A hard down the center pour yields a thin tan head atop a mostly opaque dark brown stout. Lacing is minimal as the head quickly dissipates.

Aroma is a subtly roasty malt, a cold weak coffee, some light spicing and a vegetable note that I can't really say is pleasant or not. The pie spice is a little more evident in the flavor, and the veggie is not there at all (thankfully). A mild roastiness accompanies some bitter chocolate which is quite complimentary to the spicing. Finishes a bit on the bitter side, but none of these flavors are bold or in your face in any way. It's all fairly mild and subtle.

This beer has some body, with noticeable viscosity on the glass. not at all filling though, again staying with the subtle theme. Would go nicely with a piece of pumpkin pie or even a scoop of ice cream.

Interesting take on a pumpkin beer.

Tan head that requires a little encouragement on the pour, then dissipates. Black; opaque.

Toffee immediately present. Chocolate. Fruitiness--raspberry comes to mind. Little hop prevalence, unless the fruitiness is hop-derived. Not much pumpkin--though detectable, it comes across almost as an off-flavor.

Roastiness upfront, then chocolate, then pumpkin toward the end, with the roasty malt pronounced throughout. Hop flavor at a minimum, with bitterness very well balanced. A little sweet, but not detracting.

Carbonation reignites in the mouth, with a pleasant warmth & creaminess.

Delicious example of an American stout, with the roasted malt and mouthfeel as the key qualities. The pumpkin is an afterthought, however. (I personally like less pumpkin, but this is not enough for the pumpkin beer lover.) I would probably like this beer more as a straight-up stout without the pumpkin.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on December 23, 2013.

It pours jet black with a decent tan head and good lacing clinging to the glass.

The aroma is both forward and subtle at the same time if that makes sense. I pick up the dark baked malts, dark fruit, yeast, as well as the cinnamon and nutmeg pumpkin spices. Nothing explosive or in your face but overall a fine varied nose.

Medium body.

Those dark malts and pumpkin spices are even more laid back in the taste but they blend together very well and bring out a very roasty-toasty feel.

I love a good stout and merging it together with the pumpkin spices of fall make this exceptionally good.

Pumpkin

The colour is deep brown (90 EBC), the liquid is clear and rather thick. The finger thick head is pale brown and compact, it sinks slowly leaving some lacing on the glass.

The smell is spicy and sweet. Roasted notes of chocolate. Cinnamon, cloves, ginger, orange peels and bitter oranges. Some black malt sour flavours, but not very much bitterness.

The taste is smooth with spicy Christmas notes and Coca-Cola: Cloves, cinnamon, bitter oranges, ginger. Sweet soda-like flavours. Hints of chocolate, cocoa and liquorice. Medium body. The aftertaste is less straggly with cinnamon, pumpkins, bitter oranges, molasses and figs. There is almost no bitterness. The finish is sweet with mild spices.

The carbonation is mild, the many small bubbles are long-lived, they cerate some foam in the mouth. The liquid is smooth.

Lots of spices in this one. I would consider it as a Christmas brew. Good balance and no off-flavours.
