This is a really great beer. I'm not sure if player1 is working as an operative for whatever brewery is in direct competition with Cape Ann, but that is one lousy example of a debut review on this site. And it couldn't be further from the truth. I'm a huge fan of the regular Fisherman's Pumpkin Stout, and this takes that, doesn't make major changes, but enhances and improves everything that needs to be fixed and makes its little brother absolutely obsolete. It also is in direct competition for the best pumpkin beer on the planet.

A: Let's think about the standard Fisherman's Pumpkin Stout and the Imperial as fountain pen inks, shall we? The standard FPS is one of those that is a little watery, that you have to press down against the paper to get a dark color, that doesn't quite leave a major impact on a piece of paper and might run if you get the paper wet. FIPS, however, is one of those deep dark shiny black inks that you can write checks to the President of the United States with without fear of forgery. It's absolutely impossible to see through, has a beautiful light mocha head, and fixes anything that may have been wrong with the look of the standard FPS.

S: The smell is a lovely gourd-y explosion of earth and sweet and autumnal spice, with a bona-fide chocolate character coming right behind.

T: I have to bow down to Cape Ann for putting together a beer that is 10+ percent, but doesn't give into the trappings that most imperials do. This beer feels no pressure to be a huge flavor bomb, but is sort of like FPS with the volume turned up to 11. Everything that makes its little brother such a great experimental pumpkin ale is enhanced here.

M: And there's so little in the way of alcohol burn that...

D: It's dangerously drinkable. So smooth, so sweet, so chocolaty. It's everything a dessert beer 'round this time of year should be.

While I shake my finger disapprovingly at Cape Ann going the way of bombers (I want to buy this in a case without paying out the nose, guys) - I am still blown away by this enhanced version of the existing FPS. If it didn't turn every loyal drinker of FPS into a bona-fide alcoholic, I would recommend that they just replace the original with this, but I doubt that'll be happening any time soon. I've never had an imperial version of a beloved beer that treats the original with such respect and admiration. And at 6-8 dollars a bomber, it stands alongside Pumking as a perfect beer to bring to your family's Thanksgiving dinner for dessert.

Got a skunked bottle! Or whatever the word is to describe a beer gone terribly awry. Appearance was jet black, opaque, dense, and thick with tiny brown lacing; so far so good. Aroma was very funky yeast; hmmm, not what I expected. First few sips were dominated by the funky barnyard yeastiness and not much else--no pumpkin spices, no rich roastiness. Not entirely undrinkable but not very good.

The second pour gave it away immediately. Given the yeastiness, I gave the bottle a slight swirl before pouring. A viscous lumpy sludge came streaming out, erupting in the glass in a quickly settling foam. Reminded me of an oil spill on a beach in Louisiana. At this point it all went down the drain.

This is one we've been waiting for.

Cape Ann Brewing's Fisherman's Imperial Pumpkin Stout (a title only the Europeans can beat in length) is a serious beer. 11% ABV is nothing to shake a stick at.

Black pour...light head.

This beer is a lot more stout than it is pumpkin. It's not a beer spiced up by pumpkin, this is a beer mellowed by pumpkin.

And that's where it works. This is a VERY mellow 11% ABV imperial stout..

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a finger high tan head that died down, leaving a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of dark malts and pumpkin pie spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg are present in the nose.
T: The taste mostly follows the smell and has additional notes of allspice and hints of pumpkins. Only slight bits of sweetness from the pumpkins are perceptible.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The roasted malt and spicy flavors lend dryness.
O: This beer hides its alcohol very well and tastes nothing like being 11% abv. If you can get past the dryness in the mouthfeel, it isn't that difficult to drink. If you let the beer warm up, the pumpkin pie flyovers become stronger and are more balanced with the stout flavors.
