Brewed in 1998 and the freshness date along with the rest of the painthas rusted off the cap.
The cork moved out a little after removing the cap, so I when to the sink to before taking that out. No worries though, it was under some serious pressure but it wasn't a gusher.
A: A slightly hazy, medium golden beer with a lot of carbonation. There is a long lasting, rocky head of off-white foam leaving a lacing that slides back into the beer.
S: It smells like a pleasant beer got spilled in a very musty basement. A moderately-strong wet newspaper like aroma, if this was a wine I'll call it corked. There is a sharp tart aroma but some lingering Belgian yeast aromas of a some spice mixed with Belgian Pilsner malt.
Follow up report on the aroma is that mustiness does subside a lot after being open for a while but so does all the other aromas with it.
T: The beer isn't a sharp as the nose would suggest but still moderately-strong with a bit of peppery spice. The mustiness is there in the flavor if you breath or burp but if I pinch my nose it's a pleasantly soured beer with some obvious Belgian and Saison lingerie . There is a medium-low, light fruit flavor like nectarines and peaches. This beer is about as dry as the come. The aftertaste is a fruity, citrus zest-like tartness.
M: A medium-light bodied beer with a very strong level of carbonation. A carbonic dryness on the palate.
O: I doubt this is a fair assessment of this beer and may not have been properly stored over the last twelve or so years before making it's way to my local shelf. I might take this review down if I can't find a fresher bottle to give a proper assessment.
I'm not telling you to hunt this one down but if you like sour beers and happen to find one being sold for $0.99 give it a try. It smells like a train wreck for a while but drinks fairly well.

The bottle says 1996. The overriding discriptor of this beer is sour. Smelt sour with some barn yard charactor. Tasted sour. Stripped my tounge with sourness. It was hazy yellow. I dont know if it was supposed to be that sour, but it wasnt very pleasing.

750 ml pours a slightly hazed, golden body with a medium sized, creamy, vanilla hued head. Sheet lacing is left on the goblet.
Aroma is sweet orange, almost akin to orange soda, with notes of pineapple and a persistent odd array of spices. Pepper, cumin, and cardamom, all in evidence.
Medium bodied with a silky carbonation. Alcohol is relatively well hidden.
Taste has sweetish orange and pineapple, floral hop bitterness, and the unusual spicing noted in the aroma. Cardomom, cumin, and pepper add a unique dimension here.
Very eccentric! An enjoyable Belgian, but the spices are just a bit overdone or out of proportion.

33cl bottle poured into a tulip at Delirium Cafe.
Pours a nice golden cloudy color with a big white fluffy head. Lots of sediment but it's not hurting the taste. Nose is fantastic, it's sweet floral and a bit yeasty.
Very tasty, fresh, crisp, smooth and a bit funky. For being a strong beer, it doesn't taste like it. Very sweet which works well with the Belgian yeast, quite tasty!

Earthy sorta' farmhousey stuff, candied sugar sort of start, lightly sweet, with quite a dry, carbonated finish, some late bitterness, but fairly light, and a touch thin. A bit candyish, but not bad, drinkable. Didn't excite me like Saison de Pipaix of the same brewer.

A: the pour crackles with carbonation and glows of hazy yellows and golds. The head is near bleach white with a most fizzy appearance that decayed and crumbles away. Mostly spotty lace, otherwise the glass remains uninhabited. Good summery color though...
S: hhmm, has somewhat of a farmhouse funk, if you will. Dried hay, straw, and mint with spiced lemon based acidic fruit notes with, what I think, smells like a very dry champagne at times. Nothing very complex in the nose, hopefully the palate decides otherwise
T: light, flaky, and sweet breaded flavors throughout. Fruits remind me of tart pears, granny smith apples, a few cloves, coriander, and crushed peppercorns with a twist of lemons. I find that the farmhouse funk, which consist of grasses, straw, and various farm florals, holds a meager place at the back and fits with the light effervescent flavors. This light flavor helps push the spiced characters through and augment the finish...things are in good order. I hate this comparison, it seems justified this once. It reminds me much of a flavored lemon orange soda (without the concentrated flavors) and of course with quite a bit more depth. Not bad
M: the body is a light medium with a fresh tingling bubble count. Mouthfeel is good with easy palate to gather, not creamy by any means, but easy to drink
D: decent drinkability, light, refreshing, and summer time flavors written all over it

Yeasty aroma that carries for several feet. Alcohol in the scent as well. Aggressive carbonation, that we left for a while to ease off. Expiry 2007, bottled in 2003. Lasting head. Lace, satisfying with vanilla, sugar and creamy bannana. Very drinkable in small mouthfulls.

