A: Fairly dark brown, with a fluffy quite white head that stays around for awhile.

S: Not getting a lot. Yeast, some fruit, and a bit of sourness.

T: Yeasty spices are prominent throughout, with sourness coming in about halfway through. Aftertaste is an unfortunate metallic bitterness.

M: Fine.

D: I drank about half of this and then drainpoured it. Best by date was a year from now, so I'm not sure if I got a bad bottle or not, but I was not happy with this one.

Poured a deep slightly hazy amber with a few small floaties swirling around with a big fluffy white head that leaves sheets of lace behind as it settles into a creamy froth.Aromas are spiced like that of cinnamon and phenolic clove a touch of sweet cookie dough as well.A smooth creamy-like mouthfeel lends well to the rich flavors of this beer somewhat clovey and light sweet a touch of semisweet chocolate but not overbearing finishing with a slight dryness.Not a bad dubbel I dont drink many of this style,this one I enjoyed.

Appearance – Thick, dark brown effervescent body with a nice head.

Smell – Bready with compliments of light chocolate and maple. There are also come dates, plums, good tobacco, and fruits.

Taste – This is very well rounded. The chocolate malt comes out more in the taste, with the yeast still very much present and a tinge of alcohol to carry things along. The sugars are prominent as well, and everything is effectively blended for optimal smoothness.

Mouthfeel – Good carbonation and very smooth. This medium to full-bodied ale is thick and chewy.

Drinkability – This is a wonderful ale that went down quite well.

Update – I rated this a couple of months after first joining the site in 2003. I thought it would be interesting to re-rate it with a 2004 vintage after having reviewed over 200 Belgian Ales.

I thought this beer was good, but it didn’t blow me away like it did when I first had it. It might have been that the vintages were different or, more likely, that I’ve just developed a more refined palate. Either way, I lowered a couple of the scores a little bit and actually raised the Smell by half a point. It’s still overall a 4.0+ beer that I will definitely seek out and buy again.

Wonderful beer. 750ml bottle served in a goblet. Dark red/brown in color with a thick head that retains very well. Dark fruit, chocolate, and caramel in the aroma. Very yeasty and malty taste, with the fruits and a little coffee also. A real mouthful, but a great beer to savor. Alcohol not noticeable.

Presentation: Short stubby 11.2 brown bottle with no freshness date.

Appearance: Deep reddish brown, the lace that trails down the side of the glass in magnificent as well as the glowing clarity this brew show when put to light.

Smell: Some chocolaty and definite coffee roasted grain aromas, bit of malt sweetness, breadiness that is close to pumpernickel and mild phenols in the nose to bring more to the table for the nose to play with.

Taste: Crisp with a moderate body that holds well, carbonation is medium to high. Bitter twang from the roasted malts is coupled with a touch of hops and enhanced by the carbonation all at once. Sweetness is underlying add tries to keep the bitterness on an even keel. Maltiness is deep and complex with dark bread, roasted coffee and unsweetened chocolate. Alcoholic esters are tight and keep to a minimum, warmth from the alcohol is a bit slow but works in just fine. Slightly dry finish with vague phenols making themselves noticed.

Notes: Flavourful, sturdy and complex. All about the malt and hops without too much else getting in the way other than the occasional phenolic aroma and flavour.

11.9 oz bottle pours into a goblet a garnet brown color with a tan head that has moderate retention before falling into sheets of lace. Aroma is of toffee and molasses, with lots of fruity florals(banana), and a hint of alcohol. Mouthfeel has active carbonation and is medium bodied. Taste is toffee banana served on fresh baked bread. Alcohol is well concealed here. Pleasant fruity, candy, maltiness sustains all the way through, without any bitterness or distractions. Very enjoyable with a Belgian cheese plate sampler. Finish is slightly dry with a green apple aftertaste. Very versatile brew and nicely balanced.

Aroma : Some spicy alcohol. Figs, bread, nutty and toasty notes. Some phenolic spiciness, but not extreme. A slight honey like sweetness. A little lacking in complexity for a brune.

Appearance : Brilliant mahogany. A nice tan head that lingers forever.

Flavor : Nutty, malty and alcoholic sweetness. A slight chocolate flavor with grapes and figs very faintly in the finish.

Mouthfeel : Warming on the swallow. Finishes a touch on the sweet side, nice carbonation.

Overall : A very drinkable brune. if they kicked up the aroma on this beer it would be all the better. A great all around beer, but not one I'll dream about on my deathbed.

33cL bottle served in an unbranded chalice at home.

The beer poured very dark brown with 3/4th of an inch beige head. It appeared clear with some yeasty chunks. The head went down to 1/4th of an inch in about one minute and stayed on top of the beer till I finished it.

