what lies underneath, you start to appreciate it more! This contributes to it's easy drinking quality, because the aftertaste gives that grassy, fresh feeling that is indicative of quality.

Overall for me, this is a world class example of helles, and more to the point - this is what lager should taste like.

Presentation: 12 oz slender brown Euro style bottle, no freshness date.

Appearance: Bright straw colour with a two fingered white lace that holds strong, lace sticks all over the glass.

Smell: Hay-like grainy aroma with hints of grape skin and husk, quick run of herbal hop also.

Taste: Smooth moderate body with a crisp medium carbonation. Grassy malt flavours throughout, dry from the get go with lots of character from the malt. Flavours run from grain and husk to suggestions of grape skin and grass. Hops are bitter to the point of not getting in the way, still very noticeable by adding to the poignant dry finish.

Notes: Delicate without being complex, flavourful without being complicated. Clean and crisp with an unsurpassing drinkability.

Beer, beer, beer, beer....beer.

Straw-colored appearance and very, very clear. Big, big foamy head. White, creamy, and very long lasting. Clings to the glass nicely.

Smell is faint. Light beer-y aromas with just a smidgen of noticeable hops.

The first thing I notice about the taste is light amount of carbonation. And the second thing I notice is the beer-y aftertaste. It's clean. It's crisp. And there's really not much else to say about it. Very, very slight hop presence.

Overall, though, this is great easy-drinking beer. It's a prefect way to start your day: a liter of helles at the Augustiner Keller, just down the road from the Munich train station, on a beautiful, sunny summer morning.

A nice helles. Nothing fancy however. Grassy, nice drying hops in the finish, lightly fruity. Finish is hoppy and dry and as i mentioned grassy. Also quite crisp aswell, relatively refreshing, softish, lightly fizzy mouthfeel, an easy drinking helles, but not a boring one, very pleasant(Tap-GBBF 03')

(Served in a imperial strange)
A- This beer has a crystal clear pale golden yellow hued body with a mousse snow white head that was a bit bubbly on top. There is a big carbonation of microbubbles gliding to the surface. S- This beer has a light green herbal and sulfur note with a very soft raw grain hint coming through as the beer warms.
T- This beer has a light pale malt hint with mineral water note to the soft Noble hop green flavor in the finish. There is a very light sweetness in the finish aswell.
M- This beer has a light mouthfeel with a tight fizz finish.
D- This beer has a very soft smooth light flavor but the sulfur is mild and blends well with the slight sweetness. The hops are not all pungent but still pretty light and dry. It is a refreshing crisp beer just a little drab.

Smuggled this bottle back from Europe. Had a buddy traveling through Munich grab this and meet me in Paris. Claimed it was his favorite German Beer. Surely upon first taste it was delicious. It poured golden with large amount of thin lacing that dissipated quickly. Slight hop smell, but standard beer smell otherwise. Seems like a German form of a domestic lager. Hell beer so light in color. Great Session beer!

"Ein maß bitte"
This beer was incredible. This beer was exactly what I dreamed it would be. I had it in the liter form at the Augustiner biergarten in Munich. Nothing can quite compare.
Smell: Smells slightly of bread, hop aroma to balance, but nothing too strong.
Appearance: Pale and golden colored, it was very clear
Taste: Incredibly clean malt flavor, again balanced with hop bitterness.
Mouthfeel: lightly carbonated, which makes it refreshing. Goes down easy.
Drinkability: It is clear why they serve it in liters: because you can drink liters of it!

Order one of the gigantic pretzels with it and you will not be disappointed, although all their food is excellent.

One of my all time favorites. I'm so excited, I finally found this Stateside for the first time.

Pours a straw yellow with good depth of color. Short head with good retention.

Smell is of grain and fruit, subtle and very pleasing aroma. Taste is smooth yet rich, crisp yet substantial. Both smooth grain, apple taste in the malts and a sweet hoppy finish like a Czech pilsner. While the bottled version isn't quite what I've had fresh on tap, as I recall, this is still a superb lager. A benchmark for the style, having all the smoothness and subtleness it should, but with more depth and complexity of flavor than its European peers.

Clear, bright gold body topped by a bright white head that holds OK but drops to a standard collar and whispy surface foam. Great Munich malt aroma and delicate hop background. The body is medium with a very fine and moderate carbonation that leaves it creamy in the mouth. The flavor is of rich Munich malts supported by spicy hops. Long malty finish. This is a very straightforward beer with a great Munich malt character. Quite an exceptional beer. Not complex, but with a great depth of character. Sweet, but also very well-balanced and exceptionally drinkable. Absolutely worth seeking out.

Most people living in and around Munich agree that this is the best local beer to be had. No need to add to descriptions of the taste with all the other reviews around.

It gets even better in view of the company background.
They do their own malting and are the only brewery to tap from wooden kegs at their beergardens and at oktoberfest.

From the cask at Augustiner across from Hofbrauhaus in Munich.

Color is a deep golden straw color, with almost, ALMOST, a hint of brownish green to it. Crystal clear with no sediment. Served with a strong think head that persisted for several minutes.

Strong flavors on the nose. Leafy with hints of citrus and a little grain. Only mild malt on the nose.

Bready with green leaf on the initial taste. Citrus elements don't continue into the taste. There's not much sweetness to it, but a fair amount of bitters on the finish. Not as balanced as I would have hoped.

Texture is full bodied, thicker than other Munich lagers. Relatively no acid and very little bite.

I found the bitterness on the finish to be a little overwhelming and therefore drinkability takes a bit hit.

Overall, I would not order this again.
