Appearance: 1 inch head, orange-gold in color, medium-high carbonation, hazy with sediment

Smell: flowers and caramel

Taste: flowers, caramel, and peat with light grapefruit.

Mouthfeel: bitter with a more bitter end--there is a sweet backbone, medium bodied with medium-high carbonation

Overall: What I imagine a mix between a Scotch ale and an IPA would taste like. I found the bitterness on this one to be quite cutting at times. Despite that the sweetness is always present. Interesting concept, not sure if I would get it again though.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. No other notable dates or notes on the bottle. Sampled on February 16, 2014.

I have only seen Olde Burnside brews in growlers or on tap. So this was bottled and it poured a very milky yellow color with a moderate white head that sticks around. The head fades.

The aroma is not so much hopped as it is riddled with butterscotch and bready malts. Since this is an IPA any hops are way in the background.

Light-Medium body

The bready toasted malts kick in more so in the taste and there is a moderate bitterness playing up on the backside but nothing that would make me think this was an IPA. I know English IPA's are more reserved and America IPA"s tend to be very floral and bitter. Buit this had little to no hop character whatsoever.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Harpoon IPA glass.

a: Murky gold with a huge rocky white head which receded slowly to rocky surface foam and considerable lacing.

s: Citrus

t: Hop bite forward over medium malt base. Bitterness lingers somewhat but is not annoying.

m: Medium.

o: A surprisingly good IPA, with more hop bite than many. After my bad experience with their Ten Penny Ale I was pleasantly surprised to find this so tasty.

A: pours a slightly hazy deep golden orange. A very thin off white head dissipates to a nice solid outer ring.
S: caramel, mild toffee, rise petals and grass.
T: starts with a sugary flavor followed by a big hit of floral hops. You know the smell of spring flowers blooming everywhere? That's the taste. Grassy hops with a decent hit if astringent bitterness. Finishes watery and clean with just a tingle of spruce tip bitterness and earth. The malt base is basic and slightly sweet.
M: slightly watery and the lower side of medium. Full body on the second half. Fills the mouth with effervescents.

A really nice florally hop flavor with nice bitterness. Clean and tasty, but seems over carbonated. A very drinkable beer.

Another part of the tap take over / cask wars at Backstage Restaurant in Torrington, CT this is a muddy brown colored ale with a white/tan fair head and adequate lacing. The aroma offers a familiar Burnside blend of malt and peat and sharp herbal hops. Very appealing. The flavor follows suit with wonderfully earthy malt and leafy-herbal hop bite. There's edgy peat and apple vinegar and a root-beer idea. It's medium body or better with a dry, resinous feel and
generous but pleasant carbonation. This strikes me as being Ten Penny with a decent hop quotient. And, unlike most English IPA's, this actually provides a satisfying hop bite. Very nice.
