Poured from the big 750ml. brown bottle with a Best before: 03/09 stamped on the cork, into a large Duvel tulip. Very dark brown with a two-finger thick, ivory floam cap. The head settles after ten minutes or so and leaves some thick clumpy lace, clinging to the glass. Very good looking stuff.

The nose is sweet and fruity with some spicy yeast characteristics. Some phenols creep through as the brew warms a bit.

The flavor is rich and fruity of over-ripened plum, fig, pear along with a thick caramel and toffee that coats the tongue. The finish is pleasantly sweet and warming...excellent full taste, hint of tobacco.

Good smooth, slightly fluffy full body that is a pleasure to consume. A very good, solid Quad, that I fully recommend. Chalk another one up for Belgium.

It's rare to see this beer and I've never seen it on tap before. Oh that's right, I'm at 72 hours of Belgium at Max's.

The beer pours a brownish color with great head retention and lacing. On the nose one gets chocolate, brown sugar and honey. The flavor profile replicates the nose and is just delicious. Very soft and creamy on the palate. The abv. is well disguised.

Fabulous stuff. Just absolute nectar.

Large corked and caged bottle, poured into a goblet.

Very nice looking, very dark brew with multiple reddish hues, a nice tan, creamy-looking head that is very small despite my efforts (?), but the small amount that I can make holds well into the end, with very very nice lacing - sides of the glass are all covered.
Aroma is pleasant, but less pronounced than most quadrupels; it is quite delicate here. Fruity, mostly berries, yeasty, sweetish malts mostly caramel, but you really need your nose deep into it, it is not coming out as I expected. Still nice, though.
Very creamy, even velvety on the mouth, with a pleasant taste, although similar to the aroma, not as powerful as I expect from a quadrupel.
Fruity, mostly sweetish and showing multiple notes of berries and caramel, with a reasonably dry finish that asks for more. There are also some spices coming and going, mostly peppery.
There are a number of better quadrupels out there, but this one is still very pleasant and worthwhile.

My sons and I enjoyed a capped and corked 750 ml bottle poured into chilled chalices during a Christmas dinner of baby-back ribs and homemade Boston baked beans.

A: It poured a dark amber body with a ruddy copper hue. pours a clear reddish dark amber color. The one to two finger head retained well before falling to a thick even surface cover that supported a consistent but not long lasting lacing.

S: It had distinct and bold dark bready and yeast aromas followed by sweet malts and caramel with hints of alcohol.

T: It was bready with dark yeast flavors that reminded me of pumpernickel bread dough. The yeast flavors were followed by sweet roasted malts that produced a very sweet caramel flavor and lots of dark fruits (e.g., plums and red graped). Each sip ended with a warming affect of the alcohol dashed with dark spices including cloves and black pepper.

M: It was a medium-to-full body brew with a smooth creamy texture and a yeasty sweet warming profile that finished with a sweet bready aftertaste.

D: It was full bodied and had a high ABV that might limit its functionality as a session brew. It is a sipper and a wonderful treat to share with friends. I intend to add it to my stash for special occasions.

The taste was surprisingly sweet (even for a strong Belgian beer) and lacked complexity as compared to other vleteren quads. I got some toffee/caramel/candy sugar, and a little alcohol. Maybe a little raisin. But not really much else. This was sort of like a St Bernadus 12 "light" in flavor -- it had the same top notes, but not much behind it.

Glad I tried it, and nothing wrong with it. But there are other quads I prefer.

I mistook this for the blond ale by the same brewer, and opened it without realizing what I had! Imagine my surprise after the first gulp, when those dark, malted candy sugars and intense alcohol hit my tongue. Whew!

I purchased this some time back, while picking up several items from Sam's in Durham. It poured a very dark brown into my Unibroue glass, and the tan head hung around for some time. Lacing continued around the perimeter until the glass was empty. The aroma is rather weak; there are hints of brown sugar, dark cherries and alcohol, but they're just not very strong. With a deeper sniff I noticed the scent of Concord grape juice!

The flavor is superb. It's full of dark sugars and chocolate, with a slight espresso accent at the finish. There's a nice warmth here as well, probably due to the alcohol. It's full-bodied and contains a little more than medium carbonation.

A very nice Quadrupel. It's nice to know there are so many good Quads on the market.

This is the second beer I drank on 30th Aug 2007, to celebrate the lives of John White and Micheal Jackson. I bought the bottle at the brewery shop this year and had been saving it for a special occasion.

Brown 75cl corked and caged bottle, the cork carries the best before date of 03/09. The cork was long and difficult to remove, so the bottle was slightly wobbled, the sediment moved into the beer and may have messed up the scores a bit!

