341ml bottle served in 16 oz pint glass.

Pours a clear golden yellow, which tips you off that this ain't no adjunct laden pilsner. Nothing but a thin ring on top. No lacing.

Smell is malty - bready with hints of sweet caramel and sour fruit. Very nice, but where is the hops?

Taste is completely different from smell - classic pilsner hop profile is there (soft, bitter and floral), with the complex malt playing a nice supportive role.

Carbonation and mouthfeel seems about right. This ain't no watery pilsner, the taste lingers nicely on the tongue, with no carbonic harshness.

Tasty and refreshing. Each sip restarts the cycle of flavours all over again. Goes down way too easy.

A delicious pilsner with a complex maltiness to it. A bit more hop aroma would push it over the edge.

On a side note - I also recently tried the Paddock Wood Organic Pilsner (not currently listed for review on BA). It is a lot less hoppier, but has a ton of bready malt character. A nice alternative, but if given the choice, I'd take the Czech Mate 9 times out of 10.

341ml bottle poured in a pilsener glass. Bottle has a fairly plain label with a picture of a knight chess piece.

Clear, pale gold in colour. Off white head is fluffy and 1/4 on the pour. Recedes to a thin, patchy cap. Nice lacing down the sides.

Aroma is dominated by floral hops with hints of citrus zest.

Floral hops off the start with a subtle malt backbone. Blends seamlessly into a mildly bitter noble hop finish. Very clean, soft and subtle. Brief aftertaste is soft floral hops.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Silky smooth and soft.

A very refreshing Czech Pilsener. I have to say that this is much more drinkable than any other Czech Pilsener I've ever had. The flavours are noticable enough to keep you interested, but none is so strong as to throw things out of balance or harm the wonderful silky softness. I would prefer a touch more malt spine. I'll definitely be looking for more of these next time through Saskatoon.
