A - Pours a cloudy deep amber with a finger of off-white head. Decent retention.

S - Smells of citrus and floral hops. Malty background. Pretty low on the hop aroma for a double. Can't hide the alcohol even.

T - Best part of the beer is here, luckily. Nice and complex. First you get a very enjoyable hop flavor, citrus, floral, grassy and even spicy. Balanced by a malty sweetness, honey and bread. Quite a treat, although 2 sips in and I can already feel my head flushing.

M - Big bodies (typical for DIPA), a bit oily I find though.

D - DIPAs aren't high on drinkability, but in it's class this one is fair.

Absolutely superb example of an imperial IPA that strikes a near perfect balance between malt and hop attack. Its a hop bomb, redolent with citrus and herbal aromas, but this DIPA focuses on integration and balance rather than a pure leafy attack. Toffee malt warms the palate followed by grapefruit and bitter orange, medicinal herbs, wood, and an earthy depth. A syrupy sweetness lingers along with a satisfying bitterness. The alcohol is well concealed but does appear as you go in the form of a persistent slow heat. If there's a knock on this brew its the absence of more complex tropical fruit hop aromas and flavors but Paddock Wood still works a form of magic with good old Cascade and Columbus. Citra might add another level but why tamper with this sort of balance?

I will be biased on this review, as Loki is by far my favorite Imperial IPA. It manages to perfectly balanace it's ABV and hops to deliever a truly expectional brew. It might just be my personal palate, but I've tried quite a few other Imperial IPA's and none of them manage to find the balance that Loki delivers. If you manage to find this on tap, make sure you order a few pints.

355ml brown bottle with pry off cap poured in a pint glass. From a Big Box o Beer 12 pack mixer with 606, Red Hammer and London Porter.

Copper/orange/amber in colour and clear. Offwhite head is very thin on the pour and quickly recedes to just a thin ring around the edge. Little pieces of lace here and there.

Strong aroma. Citrus hops, herbal hops, caramel malt and alcohol.

Strong citrus hops off the start, quickly morphs into big chewy malts before the alcohol burn hits right before the finish.

Medium bodied with minimal carbonation. Has a bit of an oily quality to the mouthfeel.

Overall, one of the more balanced Double IPAs I've had. It's so drinkable that the alcohol kind of sneaks up on you.

Draft pint at Beer Revolution in Calgary.

This beer is slightly hazy, amber-orange colo. Foamy, off white head, which leaves some thin lace around the glass as it recedes. It has lots of citrus hop smells, but also some toffee or caramel malt. The taste has the same caramel malt, and lots of bitter citrus, earthy, leafy hop goodness. Low level of carbonation, smooth, slick (but not flat). Piny hop finish. Medium pushing towards full body.
More woody, earthy hops reminded me of an English IPA.
Good, I will have again.
