Body appears a nice honey-colored orange/red with a thick, foamy head. Malty, molasses-like aroma; apricots. Warm, bread-like flavor; rich sweetness; smooth hop bitterness. Heavy bodied; smooth and velvety on the tongue.

Another fine doppelbock from the Germany. Excellent malt profile with a deep flavor and rich mouthfeel.

A: Cloudy rose copper amber that lets light through, thin head, no visible carbonation.

S: A lot going on here, chocolate, honey, a flash of smoke, roasted malt, and dark fruit comes out later.

T: Sweet honey is the dominant flavor. Took a little bit for me to pinpoint it and really surprised me.

M: Very smooth and creamy, very light carbonation, similar mouthfeel to Celebrator.

O: Murky visual, complex scent, surprise of honey taste, and too smooth for my liking. Easy drinking.

Maple syrupy brown with big bubbles and almost no head. Looks a bit lifeless. Smells mostly of Drambuie: honey, caramelized sugar, malt syrup, rummy booze and a touch of indistinct herbs and spices. Tastes pretty much as it smells, but with a weird, earthy sherry-like quality and a hint of something like licorice or black cardamom that reminds me of a Chinese apothecary. All of this might be nice in a beer with more body and depth, but this feels shallow, emaciated, and weirdly sour. Not like lambic sour, more like raw bread dough sour. Not a good example of this style, and in general a total disappointment.

Appearance: Beautiful Burnt Sienna color with a hint of an almost reddish or amber hue. Head was decent (around two fingers); neither overextended nor minimal, and diminished quickly after the initial pour. not a lot of carbonation bubbles.

Smell: Very full scent; the only flaw may be the overpowering scent of the caramel which at times obscures the molasses and eventual raisin undertones. That being said, the aroma is still quite good and superior to many doppelbocks.

Taste: impressive taste full of complexity; well accompanied by the smell. The caramel blends very well into other flavors (slight fruit, maybe a little bit of chocolate). The malt taste grows strongest at the end, while remaining more subtle during the initial sip and middle. The beginning sip also has a hint of raisin and perhaps a hint of orange. great from first sip to bottom of the glass. The slight hint of alchohol which many doppelbocks possess is overshadowed by the many flavors (my wife, who deeply disdains starkbiers actually enjoyed her sip)

Mouthfeel: neither bad nor extravagant. Surprisingly a little weak, as a little more substance would make this beer quite exceptional. While it has no negative overtones, it certainly leaves a little to be desired. Slightly carbonated at the open but quickly desolves. Definitely the weakest aspect of this beer.

Overall: a strong 4. A very well-crafted beer which definitely masks the 7.5 alcohol percentage.its fruit and caramel flavor, deep aroma, and smooth finish make this a very good beer. Definitely a re-drink.

11.2oz bottle with gold foil. Poured into an unlabeled snifter today, 10/13/2013.

As soon as I popped the cap, this beer started gushing. Not a good start. Pours a very dark yet clear amber body, not quite brown or black. As it was a gusher, it poured with a massive tan head that dissipated quickly into nothing, not even a collar. Just some small bubbles coming up.

Smells full of caramel and toffee, a little bit of alcohol heat and hints of honey. I don't get much in way of noble hops.

Tastes so caramelly sweet with a hint of honey, its solid. A little bit of noble hops on the back end. Not very complex but a very straightforward beer.

Medium bodied, smooth and fairly well carbonated. Leaves a fairly dry finish. Nothing special, a little bit of heat on the backend.

This beer is definitely not what it should be. I don't remember ever having it at Augustiner Bräustuben, but this is not up to Augstinerbräu's standards.

11.2 oz beer was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that reduced to a ring of foam. It is a dark crimson color with a little clarity with and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass.

Smell: Caramel, alcohol, toffee, and honey sweetness.

Taste: Malty sweetness with noble hops. A little bitterness to go with the booze.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium to full bodied, sweet, light to medium carbonation, and a little boozy.

Overall: A very solid doppelbock that is traditional with the style.

Pours a brilliant deep amber with garner highlights and a caramel head. This one was a gusher, so...

Deep toasty melanoidin notes, buttery toffee, burnt sugar, and light fruity malt character form the aroma.

Flavor reveals sweet, toasty kettle caramelization, with a nutty, toasted malt backbone. Notes of dark cherries add contrast. The finish is somewhat dry and nutty.

Body is fairly full, with fairly low carbonation and moderate alcohol warmth.

Very tasty brew. Great malt complexity. More carbonation would help.

Yay, Augustiner Bräu finally arrives to the West Coast! Broken from a six pack at Ales Unlimited. Poured out of a 11.2oz bottle into a pokal glass.

