Pours a dark black with a thumb sized brown head that falls to a ring and laces some.

Aroma is nice roasted malts, sweet oats, good chocolate aromas, and a light smokiness that mingles with somehops lightly piney.

Taste is nice roasted malts, a little to fizzy to start, but it leads to good coffee flavors with the lingeing smokiness and hints of chocolate. Finish is lingering bitterness from the burnt malt mixed with some piney hops.

Mouthfeel is approaching full little too much carbonation at the start but it mellows out nicely in the end.

Drinkability is good smell is nice, flavor is ok but not as nice as the aroma leads you to believe it will be. Thanks go to babydoc and BGC BIF for this sample.

Dark black pour with mahogany cast, moderate, dense head of khaki froth has some stick and leaves scattered blobs of lace.

Aroma is roasty dark malt, dry chocolate, molasses, oaty tartness, and soft floral hops.

Flavor is roasty chocolate and black malts, bittersweet baking cocoa, old coffee filters, and plenty of tart oat flavor. Floral and earthy hops are a bit too subtle to make it balanced. Too much oat flavor.

Body is between medium and big, smooth and silky, with a creamy mouthfeel. Average drinkability, the mouthfeel is this beer's best attribute.

I got a pint of this while at Falling Rock last week; my review is from notes...

A: Served in a pint glass, midnight black (impenetrable), with no head to speak of. A muddy pool waiting to be sipped.

S: I caught notes of coffee and not as much sweetness as I expect in this style. Overall, the bouquet was non-descript.

T: An initial surge of creme brulee made for an interesting start, but I found it to be quickly overwhelmed by a strange celery-like vegetable flavor. The bitterness was strong and not balanced by any type of sweetness or heavy, oat flavor.

M: A sort of what-you-see-is-what-you-get brew, which is to say there's not much that changes about the beer from the first sip to the end of the pint. Slightly fizzy and acidic in feel, medium-bodied.

D: This was too snappy for me...lots of bite and not much balance. I don't think I could have (or would have wanted to) go for a second round.

A disappointing release from Bristol. Not recommended.

12oz single, brennan's-university, bottled in the first week of october

appearance: dark mahongany/almost black, creamy tan head, creamy lacing...pretty nice looking

smell: sweet dark chocolate, cream, roasted coffee, sweet malt backbone, a light touch of fresh hops

taste: better than the aromas...sweet and milky dark chocolate, nice and creamy, roasted barley malt, light oatmeal, some nice fresh citrus hops in the background...pretty nice, nothing spectacular but a good oatmeal stout

mouthfeel: a little thin, pretty silky smooth

drinkability: good session stout

Pours a strong one finger light brown head over a pitch black liquid. Mahogeny-brown edging when held to light and the head has formed a crusty layer that appears to be hanging around for the duration. Smells are mild. Roast and lactose. Black patent. Tastes yeah, oatmeal stout-like. Creamy smooth with a nice smooth oat aftertaste. Early, I catch some 'sour' of black patent. Some coffee steps in late with a caramel accompaniment. Alcohol is present when sought and the black patent becomes more prevalent in a flat and detracting manner, too.

Well, now that I've had about half of the beer, I'm finding the contrast between the black patent and the oatmeal smooth to be interesting. There's just enough other flavors (toffee, alcohol, fuggles hops) to distract my mind from the patent/oatmeal battle on occassion. Not a tremendously complex beer, but certainly an interesting beer. A bit darker-flavored than I'm used to for an oatmeal stout, but enjoyable. Moderate carbonation and md body.

Pours black with a tan head that flattened out to a thin surface covering. Aroma consists of cocoa, dark chocolate and subtle vinous tones. Mouthfeel teeters between medium and full-bodied. Its smoothness almost gives it a watery consistency, though. Non-descript front leads to a choclate malt and dark fruit middle. Strength in flavor comes toward the back in the form of cocoa and roasted grain. Moderate hop bitterness combined with the stout's carbonation leaves a coarse finish at the back of the throat. Burnt malt taste lingers. Hint of alcohol in the back too. At 6.5% that's expected, I guess. Slightly above average, but not outstanding.

I don’t know how far from Colorado Springs this beer will be available, but I hope you get to try it. An excellent offering from Bristol, and only $4.99 a 6-pk. A very nice Oatmeal Stout, with not much foam or lacing. Presentation is opaque, nearly black, with a toasted barley aroma, a hint of fruit, and some carbonation. Lovely flavor, some mild bitterness from the hops, but also a little sweet on the finish. Well balanced, a nice brew for a winter’s eve.

Pitch black with a nice full creamy brown head, good carbonation and leaves sheets of lace. Strong dark chocolate and roasted malt aroma and tastewith fusel alcohol more noticeable in the mouth than on the nose. Medium-full bodied (leans medium) and a bit oily with a strong dry roasty bitter finish.

Very nice winter warmer ! Wish I could get it here !

Very little head comes with this beer. I tried a sample of this at the store and I was impressed, but when I got home and had my own bottle, it sure lost the appeal that I initially saw. There is a huge sweet and nutty taste that explodes when it first hits your mouth, but I don't really like the way it finishes. It was a nice stout, but it is actually a little too rich for me in a stout.

Darker brown, but not quite black. The head is light tan, creamy but not too large. The aroma is smokey chocolate, with some mild fruitiness and a bit of hops reaching through the malt. The flavor is a bit soda like, but I can't say why, interesting, but a bit thin.

Black with purple highlights. Head is absent, only a small, semi-tan edging exists.
Bizzare nose of plums, cola sweetness and liquorice.
Enters the mouth with a charred cola-syrup sweetness that is obnoxious almost instantly. Dark fruits parade next. In any other stout, they might be attractive, but here they only add to the mess. Plums and raisins jut out like sore thumbs, lacking any sort of intergration and ride painfully through the finish. Roasted hues are pushed back, and only make a cameo. Oats are not noticed, or at least relocated to the border of perception. Cascade hop finish is forced and unpleasant.
Very thin to boot. The only heft to be found is in its stickiness.
Similar to cascade-hopped prune juice.
With some (major) tweaking and bolstering, this could make a passable Imperial, though it is very needy on the roasted malt end and hop load.
Its cloyingly sweetness and gooey plum hues discredit it as an "oatmeal" stout.
Smooth it is not.
Avoid this wreck.

Pours to virtually no head. Very nice appearance as it is as dark as the night. Somewhat light, but has the distinctive taste that is so good in oatmeal stouts. Much thinner, flavor-wise when compared to a Samuel Smiths, but hey, who cares. Light, but tasty hops on the finish.

The aroma has a sweet malt and subtle chocolate notes, along with a touch of citrusy Cascade. It lacks chocolate malt character-- something I love in the aroma of American stouts. This beer lacks the "silkiness" that a good oatmeal stout should have, and seems more a standard American microbrewed stout than a true OS. Cascades in flavor and bitterness come through nicely making this a unique oatmeal stout. Tastewise as a whole, this beer is pretty well balanced in terms of roasted barley character, hop bitterness, and body. Think of it as a Shakespeare Stout light.