Poured in a Duvel glass and a Hoegaarden Grand Cru one.

Very dark, almost black in colour, with a white head sitting proudly on top. If I looked closely, which I did, the sediment was washing around just below the surface and throughout the body of the beer, pity.

I could detect no aroma what so ever, which in its self is very strange, because the taste was full bodied and strong.

The taste as already mentioned was full bodied, it was also fairly sweet, very alcoholic and suggested plums, raisens and a light liquorice presence.

The flavours hung around in the mouth and although it is a strong beer, the thickness wasn't rich or pudding like. Can't put my finger on it, but something was missing. Which is why the drinkability is only a 3.5 score. The no show of any aroma doesn't help either.

Pours a dark brown with a 1 finger semi-fizzy off-white head. Smells of Belgian yeast and dark fruits.

Taste quite delicious. Lots of strong flavors here. Dark fruits - plums, raisins, etc. Coriander and anise spicing. Molasses. Port. Belgian yeast and Candi Sugar. Nice kick of alcohol at the end to remind you it's there. This is how I like my quads - strong, and never boring.

Mouthfeel is very rich, with a slightly sharp finish. Drinkability is good on this, despite the strong flavors and alcohol presence.

Highly recommended. A very tasty quad indeed - if not one that you can afford to drink every day.

Appearance: pours a clear reddish dark amber color. One finger head falls to a thick surface covering. Nice lacing paints the glass.

Smell: yeast, alcohol, and caramel candy are pleasant on the nose.

Taste: caramel, bread dough, plums, grapes, honey, spicy yeast, and mild alcohol tones are wrapped in a nice bitterness. This is a hearty Grand Cru.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy in body. Smooth throughout. Long caramel and bready aftertaste.

Drinkability: this beer represented the style well and is a slow sipper. Alcohol will catch up to you with this one. Nice beer worth finding.

Burgundy color, with a full and creamy foam that lasts. Lightly aromatic, with hints of burnt popcorn, brandy, dark fruit (plum) and the attributes of Belgian Yeast. Flavor is very rich and full, with extremely well hidden alcohol, fruit, chocolate and Belgian yeast.

Pours very dark, with very little head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is lots of malt, dark fruits, and a little bit of spice. The alcohol is barely present in the aroma and does not even come to the front in the taste. Mouthfeel and carbonation are very nice but this beer is way too sweet for me. I love quads but I think I would turn this down next time. Give me a Rochfort or Pennepot Fisherman's ale instead.

A - Deep mahogany with a medium head, bubbles clinging to the sides under the surface. The head is thick and clings to the sides of the glass.

S - Prunes, raisins, caramel malt and molasses. An okay aroma, abv is faintly detectable.

T - Malty, raisins, dates, a touch of dry grapes and alcohol. Aftertaste is faint linger fruitiness and alcohol. A touch of overripe bananas,

M - Thick, smooth, slick, very frefreshing and delcious.

d - Pretty good. I'd have it again, but I am in no hurry to do so.

Pours very, very dark -- nearly black, with only shy tawny highlights that show up with the liquid at a very low level. Strong Brussels lacing, little head. One of the darkest Belgians I've ever seen. Aromas are predominantly sweet, with roasted coffee, cola, dark candi sugar, and some bubble gum leading the way. Very rich, sumptuous aroma. On the palate, cola tastes lead the way, from syrupy sweetness right down to that tarty cola tang. Nutty at the mid-palate, then creamy, before drying out at the finish. Mouthfeel is full of carbonation and thick malts. Overall, this is a big, sweet, smooth quadrupel. I wasn't crazy about the cola flavors, but it's in line with style and well executed. Very good.

Dark purpley pour to settle a glazed black with a mediumish sized light sandy tanned whitened cap that slips away quickly to a hazey skim and good collaring. Lots of lacing in a solid coating sticks tightly in a wave of tiny holed sheeting acroos the snifter.

Aroma is soft and dullish of dark fruity sugars and purple grape juice, the dark malty fruityness begins to add up more as it warms as does some vanilla cola sweetness and a tiny hint to yeasty spice and black licorice. Nice, but I had to really stick my nose in it to get into it.

Taste is firm and soft with an alluring gradual pull into a sweet, dark, sugary pile of fruity pie filling. Purple grape emerges the winner at first taste with a smooth rounded tone of malty gooeyness that slips right into a melange of warming dark jellies and pastry fillings. Flavors and tones are quite acceptable in the realm of sweet dark malts, caramel, and light fruit tones, semi bready and sugary with vanilla, plum, fig, cherry, and grape. Lingers lightly for a bit and kinda cuts off before rebuilding a memory of lasting lengthy malt laden chewyness and slickness across the palate as it finishes with a crescendo of the warmth.