Pours a deep reddish amber color complete with tons of champagne-like bubbles rising in the glass. Holds on for a good long while 7.5%, but eventually the initial foamy white head recedes into a thin ring. Slightly viscous in character, but nothing too showy. Leaves no lacing. The color is pretty awesome for a doppelbock, but really I prefer them a bit darker than this. Well presented.

Smells of dark cherries and prunes overall, containing a huge caramel and clove backbone underneath. There's a sharp, pungent sweetness from the malts and booze at first, but soon the fruits come in a slightly medicinal, syrupy manner. Nutty and slightly grainy as well, although more subtle than you'd think. Not much heat, but the sugars do a great job at covering it up. Can't make out much bitterness from the hops, but they're there, I suppose. I enjoy the flavors, but a little TOO medicinal, even for a doppelbock.

Not quite sure how old this bottle is, but the flavor alone indicates to me that it's been sitting around for probably a good long while. This is indicated in the flavor, which is a nice slap of sweet, raisin-like malts, melding into flavors of cherries, extremely ripe peaches, and sweetened walnuts. To me, the best part of it all is the caramel/honey combo going on at the back, which rather than be overly sweetened, resembles a fresh fruitcake topped with nuts and caramel. The mouthfeel, as always with this brewery's offerings, is silky smooth and never too syrupy. Well carbonated, as a doppelbock always should be. I enjoy it, but I wish it were fresher.

Very great flavors abound, and the beer's easy drinkable feel and lack of heat overall makes this one I'd revisit if possible. However, I would prefer to have this fresh, as the hop character is really missing. Not as intense or malty as other doppelbocks, which is definitely a plus. Relatively balanced... Almost drinks like a helles lager on steroids. Worth trying for sure.

Pours a red amber with a very slight head. The nose is caramel alcohol, toffee and fresh bread. In the mouth the sweet notes of malts and sugars are balanced by the hops and alcohol. This is a very pleasant to drink beer, although if you are looking for a hops hops and more hops I suspect you should look elsewhere.

-I have noticed that many reviews seem like they are tasting different beers. The bottles are not dated and I have found this beer to taste very differently depending on how old it is. I have had this beer off the tap in Munich so I have some vague idea of how it is fresh. As the beer ages some of the sweet and bready notes vanish and the hops become more and more prominent. This means that what at once a fairly rich beer full bodied beer becomes a drier thinner and inferior version of itself.

I don't mind malty and actually prefer somewhat heavy beers, so YMMV as far as scores go.

Rich mahogany or cherrywood color with nice pale tan head and minor lacing. Sitting next to a cola glass, it looked almost as dark, but more translucent.

Nose of molasses and toasted brioche. Obvious malt presence, no hops aroma.

Strong (Munich) malt flavor. Notes of plums, roasted hazelnuts, caramel and light touch of cloves. Not overly sweet, given the maltiness. Very slight pleasant bitterness of unclear provenance--could be hops, but almost tastes like burnt sugar (think creme brulee).

Mild carbonation, medium body. Alcohol undetectable initially, but appears to come out in the finish. In general, the finish is almost bourbon like, with hints of raisins, smoke and slight boozy sweetness.

A perfectly serviceable doppelbock, went well with the weather, oddly enough. If you don't like malty beverages, even handling a full bottle might be a challenge.

Minimal yellow hued head on the pour. Mahoghony brown color with mild carbonation. Biscuity malt and raisins on the nose. Thick mouthfeel with an assault of malt and somewhat of a copper tasting aftertaste quickly fading into an alcohol tinged aftertaste. MALT!

Taste: very malty, with strong nutty and bready flavors,

Overall Impression: excellently crafted Doppelbock with notes of toasted bread and mixed nuts. An excellent beer for a malt lover.

$2.69 for the under 12oz bottle. Poured into a pint glass

A - A nice ruby red brown color with a inch of deep tanish colored head. Lacing is excellent.
S - Bready malts, Brown Sugar goodness. mild dark fruits, and a dose of molasses.
T - It's very easy to drink with strong bread malts, molasses, some plum goodness, and a pinch of sweet brown sugar.
M - Best part of the beer it's not as heavy as other takes on the style. More medium bodied somewhat chewy.

Overall not as drinkable as the Helles lager but still a very well crafted german creation. Worth picking up.

Pours a clear dark copper with a foamy tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, dried dark fruit, brown sugar, and molasses. Taste is much the same with lots of burnt sugar and molasses flavors on the finish. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with some very sweet flavors that make this one a slow sipper.

Augustiner Maximator has a thick, beige head, a clear, bubbly, copper appearance, and minimal lacing left behind on the glass. The aroma is faint, but one can detect a distinct fruitiness and a bit of sweet, brown bread. Taste is of sweet, brown bread, sugar, Japanese plum, and a mellow hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium and slick, and Augustiner Maximator finishes mostly dry, crisp, refreshing, and quite drinkable. Although there is an underlying alcohol presence, I would not guess it is at 7.5% by just tasting it. Overall, this is an excellent beer.

