Solid hefeweizen, purchased at the LCBO. Really nice to see this here -- it's not the greatest example of the style I've ever had, but it certainly is nice to have it easily available during the summer.

Not a lot to say about this, other than it's a fairly standard, well-executed beer that's been brewed to style. Perhaps a little bit lighter or clearer than a typical hefe. Carbonation is a little on the high side, and clove flavours are very restrained. However, all of these elements are quite subtle, and the overall effect is just a solid, refreshing wheat beer. (570 characters)

Don't mind this hefe at all. Although it is a bit filing. Very nice thick white and long lasting head. Some nice lacing. Smells like a hefe to me, a little spice here and there. Smooth and refreshing. Nice to have 1 or 2 on a hot day at camp or while cooking on the q. (268 characters)

My impression of the appearance is two fold:
For one, the bubbles fascinate me. They violently stirred, in the same exact shape as a tornado, around the center of the glass during the pour. They would continue to rise and stir in uniform lines all throughout the glass. If I lift my pint in hand and move it side to side the bubbles jerk along with it, distorting their path sideways, making their path to the top curvy. How responsive.
More importantly, however, the head (which started in abundance - as it should with the style) would sparkle out in small patches at a time. The appearance bears an unhealthy colour - a tarnished shade; somewhat like the inside of a pear or apple that is beginning to brown after being sliced. Blurry but not clouded. All the suddy lacing that washes up the glass with each sip slowly slides back into the beer.
The aroma is pleasant. Very fresh wheat with fruity notes of banana very ripe. Some small degree of spice (clove foremost) compliments the smell. The banana is very present. The smell is nice.
The body is moderately carbonated for the style. It stays light, and for that reason refreshing, but a little bloating to make this "the one" to drink all afternoon.
The wheat, as it comes through in the taste, is flat and stale. It has a very 'multi grain' flavour - brown bread/whole grain like notes. The aftertaste lends a soft touch of banana taste but doesn't stick around long enough. The taste becomes overly lemony at about the half way point. Lots of lemon flavour.
As much as I hate to resort to saying this, it's true - this is nice, BUT, there are far better examples out there. (1,641 characters)

A - Pours a hazy yellow-orange. Head is enormous and sticky.

S - Lemon/citrus aroma and characteristic yeastiness. Hint of honey as well.

T - Bubblegum and banana are at the forefront. Hops are minimal.

M - Fairly light and a little fizzy w/ a touch of astringency.

D - Not bad. Pretty straightforward hefe. (319 characters)

Pours an effervescent bronze with 4 fingers of fluffy white head. Some lacing & head retention

S: Slight smokeyness, or is this OTT cloves(?) & bubblegum

T: Smokeyness, bubblegum & a little honey sweetness up front. Finishes dry, bubblegummy, slightly fruitty, juicy, & again, smokey

MF: Medium bodied with brisk carbonation

Drinks pretty good, we sure this aint from Bamberg? (389 characters)

This beer pours an orange, yellow color. The beer is murky and has a nice thick head.

Smell of bananas and a good dose of clove and spicy.

Taste has some banana and a little clove, even some cinnamon. There is a little malt, which on the one hand is typically German, meaning sulfuric and a little husky. On the other hand it is quite grainy and wheat-like. This adds to the character of the beer and balances the banana and clove of the yeast. Bitterness is low and almost not present. Despite the low presence of the banana and clove, the beer still appears to be phenolic. Body is quite thin and drinkability is good. (626 characters)

being 1/2 Austrian, this has me stoked.

one thing is for certain, Funkengruven didn't use this for his avatar. This is much paler. Nice white head that receded into a cap/ring that stayed. Nice lacing.

muted banana, very mild bubblegum and some clove spice were aromas I found.

Found it had a bit of hop bit on the front end with the wheat malt that was a bit thin. Definite bubblegum in the middle. Pepper follows and then appears again at the very end.

Mouthfeel was similar to other Hefe's I've tried..a bit of carbonation bite, watery compare to ale...but Oh so easy to drink. (593 characters)

Appearance – Pours a hazy yellow with lots of foamy white head. Just about right for a Hefe.

Smell – I smell some banana, honey, grain, yeast, and citrus hops. Nice regular Hefe smell but slightly on the weak side.

