This beer was an orange/red color with a pretty good-sized white head and a lot of lacing. The aroma was mainly citrus. Taste was a little more balance, with both grapefruit and malt coming through. The hops are the thing, though, and you're not going to want to drink a lot of these in one sitting.

A- Clear copper with lots of carbonation bubbles coming through. 1/2 inch very off white head of tiny bubbles fades quickly into a thin film leaving no lacing.

S- Light fruitiness of berries, apples and bit of citrus. Some pine and sweet malt also comes through.

T- Sweet and fruity with English yeast character and a bit of bready malt. Only a moderate hop character with some citrus, pine and tropical fruits. Hop bitterness in the back comes through just enough to round out the palate.

M- A bit high in body but with sprightly and refreshing carbonation throughout nicely filling the mouth.

D- Very enjoyable and refreshing without being over the top bitter or hop forward. Might not be a typical IPA but works well with what it is and gives a good overall impression that will bring me back for more. I think I'll have one now in fact.

Served on tap in pint glass.

Apperance: Darker amber. Off white head about two fingers thick. Mild lacing on thr glass.

Smell: Hops, citrus, and pine notes.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Not a smooth, a bit grainy. Medium bodied. Taste of bitter hops and pine, very faint citrus flavor.

Overall: This was an OK IPA, I would have it again.

Received as part of April shipment of my Beer of the Month club.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Slightly hazy reddish amber with very thin head.

Smell: Very mild malt smell, kind of English. Where is the hop smell?

Taste: Light English malts with nice hop presence that leaves a grapefruit bitter aftertaste that slowly builds. For an IPA, it really isn't all that bitter - more balanced.

Feel: Low carbonation and relatively light body. Dry finish. Once again, very English.

Drinkability: Pleasant, easy drinking ale. Nothing stands out too much, but I like it and could easily enjoy another.

This is an English IPA, not an American IPA. It amazes me how many beers have been incorrectly categorized.

Cape Ann- Fisherman's IPA

A- Dark copper brown with a decent size head and good lacing.
S- Sweet pine hops and malt.
T- Sweet caramel malt with a good balance of pine hops slighty metallic in the end.
M- Sweet up front with a malty bitter body and a hum-drum finish.

Overall- Nothing spectacular here but this could easily be a beer for an all day affair.

This is a bright orange-hued amber, very vibrant with big carboantion and many little bubbles supporting this fluffy, but smooth crown that has amazing retention.

The aroma is of sweet, honey-soaked malt upfront and a big herbal, floral and slightly fruity hop smell. Very, very nice.

The smooth but crisp and sweet malt flavor is very upfront and rather complex for this style. The hop edge is also huge, although mostly intense herbal effects with floral-sweet and slight fruitiness underneath. Nice balance.

This feels medium bodied, more smooth and hefty...but also crisp as hell. Very nice feel.

This one's a winner.

Bottle courtesy of csmiley. Thanks a ton.

Appearance: Whoa! It's readily apparent that this one suffers from over-carbonation. It's a nice caramel color mixed with plenty of garnet. The head is way off the chain. It's off-white and a ridiculous 4+ fingers deep. Wow. It's so big it's annoying. Obviously, it took a while to dissipate and left waves of lace clinging to the glass.

Smell: Up front, it's sweet and malty smelling. Smells biscuit-like. Interesting. There's some fruit aromas following it up. Smells mostly like lemon and light pineapple. Hops are far more faint than they should be. They smell primarily floral and earthy. This is a peculiar smelling IPA. I'm not sure I've ever smelled one like it. It doesn't exactly have all the earmarks you'd ordinarily expect. It's even a little underpowered to boot. Very average.

Taste: Wow. I'm really having a tough time with the American IPA label. It's a little sweet and features a strong toasted malt flavor. It is yeasty and biscuity. Very peculiar for the style. There is a floral hope flavor that's earthy and even a little grainy. It's a little bitter, but it's not even close to having the punch it needs. Very disappointing. There are some light grapefruit, pineapple, and lemon flavors that emerge late. It does have a dry, bitter flavor that kicks in on the tail. But, it's almost unpleasant. Definitely not working. No alcohol is noted. It finishes dry, leaving a bitter taste lingering.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: It's medium bodied, but is nowhere even close to smooth. Carbonation is way too high and severely hinders the feel. Drinkability is very average. I'm not liking the flavor and there's far superior American IPAs on the market to spend too much time on this one.

Fisherman's IPA needs a great deal of work. It's an oddball IPA that's off the mark. The biggest problem is its severe over-carbonation. It's way too much. That coupled with the excessive malts and lack of good hop flavor render it a little below average. This one needs to go back to the drawing board. It's simply not a good representation of the style.

Picked up a single from Abe's. Pours a clear amber with a tall head. Man, this beer is plain. It doesn't have any obvious marks of being old, so assuming this is fresh beer I have to say I'm pretty unimpressed. There are no flaws, but the hops are plain, dull citrus juice in the flavor and pine/grapefruit aroma. It's a decent amber ale, and drinkable, but no IPA.

This is not your average IPA. I really dont know what it is exactly, but it is not bad at all!

A- Dark cloudy brown amber. 2 finger white head and nice spider web lace.

S- Smell was bready and citrusy with a faint caramel sweetness not too far behind in the nose.

T- Taste was metallic and bready. Hops were grapefruitish and tropical citrusy. Caramel and other sticky candy like flavors.

M- Ehh. Unfortunately this was very light bodied and somewhat watered down for an IPA. Highly carbonated.

D- I'll surely have one or two of these at the bar but I wouldn't go seeking it out. This is pretty good.

A: The beer poured a light ruby-orange color with a bubbly dirty white head. Visible carbonation was very light.

S: The nose was lightly hopped with fresh citrus and pine.

T: The initial flavor was hoppy with dried grapefruit, pine and a touch of malty lacing on the tongue. The beer finished with a dry, floral hoppiness.

M: The mouthful was light with fresh pine and citrus hopping coming through.

D: Overall a moderately west coast hopped ipa, with limited complexity but big on dry hopping. nothing exciting, just a middle of the road "just to say we have an ipa" beer.

I got this as part of a beer of the month club. Not an unpleasant beer, but average for an IPA. Not one I would grab off the shelf if I were shopping, purely because there are so many excellent offerings, why settle for one that is just ok.

Appearance is a nice, copper, and the aroma is hoppy and floral, but not as hoppy as I like my IPAs. Taste is not horrible, but nothing to write home about. It's a drinkable beer, like I said, not the best IPA, not the worst.