750 ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy gold body with an orange cast topped by a huge, rocky head of off-white foam that wants to rise right out of the goblet at you. The retention is exceptional and it holds a solid 1/2" head throughout the entire glass; leaving exceptional rings and sheets of lace as it goes. The nose is unusual. It's not necessarily appealing, but neither is it off-putting. It expresses some clear phenolics and it's laden with acetaldehyde leaving it reminiscent of mead and dried fruits (particularily apple and some pear), but it's also a bit plastic-like. (My though was initially that it had undergone a high temperature fermentation, but the higher alcohols that would also come of that are not present. Odd.) The body is medium, and it's very fine and gently effervescent carbonation caresses the tongue. Unfortunately, the flavor displays the same acetaldehyde and phenolics present in the aroma. It's sweet, quite honeyish in fact, and very apple-like... yet not particularily pleasant. A bit of astringency is present as well. It's an interesting beer that's rich in flavor but lacking in complexity. It's defects really bring it down, which is surprising because the other Vapeur beers are so well done.

Capped and corked 750ml green bottle poured into a tulip glass. Bottle denotes a 6% ABV as opposed to the 8% listed on this site. Pours a golden orange color with a creamy off-white head. The aroma is rather interesting with some farmhouse qualities. There is some light fruit (apple, lemon), spices and yeast. The taste is rather disappointing after the good presentation and decent aroma. The taste is hampered by the alcohol as it seems to dominate the taste. For a 6% beer, it seemed like it possessed at least twice that. Overall, this is a below average Belgian that was a little disappointing.

Appearance: Opaque, peachy with a significant amount of either cork, globulous brownish chunks of a mix of both. Started off with a big white head that tapered off rather quickly.
Smell: Spicy aroma that I could only describe as wet bread with crubled up pieces of cork in a leather pouch left in a dusty attic. I liked it, honest!
Taste: The quite lively carbonation pushes the spicy sweetness right up front, really reminiscent of ginger ale, but with a slight musty aftertaste that played well with the sugary backbone. This is the kind of Beer where taste can vary wildly from one bottle to the next, this one turned out pretty good.

A: Pours a bright orange color, with a big frothy white head and some light peppery floaties.
S: Sweet oranges, lemon citrus hints and cotton candy are present on the nose.
T: Big lemon-orange flavor starts out the beer and then fades to a nice sweet and sour finish with light citrusy notes.
M: Mouthful is spritzy and live with lots of carbonation and a spicy hop presence. Texture is very smooth and oily on the tongue.
D: Good flavor and drinkability per style. Overall a solid Belgian but doesn't have enough character to make it stand out in a tough field of competitors.

Bottle: Poured a hazy golden color ale with a good size foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of peachy ester with some light spicy notes. Taste is a nice balance mix between some peachy and fruity ester with a nice medium sweet Belgian malt backbone with some very light funky notes at the end. Full body with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol.

750 capped and corked green bottle picked up (to go) Saturday night at the Taj Mahal Indian restaurant in Boise. We had dinner, I had Iced Tea.. but I knew I saw a beer in the cooler that I've never seen in Boise... tonight I give it a go... My Bottle says it is 6%.. not 8%.. also the label has a purple background as opposed the the yellow background in the BA pic.
2 Finger head.. drops above a straw colored brew. Lace droped fast.. but everytime I take sip, a nice collar reveals itself.
Aroma is a Saison ... not BSPA .. Big estery fruitiness ... alot of citrus and wheat malt .. Slightly sour with nice whiffs of white pepper.
Flavor is very fruity .. underripe plum and green apple .. Very yummy .. phenolic but not overly done. Slight cardamom and pepper... slight cumin .. Bready pale malts and could be getting some spicy hops, but I could easily be mistaken because of all the other flavors going on here. A little yeasty fruitiness helps to tie this one together. Lighter medium body with a champagne like characteristic. Long Dry and Spicy finish.
The Taj Mahal had pretty good food but Holy Shit! One of the best "Non-Beer bar" selections in town... I saw people drinking Chimay Blue Magnums.. Meantime IPA.. Stone Smoked Porter and quite a few other world class brews. Service was slow, but given the fact, I only saw three people working ... it was still pretty good. Also, the guy who took our cash told us there is some sort of "happy hour" with half off beer prices... If that is the case, I will delete all these restaurant notes and review the restaurant as a beer destination in coming weeks... awesome.