Taste –Starts off with a nice honey dew flavor. I begin to taste the banana and clove I expect from a Hefe and then get a grainy citrus hop flavor to finish. It’s very nice and balanced which makes for pleasant sipping.

Mouthfeel – The carbonation on this one was a little sharp for my taste. Body was about right with a fairly light creamy feel.

Drinkability – Great. I downed this effortlessly and enjoyed every drop.

Come summer and you’re looking for a Hefe Weizen don’t rule this one out. (732 characters)

I had this in Vienna this summer. Poured from a .5l bottle.

A: Light cloudy orange with thick fluffy white head.
S: Not much, a little banana aroma.
T: Banana, spice are there. Very flavorful
MF: Fuzzy carbonation. Almost frothy going down, I like that.
D: Pretty good hef, very drinkable. (296 characters)

The cloudy liquid is pale brown-yellow; the large foam is pale yellow.

The smell is sourish with some sweet and earthy notes.

The taste is fresh, but not excessively sour. There are earthy with notes of apricots. The aftertaste is lightly sour with fruity notes.

The carbonation is relatively mild, milder than the average Weisen.

An average Hefe-weisen… (369 characters)

02/28/06- Purchased at a B.C. Provincial Liquor Store in Vernon, B.C.

Presentation- 500ml bottle with an expiration date on the bottom front label. Poured into a 18oz dimpled mug.

Appearance- Clouded light orange or lemon colored pour. Full fluffy 1 inch white head. Leaves behind a decent amount of lace.

Smell- Traditional wheat nose with a nice amount of pepper. Bananas, cloves and bubble gum. Nice.

Taste- Large amounts of banana and clove are introduced right away. Peppery flavors carress the tongue. Almost has a few witbier qualities as well.

Mouthfeel- A bit highly carbonated. Leaves a lasting flavorful aftertatse.

Drinkability- One of the better hefe's I have had. Not in the catagory with Paulaner or Weihenstephaner, but not really that far away. Very tasty and refreshing. Recommended for sure. (829 characters)

500ml bottle poured in a weizen glass. Date on the front of the bottle says 09.2006.

Straw yellow - pale gold in colour and hazy. Big, foamy, white head is 2 inches at the pour, but quicky recedes to a thin cap. Sheets of lacing down the sides.

Not as much banana in this aroma as other hefes. The ever present yeast is combined with a peppery, spicy scent with undertones of cloves and just a hint of fruit.

Starts off with a light wheat flavour accented with pepper. Towards the middle the spices kick up a notch to an off-dry finish. Aftertaste is bready with a light sweetness and hint of spices.

Light-medium bodied with the characteristic hefe pin prick carbonation. Bready taste in the aftertaste is matched by a bready feel.

This is an interesting take on the style. Personally, I prefer a fruitier, maltier, sweeter hefe to this spicy version. None the less, this is still a pretty good beer and lends an interesting twist to add variety to life. (971 characters)

12 oz bottle pours a cloudy murky yellow, nice thick foamy white head, leaves a sticky lace in my glass, aroma of wheat and bananas. Wheat, lemon and banana-clove yeasty flavors. Light body with a crisp, carbonated mouthfeel, very refreshing and drinkable. (256 characters)

This was one of the drinks of choice in Wien for me. I was firmly impressed by this first offering from the austrians, which had traditionally been a crap beer nation for me.

Brilliant pour, a fantastic burnt yellow borderline orange appearance, barely translucid and a bright white head.

The smell was subtle but inviting, typical weizen smell but mellowed down with a sweeter feel.

The taste is soft but doubtless brilliant. banana with an orangey feel, the yeast hints accross but is rather scarce, perfectly working alongside the rest of the beer.

Very nice. for the austrians, exceptional. (607 characters)

Light oranged color, the right haziness. Visible carbonation, beautiful white and creamy foam.
The smell is light and quite delicate for a weizen. Yeast, wheat, banana.
The taste too is quite delicate, with wheat and yeast, quite strong carbonation.
Then some citric, quite sharp. Maybe a little too much. And then even a hint of lactic. (337 characters)

Poured to an orange-brown with a nice thick creamy head. Smell includes notes of banana bread and cloves, which is very fragrant. Taste is a little bland with slightly bread-like flavor. Mouthfeel isn't bad, has a grainy aftertaste that isn't offensive, it's not overly carbonated. Very drinkable though, goes down like water. For this style this would not be my first choice, but it is certainly not a bad one. (411 characters)

Pours a cloudy gold with a massive head, requiring several pours. Aroma is light and honey-sweet with clearly identifiable cloves. Wow, I could wear this as cologne.

