2008 vintage 600ml bottle poured into a City Beer Store snifter.

A~ muddy orange/brown with a tiny head and a little lacing.

S~ really sweet upfront, brown sugar, caramel, molasses, and toffee. figs and prunes to follow and some bready yeast.

T~ even sweeter here! otherwise pretty much follows the nose with more figs as well. some hop bitterness on the back end.

M~ super smooth, no heat at all! not too carbed but perfect for the style.

O~ wondering why i'm rating this!? Mr. Hill helped brew this batch! haha. having this for the first time after having Aaron you can really tell where it evolved from. i bet the barrel aged versions Shaun had a part in are just insane! hopefully some of those are still around!

Ive had this beer several times before, been about 2 years since i last had one, same vintage.
poured into a large snifter
Aroma- Definitely smells "old" any hop aroma has been squashed leaving a sweet brandy-like smell with a distinct yeasty funkiness
Taste- Heavy malt sweetness. Almost Wort sweet, with a pleasantly spicy booze backbone. No hop flavor but some bitterness that doesn't quite meet up to the sweet malt. Mouthfeel is very full
Overall: i liked this beer a lot more 2 years ago. It's definitely past it's prime. It's not bad but its getting too sweet for my taste.

600ml bottle, 2008 vintage, poured into a Nørrebro Bryghus Stemmed Flute.

The beer pours a dark burgundy color, hues of dark amber, garnet and tan, moderate opacity, with a khaki head, fizzy and fairly loose that dissipates quickly leaving no lace behind. The aroma is boisterous, plenty of bitter hops left, strong sappy presence that also brings out loads of rich brown sugar, malted grain, caramel and molasses with even a bit of toffee. Very harsh alcohol is also noticeable in the aroma although as the beer warms to room temperature, this is less so. The flavors are in line, plenty of sweetness, grains, brown sugar, molasses, toffee, caramel all making for a hearty richness that is offset fairly well by the harshness of the beer, potent bitter hops and astringent alcohol that like the nose, fades well and becomes more balanced as the beer warms. The body is nice, nice carbonation that keeps it lively but still coats the mouth very well and finishes very smoothly with obvious alcohol warming.

Verdict: A nice strong barleywine from Nørrebro Bryghus, certainly works for the style. Perhaps it's a bit young, even at roughly 6 years old, but it's still uneven for sure and the balance of flavors could be better. I easily enjoyed sipping on this over the course of an evening.

2008 vintage. aside from the crème brule from southern tier, this is debatably the sweetest beer I have ever consumed. I have often been critical of American style barleywines for getting way too hoppy lately, but this puppy could use some balance. it pours a crimson to auburn color, dense and bubbly too, with a prominent off white head of two fingers, lasting for several minutes. the nose is really sweet, like straight up brown sugar. I smell some sweeter malts, maybe even a touch of dryer red malt, and honey. the first sip instantly coats my mouth and fills my stomach, this is diabetes juice. any woody, earthy, or malt subtleties are run out of town by the sweetness. im not even sure how they achieved such a high abv with so much sugar left over. it must have something nonfermentable in it, but hell if I can pick out what it is. the booze doesn't help things, and is the only other notable feature of this beer. there is a full body and surprisingly robust carbonation, but its way too late after my teeth are rotting out of my head here. overall there must be a crowd of people out there who like this kind of thing, and it is well made, but even a small glass of this is too much for me. not sure it fits the American barleywine bill particularly well either, but it may be worth a try if sugar high and wasted is your go to combination...
