Thanks to LauraAndrew for sending this as a surprise bottle in a trade. I;d seen it in stores, but just never got around to picking one up.

Pours a lovely crimson, so hazy it's nearly opaque. Head is pink and active, just over a finger. It falls quickly to a coating on top of the beer.

The smell is full of spice and sour cherries...there's also some woody maltiness here.

Flavour is that same woody maltiness up front, along withpowdery sweetness, and sour cherry building quickly, and overcoming it. There's a bit of a medicinal quality, but it is not unpleasant at all. On the finish, there's sour cherry, some hop bitteness, and a lingering dryness. Very nice.

The liquid is hearty and slightly oily. There's a high carbonation here- which I usually do not like much- but in this style, it works well, and is pleasing.

I find this one very drinkable, though I doubt I'd make a session beer out of it. Much as I get annoyed at the people who hate fruit beers, I tend to like something non-fruit for sessions. ;)

Be well
-UF

Big, frothy pink head, requiring several pours to get a half-glass. Brew is a deep, dark red, opaque and beautiful. Head retention is impressive, always retaining at least a quarter finger of pink foam. Lacing is nice but quickly slides down the glass back into the head, leaving little trace.

Aroma is what you would expect: sour cherries, wild yeast, flowers, and light wheat. Very delicate, especially for a Kriek.

Flavor is more organic and sharper, more sourer, than many other Kriek lambics. It isn't particularly sweet. Up front tartness, cherry-pit-like flat sourness, extremely light funk in the background. A bit of smokiness and wood as it warms, with some light, dry pepper.

Consistently dry from start to finish. Noticeable pucker. Moderate/thin, but with a long, long finish, and a residual stickiness that is not unpleasant.

This isn't the Kriek for you if you need them sugary and sweet. It is, however, very well-crafted, focusing on cherries more than any overly sour, sweet, or wild aspects. If you're looking for something a little more organic and less sugary, you should give this a try.

This is Kriek the way it should be! Unlike most Krieks which are brewed for American tastes, this beer is not at all sweet. A wonderful, funky, barnyard smell gives way to an amazing tart and dry sip. The true nature of this beer comes out at warmer temperatures- drinking it too cold is a waste. The spontaneous fermentation by lactobacillus means this is a truly one of a kind brew which is unique to it's location. Think terrior for beer! While admittedly a "different" experience, every person I have seen take a properly poured sip has been amazed. This beer is worth seeking out!

Oud Beersel's Oude Kriek Vieille. 6.5%. Malt beverage aged in oak, with cherries added. Good solid pop.

A: Nice rosy pink head. Dark pink/light purple in color.

S: Tart cherry. Tons of acidity (moreso than the cherry scent, itself).

T/MF: Okay, wow. I was not expecting that. There is very active carbonation, in the mouth. And, the beer is BONE dry. The acidity is actually pretty subdued on the palate (for a sour beer, anyway). Really, I think the fruit and acidity is lacking something without the added sweetness to back it up, personally. Not bad, but not what I want in a Lambic.

Poured from a 750mL bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.

And, I had such high hopes for this one...

Aroma: Fruity slight funk.

Appearance: Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Pours a deep purple, like a red grape. Nice two finger pinkish head that drops to a covering layer.

Flavor: Tangy wine, sour on the tongue but not overly sour, nicely balanced.

Mouthfeel: Light and dry with high carbonation and slight sour pucker.

Overall: I really liked this Kriek, very wine like and carries a not overly harsh sourness. Would buy it again. Paid $16