Taste is a sweet and clean wheat malt. Some elements of honey, a light floral touch, not overly complex. Some slight buttery and bready flavors are evident later in the glass. Missing the yeasty or banana flavors others have found.

Mouthfeel is very soft, quaffable. Quite refreshing, not as hefe as other hefes but still very sessionable. Closer to other weissbiers than a full hefe. (556 characters)

Pours a cloudy golden beer with a tall puffy whitehead.

Smell is the expected banana and clove scent with a much stronger clove and medicine scent than banana scent. Malt contribution is clean and sweet and cake like.

Taste is mildly sweet with a lemon edge to it in the beginning. Hops are quite strong here for a German HefeWeizen and give this a substantial herbal bitterness. Flavor is mostly of cloves and medicinal herbs and the banana flavor is almost completely gone.

Mouthfeel is good.

A different take on the German HefeWeizen here far more hops and it is really the major flavor here making it similar to the American version. Still Hefe yeast was used and it does add a great deal to the aroma and some to the scent; so it is a real HefeWeizen. A unique take on the style that I can recommend. (817 characters)

The beer poured into the Tucher weizen glass hazy pale golden with just a slight amber hue. The head was tall, strong and moussy with both large and small bubble consistency and fell very slowly as it laced the glass.

The aroma was wheat and spice through the dense and rocky head. The spice was clove and perhaps hints of coriander. The aroma was fruity banana masked by the massive head. As the head fell and the beer warmed a light caramelized banana fruitiness emerged.

The flavor was strongly fruity with a nice banana flavor coupled with a good clove spice. The flavor of the malt was also present and a light wheat flavor to boot.

The finish was light and crisp with a dryness coupled with the remaining fruit and slight spice impression into the aftertaste. The body was medium with a good mouthfeel due to the wheat and the higher carbonation level. Unsure why this beer isn't getting much love. It is a nice solid hefe, better than many. Give it a whirl...

I've been on a real Weizen kick lately, picking up every one I could get my hands on, this is the latest one.

I am not impressed with the look of this beer. Medium frothy head, cloudy, dark, almost a murky grey colour. Not that appetizing looking. Sour notes in the taste, slight bananas and cloves, a bit bitter, bites the tongue slightly but still manages to feel thin in the mouth and going down. Not as complex or as refreshing as a lot of the ones I've been tasting lately, drinkable though... (501 characters)

Soht hazy look with a nice big white head and spotty lace. This soapy ring after a while.

Pretty gentle onthe nose. Cloves and banana. Typcial weiss, nothing too exotic.

A little thin, slightly sour. Thin almost metallic finish which is a little off putting. Slightly prickly puckerish mouthfeel. Don't like the finish.

Passing good, but there are better weißbiers out there. (385 characters)

This is a starter hefe-weiss. It has all the flavours, odours and appearance, but they're a little watered-down.

Slightly murky, off-white appearance.

A hint of fruity, bubblegum odours.

Light mouthfeel, less carbonated than some.

Drinkability: It's like water! (273 characters)

The sample I tried was from a bottle (5.5% ABV) purchased from the LCBO. It had the typical cloudy appearance of a Hefeweizen, but the taste was a little disappointing. The distinct cloves and banana-like flavours were present, but less so compared to others from the likes of Paulaner or Schneider AG.

Overall, a decent weissebier, but not exceptional by any means. (371 characters)

(500 ml bottle). Typical hefe cloudy golden, large head. Lovely strong aroma of ripe bananas, bubblegum and cloves. Cloves in the flavour too, light bodied, tasty but could still use some more "bite". Like most weissbiers not too much aftertaste. Good, not outstanding. Rerate: This is a beer I come back to all the time, as it is relatively cheap in Norway (available at Vinmonopolet) AND very refreshing. Not a great beer if you are looking for the big flavours, though. (472 characters)

Hazy golden, big fluffy white head, lacing. Aroma is bananas, spices and cloves. Flavour is bananas up front, wheat is present and spices in the finish. Carbonation is medium with a medium mouthfeel, very smooth and tasty beer. One of my favourites from the new LCBO release. (275 characters)