11.2oz bottle purchased at Total Wine in Spokane for $2.29. No freshness date. Poured a dark, cola-ish that becomes much more ruby-ish in color when held up to light. A thick finger of light tan foam drops down quickly to a foam collar. Sparse, spotty lace.
Brown sugar and toffee are what stands out in the aroma department. There’s a faint whiff of dark fruits as well, but it’s way in the background.
The taste is pretty much like the smell, but with a little bit of toasted nuttiness. Sweet and malty with just a hint of added complexity.
Medium bodied, with a slightly watery mouthfeel for the style.
An okay doppelbock, it’s not what I’d call a great one. It’s not nearly as complex as my favorites of the style. I’d save this one for purchasing when it’s on sale, perhaps.

A fine, traditional take on the style if nothing too extraordinary.

Pours a dark, tawny brown with a fair amount of effervescence.

Mainly a toffee or slight molasses aroma.

Heavy on the dark fruit - think dried dates more than raisins - with a bit of a syrupy aftertaste.

That aftertaste does stick around a little. Not refreshing & crisp necessarily but that's not exactly what the style's for.

Deep ruby red in color with excellent clarity. Poured with a short beige foam that quickly reduced to a rich cap. Toasted and caramel malt aromas with mellow sweet ripe fruit. Medium bodied with a delicate, rich, velvety smoothness. Caramel malt and ripe fruit sweetness up front. Floral hops through the middle and toward the end. Finished with a sugary, sticky sweet malty finish with a hint of dark fruit and floral hops.

To the Point: I can only drink one of these. Too rich and the dark sugary profile makes it a one and done for me. It is an okay to midland as far as Doppelbocks go.

Poured from 12 ounce bottle into a NB globe glass.

Pours thick and cloudy; dark amber brown in color. A thin light brown head appears but recedes pretty quickly to nearly nothing. The beer smells boozy, like burnt caramel, dried fruit, and licorice. It's definitely got that euro yeasty essence; looking forward to the first sip.

A great tasting doppelbock here, tastes of salty caramel, dark berries, with a nice warming alcohol level. The mouthfeel is light, and thin, not overbearing or heavy. Overall a nice tasting beer that makes me want to branch out a little more with beers from outside of the states.

This beer has been in my cellar for a while and I think I am going to drink it tonight. Poured into a plisner glass at 45 degree.

Appearance: A two finger head that is has fair retention. The head is off white, to a light tan head that is creamy and foamy. The color of the beer is a dark mahogany with some ruby highlights. The clarity of the beer is near opaque.

Nose: A rich caramel aroma that is kettle cooked with brown sugar, molasses, and toffee aromas. The malt is toasty with some grainy notes. Other aroma is alcohol, prunes and vanilla.

Taste: A very rich complex malt profile that is toasty and grainy. Caramelization notes with molasses, toffee, and vanilla, Other flavors is dark cherries, prunes, alcohol, and fruity esters.

Mouth feel of the beer is carbonated, slightly warm, and smooth.

Overall: The body of the beer medium and the finish is medium as well. This beer has a lot going for and it well made. The flavors are developed and the beer is complex. Really good beer for a dopplebock.

Pours a cloudy reddish brown with a medium quickly fading tan head. Aroma of caramel malt, yeast, some dark dried fruity esters, dates, raisins, black figs fill the senses. Taste is sweet caramel malt, bready yeasty notes, dark dried fruits and some sweet alcohol as well. Palate is a nicely balanced medium body with some good carbonation. Finishes with some sweet caramel malt, yeasty bready notes, some nice dark fruity flavors of raisins and black fig sweetness with some bitter notes on the end for balance.

11.2oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. No date on bottle.

Appearance: On the table, dark to tarnished copper. Held up to the light, deep coppery color with plenty of bubbles coming up through the glass. Initial 1/4" tan head slowly died down to a thick edge ring and the barest of skin across the top. Occasional island of lacing noted, but these would tend to slide down the glass.

Smell: With a swirl, grapes, fruity esters, dark fruits, caramel malt sweetness. As the foam dies back down, so does the aroma.

Taste: Toffee, dark fruits + grape, caramel malt sweetness underneath it all. The flavors run together such that I cannot tell you the order I am tasting them, but they're separate enough I can pull them out. The finish is surprisingly dry and roasted bitterness, but a very mild bitterness. The flavor does not linger long.

Mouthfeel: Good carbonation, cleans the beer right off the palate and the teeth. Nice thickness underneath.

Overall / Drinkability: A solidly good beer in taste and mouthfeel, but not as good in the aroma and appearance compared to other doppelbocks I've had. That being said, it's a tasty beer however....it does seem to have a narrow temperature window where the flavors are optimal. Towards the end of the glass the bitterness got a tad overpowering in a bad way as it warmed up, so one is enough.
