The few times I came here, it was like a dive bar minus the hard liquor. its a dark place that has people crammed around the bar, with scattered people sitting at the tables. I will give this place a plus for having a very cool Jukebox. The few times I came it was purely for having beers, so I did not sample any food. The selection was pretty basic, but had some good local beers. I must give this place credit for getting me out of my Newcastle and Guinness ways when I first turned 21. If you just want a beer, and don't really care about what it is, other then it not being a nasty macro brew, this is your place for sure.

I spent a week in Whittier a little while ago and was actually quite impressed with the beer scene there. There were a couple of good places scattered along greenleaf avenue. This was one of the first that I checked out. I walked in timidly with my Thor comic book to get some lunch and got surprisingly few odd looks. The bar has an area for live music and has a pretty classic old east coast bar feel. Even during the day the back corners of the bar get pretty dark. I ordered a local IPA and a burger which the wait/bar staff retrieved relatively quickly. (it was a light day though) the woman behind the bar seemed to have at least a rudimentary knowledge of beer, although I was not able to quiz her further. I was surprised by the number of craft taps they had. Macros were also present, but I was more than satisfied with my craft options. Overall, this is a decent place to get a beer, nothing spectacular about it, but if you're looking for a cheap burger and a beer, it's a good a place as any.

Located across the street from The Bottle Room, The 6740 is a bar and restaurant that is darkly lit and filled with all sorts of memorabilia hanging on the walls. I came during the afternoon and was surprised to see the L shaped bar filled with people. I found a seat and one end and debated what I wantd to drink.
About two dozen taps divided nearly 50/50 among craft and macros, and a fair grouping of bottled beers. O'Hara's and Rubicon IPA were among those on-tap, bottled beers included Kern River, Lagunitas, Stone, Gulden Draak, and Lindemans Faro(!). Drafts are served in 16 and 22 ounce sizes. My Rubicon IPA came out in good, fresh tasting shape. I would have liked to see prices next to the beers in the menu, hence the small deduction in the service score.
I also debated about whether I wanted to eat there. The menu is filled with burger, sandwich, appetizer, and salad options, and looked very reasonably priced. Uniquely, they offer Dodger Dogs.
The 6740 has enough beery options to appease. How it compares to The Bottle Room I can't comment on, because that place was closed during the afternoon.

Rustic Old school beer bar, posters, license plates, pictures plastered all over the walls, tables to seat around 30+ and bar stools to seat a dozen or two. Low lighting. Friendly local lunch group having some conversation and laughs...can't complain!
Beer and food price's were reasonable. pastrami sandiwch with NE spicy clam chowder lunch, and 2 16 oz pours (lagunitas -sumpin' wild and Firestone ale totaled $22).
Not super busy, but took orders right away and food came quickly enough.
Beer selection is a B-grade and food same. enough selection to be worth a visit from time to time to try something new.
Food was good. 1 visit here to date and I was very satisfied.
As I said above, the price of pours was reasonable, as was the food. I would not turn down an invitation to have lunch here at anytime! Parking always an issue in this uptown area. Public Parking lots are available!

A good place to go if you want some cheap grub and okay beer. They have a lot of the usual stuff that you can find pretty much anywhere (Stone IPA, Franziskaner, Newcastle, etc.). They have a nice local crowd and a cool sports/rock atmosphere with good 80's and 90's rock playing on the jukebox. Its also a little more laid back with the menu than the more pretentious food at the Bottle Room.
The waitresses are a little bit forgetful as well. Sometimes you'll be sitting with an empty glass for 10+ minutes before you even get a second glance.
If you want a better beer selection by far the Bottle Room is the place to go. And its not even close. I got some Pliny and Racer X on tap there in the same day, so that's saying something.

Came in to grab a bite and a pint with my pops. Very cool local hangout with a decent beer selection. Had taps ranging fro BMC swill to Hennepin, Angel City, Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball.
Nice bottle selection with Chimay, some Stone, and Avery represented.
Not the most amazing beers, especially with the Bottle Room right across the street, but the prices were right and the food wasn't bad. Definately a cool crowd of locals. The atmosphere is very relaxed. Great music played overhead so I felt very at home.
All in all, a fun place to grab a drink if your in the neighborhood.

My trip to 6740 was prompted by reading the reviews on here, and since I was in the neighborhood...
Looks a bit hole-in-the-wallish, and downtown Whittier is a ways off the beaten path. They do have a 50" LCD and a few other sets so that one can watch a game. 6740 gets big "ups" from me for playing about 10 Motley Crue tunes during the time I was there.
Draft selections are about 20 in number, but nothing all that exciting. My Franziskaner was not the freshest (not the worst either) and was prolly 8 degrees warmer than I would've liked. The waitress froze a few glasses for me-which was nice. Food was simple, reasonably priced and not bad at all. I did have a fish taco that was wayyyy too fishy tasting though.
Overall, I thought it an okay joint. I won't be hurrying back, but then when the hell am I going to be in Whittier again anyhow?

Came in here the other night with a friend of mine who has been here before.
Sit down, ordered chips and salsa to start off with and some beers. They ran out of Racer 5 IPA! So I went with an Arrogant Bastard - something close to my heart. They took forever to get our chips and salsa, but they weren't dicks about it. At least the staff was friendly and helpful, albeit forgetful.
They ran out of a lot of the beers on tap (and this was a Sunday) so we kept having to change our decisions. Luckily, Delerium was there and my friend had never tried it, so he fell in love that night.
The crowd is pretty decent. Nice looking girls in here every now in then so that's definitely a plus in my book.
The food was good, the salsa was hot, just how I like it. The fries were too thin but damn it looked like they cut up 3 spuds for our order. A big ass plate of fries. Good value.
A decent selection of craft brews, nothing super-rare I would have to say, but a good value and a good environment. I'm definitely coming back here again and hopefully they don't forget my appetizer!

6740 is a great neighborhood bar. People are generally friendly and it's almost all locals all the time.
Typical bar food but done better than most places: I really like their buffalo hamburger. The food is inexpensive. It's definately a place where you can go to drink and not feel like you need to order food.
Of their 25 or so taps, expect to find your big domestics, 5-10 British imports (Boddingtons, Guinness, Belhaven, Harp, Bass so on), a couple German/Czech and 5 decent local micro brews. I usually have which ever Laganitas they have on tap. Last week I had a pint of hairy eyeball, which was perfect for evening.
The staff is generally attentive and always plesant.
One thing that bugs me is the bathroom situation. A female and male bathroom, each a lock-the-door type bathroom. The line can easily get 5 people deep pretty quickly.
If you're in Uptown Whittier for a date and you don't want to spend the whole night in the bar I suggest you hit up Phlight (awesome Tapas and decent bottle selection www.phlightrestaurant.com/) a block away and head to 6740 after dinner.
