500ml serving in standard augustiner glass, vom fass, at the Augustiner Großgaststätte im Marienplatz

A - Agressive pour produces a deep copper chestnut body with a creamy think 3 finger head, lacing is very good.

S - lots of roasted rich malts, some bitter chocolate, breadiness..

T - Very bold in malt and bitterness, which softens in the aftertaste, to produce a slight toffee/chocolate flavouring, a good balance, maybe a little extreme on the roasted malt bitterness.

M - Medium body, high carbonation

D - Good dunkle, but my opinion may be askew, as i had already had the edelstoff, and weissbier before this, and was full of schnitzel! Therefore, maybe the bitterness and high carbonation, made me feel a little uncomfortable!
Oh well, just need to go back to Munich for another sample :D

A - Pours a deep reddish-chestnut with an inch of tan head. This drops to a thin layer rapidly. Looks to have moderate carbonation.

S - Rich malt dominates, toastiness, caramel, a little ripe dark fruit.

T - Bold malt flavour at first that turns to caramel in the middle. This lingers and is joined by some fruitiness.

M - Medium body and carbonation.

D - A decent dunkel.

nice head retention over a clear mahogany/burnt amber body. the aroma is of a bready nature, though i could justify it being nutty as well. the flavor is bready too, but not rich enough to be nutty—clean, spritzy (once when i was a beer rookie i described a dunkel with the word "velvety") this beer is not velvety, not should it be. the bitterness is minimal but hop flavor is good

A nice brown/caramel color with a faint ruby shade underneath a modest, bubbly head. Decent carbonation, but I didn't notice much lace as I enjoyed the beer.

Smells malty, rich and sweet, with a slight roastiness.

Put to the lips, the flavor was sweet, with lots of malt character, also some ripe dark fruits and a slighty chocolate-candy sweetness. I detected a very faint trace of hops only. Hangs quite well in the mouth, rich, robust and somewhat creamy.

A fine example of that catch-call "dark German beer", but certainly nothing mindblowing.

Appearance: Initially poured a pretty cloudy reddish brown color with a 1/4" head of small tan bubbles at first. The head disappeared within a minute or so to leave just a small thin ring across the top of the beer. No bubbles rising to report.

Aroma: The aroma smells like this beer may have some age on it. It has a super rich Munich malt character that is the dominating force. There is also a very dominant Melanoidin profile that is unmistakable. There is a bit of caramelly sweetness here, but once you get down to this point, there is some papery and vinous aromatics that hint at the beers age.

Taste: The flavor is also super rich and dominated by the Munich malt and Melanoidins. The flavor is really earthy, and the oxidative aromas are not quite so huge. There is a plum favor along with some other dried ripe fruit flavors here. There are no hops to speak of at all, and they must just knock down some of the sweetness. The balance is malt driven the whole time. The finish has a bit of dryness that is most likely imposed by the richness of the malts and Melanoidins. The age also gives it a bit drier impression.

Opinion: This is a great beer, but this particular example has some age on it. This is a pretty light style, so it doesn’t age too well. I really like this beer, and think that it is a shame that there is no expiration/manufacture date to go by. I will drink it again, and just keep my fingers crossed that it is fresh.

Augustiner Bräu Dunkel is best served at traditional cellar temperatures (50-55F). This Dunkles pours up rich & creamy into a house Willibecker (0.5L). A thick, cream colored head generously tops the deep reddish-chestnut brown body, but collapses gently leaving a halo of lace. The aroma is enticingly rich with lots of rich melanoidins & toasted grains that's reminiscent of freshly baked raisin bread with a slight nuttiness e.g. roasted almonds. Hints of fruitiness (e.g. carmelized raisins, fresh figs & plum pudding) interplay nicely against the cocoa & chocolate background. The flavor starts off just as rich with lots of grainy goodness along with some cloying (molasses) sweetness which gives into just a touch of underlying spiciness from the Noble hops that finally catch up to add some balance to this caramel/chocolate malt monster. There's just a touch of warmth in the slightly nutty-raisiny sweet finish. The body is medium-full to full bodied with just a perfect amount of carbonation. This would have to rate as one of the best damn Dunkels that I've had to date!

This is a wonderful, classic Dunkel from Munich's oldest brewery. Try pairing this one with hearty game like cherry-glazed venison steak or if you're in the mood for something more traditional then try a healthy plate of cold-cut Bierschinken (ham sausage with pistachios) served with soda bread, Butterkase cheese, thinly sliced sweet onions & radi (white radish) along with a cherry-ginger chutney. Here's to the dark side!