The smell has lots of roasted grains, caramel, a little hops and reminds me of Guinness Draught.

It tastes roasted and sweet, and has some dark fruits i.e. cherries, raisins. No noticeable hops, but bitterness/maltiness is very well balanced. It doesn't taste like most of the Dubbel's i'm familiar with. It's way more roasted.

It has a thick mouthfeel, maybe even a little bit creamy. Carbonation is medium and it finishes off in a balanced sweet/bitter aftertaste.

This is an abbey beer brewed with great craftsmanship. It's balanced and has an unexpected taste.

Poured from a stubby, brown 33cl bottle into a snifter Most of the dark, muddy sediment at the bottom of the bottle added in the pour. The beer was still rather clear, dark brown in color, with a small bone-colored head. The head soon died to a top coat but ample and attractive sticky lacing was left clinging to the glass as the level slowly reduced.

Sweet and fruity aroma. Sniffing this is the only way one gets a hint that the ABV is over 4-5% (except for some warming).

The flavor is mildly sweet with a slight bitterness and a touch of sour. There's a load of dark fruit over medium and medium-dark malts with a hints of smoke, wood, and coffee in the finish and aftertaste. Hints of plums, prunes, dried cherries, roasted nuts and fruit cake. Yum (approaches 4.5)

M: Full, creamy smooth feel with fine, soft carbonation.

O: A very satisfying and drinkable brune. The 8% ABV is mostly well hidden.

750 ml bottle with cork and cage served cold into a goblet.

The Val-Dieu Brown has a beautiful redish hue with good clarity. The head is thick and long-lasting with nice lacing as it settles.

Aroma is soft and malty with a mild bready yeast. There is a little caramel and spice to go along with it.

Flavor is much the same with a caramel-toffee sweetness and warming winter spice overtones. The yeast is probably the dominant unique flavor here but rich malts make the base.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with appropriate carbonation.

Overall a very good dubbel although still not one of the best. A good value and worth a try if you're into the style.

33 cl. bottle into the Val-Dieu oversized wine glass.

Appearance: Beautiful dark amber color, with lots of bubbles that show through if you glance hard. It's so dark red it almost looks like blood, and it's very attractive. Head curls up nicely around the edges of the glass. Lacing's good but not too clumpy, which makes it fade upon swirls to kick the recharge into action.

Smell: A crazy mesh between dark fruit and semi-sweet chocolate. Not burnt or toasted, it lets the essence of the chocolate aromas come out, and the mix with the dark fruit is pretty wonderful. Also some mild phenols, some slight hop bitterness, and a bit of vanilla. Great stuff.

Taste: Comes through well from the aromas, first into dark fruit, then the chocolate lingering before the finish, which is the meld of both, then a tingue of quelled hops to mellow out all the flavors lingering on the palate. A long finish, quality balance, and stellar flavors make this near perfect in my book.

Mouthfeel: Creamy as all hell without feeling cloying or thick, even though the body is pretty moderate. Carbonation comes through in the end to boost the creaminess a bit more.

Drinkability: Hell yes I can have another, and maybe another. The alcohol presence is hardly felt, and when it is it works well and is never even close to overdone. One of my favorite Dubbel's now. No punches are pulled with having everything over the top, but it's extremely well balanced and dangerously drinkable.

A decent Belgium and an easy drink. Lots of Lace. Aroma of yeast and bit of spice. Sediment. Bittersweet: malts and balanced with hops. Medium mouthfeel. Some sugar and carmel. A bit complex. Some coffee and mint. I have had better in this style, but this is satisfying.

This poured from a 750ml bottle smooth and greasy into a chalice, with a medium rust color and white yeasty head which slowly dissipated.

The immediate smell that hits you is a lemony-citrus nose, mixed with a sharp yeast and must smell.

Upon first taste, the mouth feel is medium and excellent. There is a slick-greasiness and the liquid breaks up quickly and slides down easily as you drink. The initial taste is a twangy banana clove with a polished feeling to it. A citrusy -must envelopes the whole taste and the finish is a pleasantly malty sweetness, and a bready dryness.

As I sat back and drank this, I got a feel that this was the table beer for a belgian monastery; not a grande reserve complex celebratory brew or seasonal feast beer. But this was an ale that was to eat supper with; to drink for sustenance and every-day fulfillment. That being said; this was absolutely superb; fantastically drinkable. The only detractor at all was some of the citrus or funky yeast twang; but as the glass warms and oxygenates, that, as well, is forgiven.

