I enjoyed this on tap at Parker Pie for the 4th Anniversary party for Hill Farmstead -served chilled in a pint.

The color is golden with thick hazed look with white cap and fine bead. The smell is lghtly sulfuric with mineral aspect and phenolic yeast accent with gentle spice and some herbal hop aromas. The feel is medium bodied with gentle note of grain with very yeast oriented texture which is on the dry side with spiced element and medicinal edge with light tangy vinous quality.

The flavor is decent with some mild malt with a good amount of yeastiness in the flavor which is both creamy and has a slight pepper and phenolic quality combined with herbal and grass tinged hop flavor with a mild alcohol and light bitterness that carries through. Overall a more traditional take on the style with high hoppiness combined with lots of yeast aroma and flavor.

750ml caged and corked bottle, thanks to Phyl21ca for getting it to me. The cork came off easily, with a satisfyingly loud pop and hiss, unlike, cough, cough, a recent debacle I had with a similar Lost Abbey contraption.

This beer pours a cloudy, pale golden straw colour, with a frightening amount of fast rising, puffy columnar white head, which slowly settles, eventually leaving some attractive layered cloud lace around the glass.

It smells of zippy, somewhat acrid yeast, zesty lemon peel, gritty, grainy wheat malt, white pepper, a subtle musty funk, and earthy, kind of surprisingly leafy hops. The taste is a much softer yeastiness than on the nose, with some mildly acidic lemon juice, clove and black pepper spice, understated wheat malt, ethereal funk, fresh-cut hay, and a leafy, earthy hoppiness.

The carbonation is really the lead here - it doesn't get any easier to pour or wait for the head to go down as things progress - some sort of bottle refermentation had to have gone on here. At any rate, the mouthfeel is actually pretty pleasant, the body medium-light in weight, and agreeably smooth. It finishes mostly dry, the lilting citrus and leafy hops doing an end run around the yeast and funk - America wins!

A rather tasty, and balanced (and least until the end, when the hops assert themselves) saison. Kind of a shame about the bubbles situation though - I shouldn't be this confounding to pour and subsequently drink a beer - so, unfortunately, the drinkability factor duly suffers.

Huge fluffy snow-white head with very good retention and tons of scattered lacing. Pale, golden straw color, very lively and hazy.

Aromas of lemon and sweet Belgian yeast immediately spring forth, balanced against a lightly wheat/straw scented malt bill. Slightly sharp and skunky funk aroma starts to cut through.

Flavor truly follows the nose: light and delicate, with a honey-sweetness, a not-quite-tart off-ness, a thick wheaty body (and associated flat aftertaste reminiscent of chewing wheat), and a dry bitterness, slightly earthy, with an even smaller hint of citrus. Not getting a significant sense of Amarillo hops, but that's appropriate to both the style and aging the bottle.

Surprisingly chewy for the style, medium feel overall, pretty drinkable, minor sting and liveliness. Creamy and overall very nice mouthfeel.

This is a pretty good Saison, and I feel an honest take on the genre, but it doesn't seem to do any one thing particularly well (except mouthfeel, perhaps). I would prefer it if any of the flavors had a bit more of a pronounced effect: more hops, or more of a rustic, non-Brett funkiness, more of the malt bill. Instead, it all comes together in a satisfying, but not overly impressive, package.

750ml corked and caged bottle into a Cantillon Zwanze glass. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a massive, 4 finger frothy white head with good retention. Beer is a clear goldenrod that reveals ample carbonation. Lacing is patchy, stringy and thick with good stick. Thin legs. Solid looking beer.

Nose is moderately soapy. Peppercorn, lemon, and cane sugar sweetness. Some coriander, Belgian yeast and clove spiciness too. Aromatic, clean and crisp. Nice.

Opens soapy. Belgian yeast, coriander and clove spiciness. A mellow malt backbone appears a bit towards the middle. Peppercorn spice and bitterness at the end with some foamy funky at the end. Finishes yeasty and sweet with a floral, spicy aftertaste. Pretty good.

Light bodied with ample carbonation. Prickly, light and refreshing in the mouth and goes down aggressive, dry, and crisp. Messy finish with a lingering, dry, sticky aftertaste. Real drinkable.

A decent beer overall but for Hill Farmstead, this one's a bit of an underperformer. Yeast bitterness is too forward and the soapiness is a touch overwhelming at times. Good complexity and nice feel but La Vermontoise doesn't stand out.
