.5L flask on tap at Augustiner Keller in Munich.

Clear dark brown with orange and red highlights, and visible carbonation. Tan head is moderately thick and quite durable. Patchy lacing left on glass.

Aroma: simple and light aroma of medium malt with some faint floral hops.

T: Nicely malty and flavorful; very good sweet/bitter balance.

M: smooth; medium body; medium carbonation.

O: excellent example of style.

500 ml bottle just slightly past the declared BB date (06. 2012). Dark coppery-brown body with garnet tint and good clarity gets overlain by rather thin light-tan head that dissipates. Sweet aroma of caramel, chocolate, bread crust and nutty notes transfers to the flavor. The beer that lacks any inappropriate intense roasted flavors starts malty but never gets cloying and finishes dry with hop-bitterness and mild nutty aftertaste.
Creamy with sufficient carbonation teasing the palate. Very good.

Served on tap in the Augustiner-Brau Beer Hall, Munich.

A - CLear, deep brown. Suprisingly small amount oh head, with little retention and some lacing.

S - Toasted malty, cereal grains, chocolate and hops.

T- Sweet, toasted malt balanced with bitter hops and hints of chocolate and toasted nuts.

M- medium bodied and medium carbonation.

D - Delicious beer. Worth having next time I'm in Munich.

nice dark brown, rusty brown in color with a good bit of cloudiness that seemed to settle itself out after a few minutes. A small but persistent head of off white formed on the top and managed to hang around for a good bit before settling out.

Aroma is deep and dark from the start. Rich dark caramel notes are all over this one. Roasted nuts, some brown sugar, dark frits, figs maybe? Really just complex as I even pull a touch of vanilla through after a few minutes. Really nice, and quite full feel for the style, due in most part to near perfect carbonation. This allows the flavor to roll across the palate and really just cling to every ounce of taste buds you have. Caramel, bready notes, hints of light spice are all leading the charge here as each sip seems to become better and better

Tasted this one in Munchen, Bavaria on a perfect sunny summer day at the Augustiner brau hall. nice head retention over a clear mahogany/burnt amber body. the aroma is of a bready nature, though i could justify it being nutty as well. the flavor is bready too, but not rich enough to be nutty—clean, spritzy (once when i was a beer rookie i described a dunkel with the word "velvety") this beer is not velvety, nor should it be. the bitterness is minimal but hop flavor is good sweet and toatly german.

Bottle (500ml) in Munich -

A dark mahogany brown colour with hints of a dark amber throughout. The beer is clear and forms a large, off-white slightly brownish head that settles & slowly forms a thick lacing of a head.

Roasted malts mainly with toffee and some general sweetness with hints of chocolate making this a strong, pleasant smelling beer.

An excellent tasting roasted malt & nutty chocolate flavour and mild aftertaste that is almost bitter free. Hints of toffee throughout make for a well balanced beer.

This smooth dunkel is medium bodied & very well balanced making it very easy to drink and quite crisp for a dark beer.

A really nice dunkel & a welcome change from my usually preference of lighter beers. This one was easy to drink & would make a great tasting session beer.

1001 Beer you must try:

On-tap at a local pub

A- Dark brown, tends to shine with golden hints if seen through light. Head is not big but nicely creamy, and has a decent retention

S- Sweet malts and some caramel. Some smoke hints bring balance, otherwise it would be way too sweet

T- The malt, very sweet but delicate, is again dominat, despite the low ABV. Then hints of berries and herbal notes. After some shock you realize that you were not wrong, this beer has a honey taste: strange but again delicate, and well balanced by other flavours. Good, though the aftertaste is a bit metallic

M- This has a pretty strong and round body for the style, let's say that it is almost a bock. Still it has the typical smoothness of a Hell. Carbonation is perfect

D- Extremelity drinkable and still decently complex. That slight metallic aftertaste takes half a point away though

Nothing that is worth high praises, but sure a fine beer

Pours cherry amber with a nice carpet of taupe head that fades fast with no real lace. Nose is sour rye bread and cherry Blowpop. Red berries and brown bread plus a bit of smoke with grassy hops to finish and a bit of flint. Dry finish and tingly spice linger. Light, crisp, some chew.

Not a huge amount of experience, so tough to say if this is insubstantial or just to style. Drinks quick either way, but I've had better and worse.

On tap at the Augustiner beer hall at the Karltsplatz in Munich.

Pours a ruby reddish brown with a big two finger tan head that leaves a little lacing.

Nose is malt and sweet caramel

Taste is heavy toasty malts, a little sweetness and a light hop bitterness on the finish.

Decent carbonation, not too much, make for a medium mouthfeel.

This is a nice drinkable dunkel, however the heavy malty body prevents this one from being a true session beer.