I was able to steal an original Val-dieu glass at the social meeting centre of the French speaking community in Voeren. And now that I'm back home I have the oppertunity to taste this beer out of it's own glass. When I left Voeren I had two bottles of Brune, Triple and Blonde. But by the time I got home only the Brune survived the trip.
This beers shows a darkish, copper colour. The first taste gave me the same experience as with the Blone and Triple, a rusty iron taste. This always makes way for a sour and malt taste thats reminds me of dark choclate and roasted coffee beans. The aftertaste gave me some faint reminders of citrus and mild spices. This beer is carbonised mild. The taste is very complex and it is one of my newly discovered favourites.

Ut vivat, crescat, floreat!

I had this served in a Duval goblet.

A:: Poured a very dark brown, almost black, with a layer of head that turned to lacing on the top after a short time.

S: The smell was sweet. There was a light hint of cinnamon and anise. There was also a slight hint of coffee. It was difficult discerning a smell from the width of the goblet's mouth.

T: Taste was slightly malty. There was a hint of caramel and a very slight note of roasted nuts.

M: The carbonation was a bit on the heavy side. Despite this, the beer still had a light feel to it. It didnt feel like it should be as dark as it is.

D: I found it drinkable, but I didnt find a flavor profile that really begged for more.

Poured from a very dusty bottle. Cannot quite make out the best before date but it looks like sometime in 2009. The color is a dark reddish brown with a large white head that has good retention. The head eventually settles to a thin cap. Moderate amount of delicate lacing on the glass.

Lacks a strong aroma. What I do smell is sugar and yeast. A little fruit notes if one concentrates hard enough. Alcohol is also detected.

This is a sweet dubbel. Some fruitiness is detected but mostly a caramel/toffee flavor dominates. Has a dry finish that saves the flavor. I do not get much flavor from the yeast but there is no mistaken this from being anything but Belgian. Some warmth from the elevated ABV.

A unique mouthfeel that I found to be very pleasant. Almost like a good champagne. Feels very light, airy, and robust. Gives a slight tingle but it is not harsh in anyway. It oddly works in this sweet, high ABV beer.

If one prefers the sweeter side of beer, this may be a good recommedation. Although it is not among the elite of Belgian Dubbels, it is still a good beer.

Bottle poured into a snifter. Really love Belgium browns so here we go!

EDIT: Located on the cork was "Val-Dieu 2/11" Assuming this is the bottle date it may account for my dissatisfaction.

A - A deep dark brown which I would nearly define as black. Poured no head whatsoever, thus leading to no lace nor retention.

S - Some dark fruits, toasted malts, caramel and spicy hops. Nice!

T - Fairly large beer with roasted flavors with a complimentary sweetness almost completely throughout. Finishes with a bit of warmth from the ABV and some hop bitterness. I cannot seem to identify a bottle date but it tastes as if it may be a bit beyond age, leading a loss of balance.

M -A nice full-medium bodied brown. As fore-mentioned, there is a bit of bitterness on the back end, against my liking.

O - This is a fair brown that was below what I anticipated. It may just be the bottle I received, but this is far from the better Dubbel's I have come across.

Dayton, Oh AleFest:This beer had a small sized tan head that consisted of mostly lasting fine sized bubbles.The body was cloudy with no carbonation observed.The hue of this beer was brown with a nose of malts and some hops.The flavor was acidic and bitter which had a lingering effect to it.The mouthfeel was very tingly, thin, watery and light bodied.There was good lacing with this beer.

I bought this brune dubbel from Brussel Sprouts the day before yesterday, to go. I like the label; it is this nice lake and a city on the backdrop. I served this dubbel in my Hoegaarden Forbidden
Fruit chalice. This beer pours out dark ruby brown with a thick creamy and durable head quite a looker; it smells grassy yeasty with some floral notes; quite different from many brune beers I have tried. The taste was kind of like the belgian blonds more than a typical brune; it was yeasty
but the yeast taste was not as strong and stinggy like many belgian blonds. Dark malts and very subtle sweetness in addition to a slight breadiness was detected as it moves into a grassy yeasty taste on the finish which is reminiscent of the initial smell; the finish was also very slightly bitter. I did not think I detected much of fruits in the taste but in the after taste I believe I pick up plums and grapes with some breadiness; a little fruity aroma on the nose as well. Beer was of a moderage body with a sufficiently high carbonation level; it was smooth but instead of creamy smooth which was what it looked to be; it was more of the watery smooth. It was a relatively refreshing compared to many of the belgian brunes as well. On the whole, I find that this beer was more like a blond than a brune though every inch of it looks like a brune. Quite interesting though I would have preferred it more like a brune.