Body is firm, soothing, and just beyond medium with a thick lasting malty smooth reaction of boldness and chewyness. Has a late reacting finish which really grows on ya. Has quite the memory take back on the palate. A unique characteristic not found very often and which I found to be intriguing and fulfullingly fun and interesting. Warmth emerges even later with a hint of heat touching the back. The malts however stay the stage no matter the scene.

A pretty decent Belgian Quad here. Val-Dieu's Grand Cru is by far one of the better, top notch brews to be produced by them and worth giving a try. The unique effect of body from start to never ending finish in flavor and tone is the best part(heart) of the whole beer and the main reason to seek it out.

Dark chocolatey color, style-appropriate. Nice.
Big yeast carbonation in the nose. "Dark" spices - pepper, anise.
Good flavor, a touch understated for a quad, which can be nice. Dark malts, roast, coffee. Carbonated enough to be reminiscient of spiked Coke. Honestly, it smells like bread yeast. It's good, not overly complex but not a pretender. Full bodied, but hides double digits nicely.

Thick in the mouth, gets more viscous when warm. Good for the style and the aftertaste is less intense than others 10+% beers. Finishing the bottle was hard for me, not necessarily the taste just the heavy characteristics. Great beer.



Taste: mmmm-MMM!!!Espresso whispers, cola hushes, dark fruits and anise, black pepper peeps in, black and chocolate malt, and delicious Belgian malt and yeast. Mmm, darkness and spice aplenty! Yu-um! That's what makes this special, this particular sparkling spiciness....a bit rough in the texture, burrs against the buds to much, methinks...but then this unique and wondrous flavor creeps in ...too much...

Pours a dark brown that's nearly black, with crimson highlights. The head peaks at about one finger, and fades very slowly to a thick cap that remains throughout the entire beer. Lacing is a thick sheet, almost completely covering the inside of the glass.

Smell; lots of dark fruits with dates, plums and a little bit of some figs. Some bready malts are present along with candied sugar and a little bit of vanilla.

Taste; the fruits are just as prevalent in the flavor as they were in the aroma. Plums, figs and dates are all there as well as a touch of cherries. The candied sugar adds a nice, but not cloying sweetnees, and the yeasts add a bit of a dying chalkiness. A peppery spiciness mixes very nicely with a bit of an alcohol bite in the finish.

Mouthfell/Drinkability; the mouthfeel is full bodied, with a nice smooth carbonation, and the drinkability would fantastic if the alcohol was not so high.

We went to Ebenezer's Pub in Lovell, ME for a party, and Chris had a metheuslah of this beer. Besides the impressive presentation, this is a very good beer. A brown color with a medium head that lingered well. Sweet, fruity aroma. A nice vanilla taste, with the dark fruit and Belgian yeast present also. Lovely beer, very smooth. Didn't know it was 10.5% ABV until I was admiring the bottle.

Nice dark color, nearly black, with a great aroma, slightly fruity, slightly malty, slight alcohol aroma but did not overpower the aroma...

the taste was the best part for me, which is, of course, very important...could taste the fruitiness, malt and hops, and could taste that the alcohol was there, but again, not overpowering...very easy to drink

for a beer that is 10.5% alcohol, this is very smooth, and i definitely put it right up with the other quadrupels i have tried, 3 philosophers and st. bernardus...great beer, pick it up if you ever find it..

The cork tells me 09/08... I can only assume that this is a best by sept. 2008 dating. Pours a fairly dark black color, with ruby brown highlights around the edges. 1 1/2 finger bone white head has great retention, and falls into a creamy blanket on top of the glass, leaving behind abundant thick lacing.

Aroma is quite nice. Malty sweetness, caramel, and yeasty esters. Quite a bit of complex sugar as well as dark fruit aromas, a touch of cloves, and also a distinct smell of cooked sweet yellow corn. But not in an adjunct way at all. Perhaps the corn aroma is left over from the massive amounts of candi sugar that are present in the...

Flavor: mildly sweet up front, with complex malts. Slight toasted grain character, with good dark caramel sweetness. Nice raisony, plum and fig like fruit profile from the yeast. I don't notice much in the way of spice, but at the same time I feel that there is something extra in there. Again, a huge amount of candi sugar is present... mostly the dark candi sugar I would guess. Finished slightly sweet and lingers. Mouthfeel is heavy and full. Drinkability is quite good.

Wow, this is one of the better quad's/noel's that I've had in some time. Great flavor, well balanced, and enjoyable from first sip to the bottom of the bottle. I'll probably pick up another few bottles to lay down for a few years. I think that this will age very very well. Highly recommended.
