Drank on-tap at Cambridge Common, Cambridge, MA
Served in a mini shaker
The beer poured a slightly hazed, medium amber and was topped by a small, foamy, light tan head. The crown quickly fell to a thin cap. A drippy blanket of lacing coated the top portion of the glass.
The aroma was quite hoppy and fruity. Tropical fruit notes dominated. Mango and papaya were most noticeable. Pineapple and passion fruit came through as well. Some peach and apricot notes. The fruity hops contributed a subtle sweetness. Hints of candied orange peel were also detectible. All in all, really solid. I only wish the nose could have been a bit more punchy.
The flavor profile was quite different from the aroma. It was much sweeter, with a substantial caramel malt presence and more intense citrus notes. Candied coated orange peel dominated. Lots of juicy peach and nectarine notes. Some brown sugar sweetness. Grapefruit pith and orange rind came through on the finish. Just slightly bitter. Overall, quite well balanced. At 9% ABV, the alcohol presence was incredibly well masked.
The mouthfeel was fuller bodied for the style. Rich, slick and creamy on the palate.
Fisherman's Dead Eye Double IPA might not be in the same echelons of some of the better Vermont DIPA's but it was quite impressive nevertheless. I look forward to seeing more beers like this being brewed in my home state.