750ml bottle topped with a strange plastic seal inside the crown cap. Freshness date on cap reads: "F 50 05/2013" 6% ABV and different color scheme on label than the sample picture shown.
A: Cap pries off with a pretty loud pop. Pours a hazy golden amber with a medium soapy head which dissipates very quickly to a thin ring around the glass. Spotty/minimal lacing.
S: Loads of under-ripened strawberry! Slight chalky/limestone aroma. No real hop or malt presence. Just tons of under-ripened strawberry. At first the smell reminded me off Festina Peche from Dogfish Head. Quite a bit of lactic tartness.
T: Under-ripened strawberries yet again. A little lemony tartness. Slight musty quality which makes me think this is more of a saison than a belgian pale. A little bitterness on the finish. Taste reminds me a lot of a lighter version of Fantome Saison.
M: Medium to high carbonation on the palate. Pretty light palate weight. A nice level of acidity and a very dry finish. Very quaffable.
D: Like a little brother of fantome saison. Very drinkable. Very refreshing. I could drink this beer anytime. Considering it's priced the same as any other belgian 750 at about $9-$10 a bottle I'd say it's an exceptional buy. Highly recommended.

Presentation: 750ml bottle, cellared for 9 months in my possession, in a oversized crystal snifter
Uncorked with a nice "SNAP". Poured with a lot of life, smooth. flowing.
Interesting nose. Light, crisp, dry, sweet with honey, mild coriander, wet rocks, fresh sea air. With some time to bloom floral esters come alive as well as some sour, tart qualities (apple & pear) along with some alcohol sting to the nostrils. Head was a solid 2 fingers of thick, sticky, sculpted pearl white foam of mixed bubbles that lasted about 5 minutes, fading slowly to a dollop of the same as an island floater surrounded by a glass ring that laced in splotches. The body is a thick, very clouded golden hue mass of suspension, almost dirty with sediment, practically viscous.
Initially dry, very soft & bashful, downright light in quality, a sweet mix of apple, pear, malts, spicy pepper and fresh, crunchy artisan bread crusts plays against a mild hop bite. Yeasts come alive along with a very noticeable spice (almost hot) peppery quality in a dry crescendo that builds and builds. This is one of the "spiciest" Belgian Pale Ales I've tried. It completely caught me off guard on the 1st sip with an almost sledgehammer dry bite of pepper, hops & spice...a nice feeling! While relatively easy to drink, I'm in no hurry to do so and enjoying the leisurely pace the beer is setting.
The yeasted, spicy quality continues on the throat as it finishes, albeit in a gradually diminishing capacity. It grows a bit syrupy, bitter with hops, then slides away in a nice, mouthwarming & teeth numbing farewell that is nicely clean, surprisingly sweet (well, bittersweet but more sweet than bitter) that is not coating at all, a tingle on the bicuspids as the main last note.
A very interesting, quirky, surprisingly spicy brew. I did enjoy the casual pacing it set, but it was also easy to drink. This would be perfect with lighter meat Thai or similar spicy fare, perhaps even Mexican? It would need a strong, soft, stinky cheese to hold up to it. Its slightly seductive in its reveal, which I enjoyed very much. Another beer to be celebrated for its simplicity, yet quality. I would love to try this with some spicy food. Give it a shot.

I think I may have a different beer. My bottle is only 6% alc/Volume, which is not a Belgian Strong Pale Ale, more of a Belgian Pale Ale, with some sour funkiness. So my ratings are based on a Belg Pale Ale.
Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a Beer Hunter tasting glass.
Golden, hazy, virtually no head, but well carbonated.
Aroma of sour fruit, lemony, citrusy, a little pineapple on the nose.
Taste is like the aromas. Mild sourness, like weak lemonade, no sweetness. Just on the verge of being puckering.
Mouthfeel is a little spritzy from the carbonation, but not real carbonic bite. Low to medium mouthfeel, not filling, and not watery. Could session this beer without feeling gassy or full.
Very good drinkability. Very nice beer. If you like belgian sour beers or are looking to try your first sour, this is a good place to start. Not overpowering, easy drinking beer.

Vintage August 1996. Orange-amber, light reddish hints, complex color, very nice foamy head. Good call Josh, this nose reveals tremendous house character! Full French mustard grains, lenses, expanding essences. The more I smell, the more I develop the certainty that they really did use mustard grains, relishy vinegar notes, mellowed out lemony hops. Tart grapefruit, melon and mango provide a pleasant fruit salad melting pot. WOAH! Sour! Mustardy, rhubarbish, earthy, this one has rusticity by the ton. Rather thin lambicy texture, moderately carbonated, herbal, extremely spicy, cheesy (with moderation), heavily citric, bittering out and a true pleasure to sip. Surprise: A real winner that one! Farmy and thirst-quenching.