BB 01-06. Minimal head due to low carbonisation but a beautifull redbrown beercolor and totaly clear beer. Good nose showing lots of maltiness and good and sweet as one like this should. Very clean yeastpalate and smooth overall.
Great and full taste too as this one just aims for perfection . Great sweet maltyness with litle caramel, tiny bit of roast and a only slightly bitter taste. Strong cause of alcohol and noticeable too but still smooth mouthfeel that is enhanced by the low carbonisation. Yes this is a great exaqmple of the beerstyle and very enjoyable to me.

The beer pours a clear brown base with a perfect medium-high caramel colored head, great retention and good lacing throughout. The smell is of wonderful roasted malts.

The taste is a little smokey and the malt flavor is nice and bold. It is very nice in the mouth, a little harsh at times, but it's smooth so it counters that. Wow, a classic dunkel that deems the label as a true session beer. Straight 4.0 beers usually get a little less credability but I personally love dunkels.

Final Thought: A great session beer and another classic from the master brewery now in dunkel form via Munich.

A small, fizzy, tan head dies fast leaving naked the clear, dark brown, ruby highlighted beer. Minimal lacing. A super malty, nutty, sweet, rich, awesome nose. Ya! Sweet plums and grapes in front with a chocolate, caramel, fruity, alcoholic, buttery middle. A finish that's nutty, nicely bitter with a touch of tart grapes. A very nice, rich, fruity, nutty, caramel malt monster. Even better warm, when it starts to develop some cream.

First time try on this Bier....sampled during a post-Fest session with BierManVA and his friend Mark....

Has a luscious chestnut/mahogany hue... clear throughout... topped by a frothy, tan head which lasts well and laces nicely. Verrry mild nose, with some light malt...hard to discern subtleties here. Medium body, and medium tongue, though with a slight touch of roughness which does not diminish the overall feel. Nice caramel malt flavor...smooth, too. A smidge of chocolate, but real light. Finish is smooth as well, with mild hops balancing the caramel sweetness. Only slightly bittering. A decent Dunkles, enjoyed in the company of good friends!

Winy-like red, mahogany reflexes. Decent foam, with medium compactness, but a little scarce.
The smell is malty, honey, chestnut wood, toffe, light caramel, dried plums, vanilla.
After some while, a smell of corn flavour is perceptible.
Taste of malt and honey, with hints of fruitness (berry fruits and apricot). Delicate taste, not so net how you can expect by the smell.
Medium-medium-low body, with an aftertaste fruity (citrus fruit, orange, strawberry, apricot).

Doughy, toffee, chocolate and caramel. Smooth, soft mouthfeel, with some nice burnt toast on the finish. Slight sweetness from the malts at the start, finishing dry and crisp. A very nice dunkel in the end, nice full, yet layed back mouthfeel, mouthfeel is nice and round aswell (Tap-GBBF 03')

Fresh on tap in Munich.
This dark lager is a nice brown color, when held up to the light it shows deep amber notes. Malty flovors definitely dominate this brew, but they are accompanied by a bit of a burnt aroma and a hint of chocolate. Quite a dry beer over all. I also detect a hint of smokiness in the finish.

Appearance: Dark amber color, verging on black, with a modest amount of sediment. Small but thick and sturdy cream-colored head and excellent glass-coating lace, with faint carbonation.

Aroma: Pronounced aromas of coffee, molasses, earthy notes, sweet alcohol, and lesser toasted malt.

Taste: Begins with slight carbonation that gently flows along the tongue, followed by caramel, molasses, and quite distinct, warming alcohol. Finishes a bit dry with mild lingering hops.

Mouth feel: Smooth and velvety, quite excellent.

Drinkability/notes: An excellent beer, it whispers quality with every taste. Due to its rich character, it seems an ideal candidate for a dessert beer. It would also be quite pleasing on a dark and cold winter's day. A beer to be sipped and savored.

Beautiful chestnut colour, very good head. Aroma of caramel, dried fruits, oak and roasted malts, initially weak but improves as the beer warms up. Roasted malts and some caramel in the flavour, still a bit thin mouthfeel. Relatively short aftertaste without much bite. A decent Munich dunkel, but I did like the Neumarkter Lammsbräu better!
