One of the less impressive tripels I've had, Val-Dieu still offers a fine product.

A: Not quite the appearance I expected. Thin head that dissipated quickly and an eerily clear orange...I expected a cloudier appearance.

S: A fairly pleasant smell of slightly darker malts than expected with a barely detectable level of hops.

T: This beer is good, but it is just not flatline enough, and not as good as the other Belgian Tripels I've had. There's not enough hops, and the malt is just slightly darker and slightly more excessive than it needs to be in my opinion. This beer has a sharp sweetness to it that is hard to describe, but not a shining feature...homogeneity is key here and this beer falls short in this department.

M: The mouthfeel is unpleasant due to the sharp, almost twangy sweetness, and unfortunately, this beer gets worse as it warms up, unlike almost every other tripel I've had.

D: This beer hides its high alcohol content very well but is still quite the force to be reckoned with.

I know people who swear by this stuff but in my opinion Westmalle, St. Bernardus, and Unibroue make much, much better tripels.

On tap at the House of Brews in Jensen Beach, poured into a chalice.

A –Can a beer look both hazy and bright? Yes it can and that is what this one pours. Think stark white head that left clingy lacing down the glass.

S – Floral, fruity esters, sweet and light.

T – Fruit comes through first with a nice light sweetness. Apples and pears. Touch of hops follows with just the smallest amount of bitterness. Compliments that fruit flavors very well. Light honey and pepper flavors and just again a touch of Belgian yeast to finish.

M – Perfectly carbonated. Tingly on the palate as it feels alive. Clean finisher.

O – Cant beat this. It’s a very good tripel. Easy drinker and complex tasting. Delicious.

A: Gold/auburn, foamy white head on initial pour into a tulip glass which resolved to nice thin layer, good effervescence and cloudy

S: Bouquet of honey and caramel, malty, fruit esters (a little banana, raisin, apple),

T: Malty forward taste, hint of pear/plum followed by a little fruit/honey then a hint of hops and a fairly dry clean finish.

M: Just the right amount of carbonation to prevent it from being perceived as syrupy

O: Excellent beer, will definitely stock up.

With the vast array of "Belgian-style" this and "Belgian-inspired" that; its refreshing to get back to basics with an authentic and time-honored taste that relies not on gimmicks nor reinvention, but a pure and simple ale done right.

Val Dieu Tripel jumps right out of the gate with bold fruit and supportive sweetness. Its bright floral aroma is mildly of perfume and honeysuckle while a crisp wafer-thin pilsner-type of sweetness smolders beneath.

Upon the tongue, its bracing effervescent springs to life the beer's fruity and spicy attitude. Lemons, oranges and apples balance against white pepper, coriander, mild cumin and its grassy hop additions. Champagne-like acidity keeps the palate refreshed and highly drinkable.

Finishing with a nod to hops and alcohol spiciness, its continued grass and hay flavors superscede any fruity-sweet upstarts, en route to an effervescent acidity and a quick aftertaste of peppercorn.

With a smidgen more sweetness and a barely heavier feel, Val Dieu's Tripel is nearly spot-on to most abbey versions. With all the parts to its taste coming together effortlessly, the recipe and brewer execution works to near perfection.

330ml bottle poured into La Chouffe tulip. A:
Golden, initial large thick head, very good
retention. A: Sour, earthy, yeasty with a hint of
molasses. T: Bittersweet wheat, touch of
sourness, notes of biscuit, slightly sour, fruity hid
the booze well. M: Light body for the high adv,
smooth, well carbonated, very easy to drink. O:
I’m coming round to tripels after initial
scepticism, this one ticked all the boxes, had
layers and went down well.