Pours hazy orange amber in color with a creamy / cloudy 2 finger off white head that lasted a while; decent lacing that slid down the glass.
Smells funky as hell, like yeast, wet bread and pennies; once you cut through the yeast, there is sweet malt, faint hops, coriander, lemon zest, pepper and other spices. Really odd smell, followed by a really good flavor.
Tastes of yeast, sweet malt, faint hops, grains, wheat bread, coriander, lemon zest, grass or hay, pepper and other spices, and then it has the funky yeast/penny taste which resembles a sour ale. Pretty sweet flavor overall, but still very complex and interesting. Tastes like nature captured in a bottle. The alcohol peeks through, but not in a bad way.
Mouthfeel is creamy, with very little carbonation and a medium body.
It was an interesting beer, but not one that I would seek out again, especially at the price ($27 for a 25 oz bottle at Resto in NYC). It's definitely worth a try if you can find it at a good price.

Golden in hue w/ a light haze. Tremendously effervescent carbonation supports an initially immense mountainous head that settles surpisingly quickly into a moderate layer. Sparse lace is left. Green apple acetaldehyde dominates the aroma, w/ phenol present at a trace. Flavorwise acetaldehyde is intense and masks other potential contributions in flavor. Perhaps a poorly aged bottle (brewed 1996) but this is seriously difficult to drink. Cloyingly tart, dry and over attenuated. I highly doubt this is supposed to taste like this. Highly reminescent of dry, tart apple cider. I suspect a wild yeast infection. A true disappointment.

This beer came gushing out of the bottle. A murky, yellow golden beer with a head that has some big bubbles and that collapses after several minutes. The beer contains a lot of yeast flakes.
Smell is fruity of the Belgian yeast and has some distinct spicy notes of coriander and clove. The beer smells sweet and a bit musty. There could be some other spices in here which make the beer less 'fresh'.
Taste is Belgian, a typical fruity taste that reminds me of pineapple and mango. The spices are a bit too bold and for sure there is coriander in here, but probably also some other spices which does not seem to work out very good. The beer tastes a little musty and medicinal. Bitterness is low, but in combination with this funny spiciness makes the beer a bit sharp. Mouthfeel is sweet and sticky.

A-The cork came out in one piece, which is more than I expected, considering the look of it. Pours clear apple juice color with 1/4 inch of fizzy, eggshell white head.
S-Apple cider tartness, musty old basement, barnyard funk, leather, wet hay. Something a little spicy underneath it all, maybe white pepper/coriander.
T/M-Immediate vinous dryness washes over the palate, overtaking just emerging flavors of green apple, dried fruit and earthy funk. After a few more sips the dryness recedes a bit, exposing more earthy hay and leather character. The finish is dry, and marked with a touch of delicate fruit acidity.
O-A golden ale with strong saison characteristics. I like it a lot. Wasn't expecting anything, due to a few bad bottles from Vapeur in the past.

Saw this bottle sitting by itself at a random beer store I can't remember which one. It looked pretty cool with the crazy cartoons on the label, and its from Belgium, so here goes. Hmm, the cork is soaked all the way through, not sure if that's bad...
A: After the cork broke in the middle, it finally came out with a loud thwop. The Belgian tripel like effervescence came flying out. The head slowly rises up inside the neck before I can pour it, I better pour it before it over flows. The loud sizzle of the carbonation makes a nice background music. The super hazy golden orange color reveals a torrent of bubbles pouring up from the bottom, but pop almost instantly as the half a finger head fizzed to nothing very quickly.
N: Letting it warm up a bit reveals a slightly boozy aroma with some light Belgian malts and sweet sugars. A slightly citrus spicy sour aroma like fermenting lemons, dances out. It has a slightly musty aroma, almost like wet cardboard, which makes me think it was corked, as the cork was also soaked. There are still some wheat and light malts with tangy sour notes, a little boozy, and very Belgian Tripel like.
T: Oh man, its wicked corked!!! The first taste slams me like I'm chewing on the cork, and a bite from wet cardboard the a cat took a piss on, then dragged it through the vomit room at a trashy bar by the sea at low tide. Behind that it does seem to have some subtle hints of Belgian malts, wheat, a little candi sugar, citrus, lemon zest, light spices, and even a little vanilla. Oh GOD!!! It just doesn't go away, after a few minutes of warming up it's ever worse. I don't even think they would use this at Guantanmo Bay to torture prisoners!
M: SHould be pretty rich, and lots of carbonation.
F: I can't even go into that. It's a big drain pour, and I think I have to drink bleach now to burn the taste out of my mouth. Wow, I'm gaggin at the thought of another sip! Blech. I'm going to try to judge the beer pretending that it wasn't corked, which will be hard! But, being corked def is brought into account as they made the choice of corks.
