Pungent, Juicy, Bitter, Smooth

With yet another IPA in the tallboy format to enter the arena, I’m thankful that Pioneer Beer Company came out swinging. This beer nearly dominates my palate with a mammoth onslaught of hop bitterness and flavor. And this one goes above and beyond the rest—it doesn’t just simply appease my hop addiction with a quick fix. Without a doubt this American IPA stands out. [Jason]

Enjoyed at the local Enrico’s Pizza & Pub in Sturbridge, MA, this IPA is a clear golden amber color with a fair white cover and similar lacing. The aroma offers a light biscuit with fair grapefruit hop. Gentle but a positive idea. The flavor offers a solid but easy drinking citrus hop with a peppery wheat bread complement. It’s simple, tasty, and medium-light bodied with very tiny bubbles but generally provides a prickly, active carbonation. It offers a lively, pleasant feel and could easily be a summer session brew. Hops are not huge but they linger nicely on the palate with leafy grain and citrus and make this a clear IPA brew for any hop lover. My first Pioneer brew and a happy experience, better than I expected.

Growler filled at the brewery.

Pours lightly hazed medium amber, oatmeal head leaves ample froth and lacing.

Some piney hops detected by the sniffer.

Pleasingly bitter, with more resinous hops coating the palate. Nice stuff. Easy to enjoy this better then average IPA from the good folks at Pioneer (Gotta love a brewery that has a nice disc golf course on the property!)

Moderatly flavorful with hops/bitterness in control. Malt element is present but balance was not the main focus for this one.

Pours golden, mostly clear with a slight haze, bubbly carbonation and thin off-white head. The aroma is a very pleasant floral, citrus, and light sweet malt.

Taste is different than the aroma. It's very sharply bitter and piney. I like that you can taste the malts but they just stay nicely in the background. There's a tiny bit of citrus that comes through later as the beer warms a bit. The piney hops really shine here.

Mouth feel is medium bodied drink with a bubbly carbonation that adds a nice crispness to it.

Overall, a nice piney bitter IPA that is also easy to drink.

From the 650 ml. bottle. It is not dated but I think it was quite old. Sampled on July 3, 2015.

Murky and milky amber-yellow pour.

The aroma is weak but I pick up pine, floral, and spice characters.

Medium, soft body.

The taste is past its "best by" date I'm sure. But it had a barley malt character and some lingering hop bitterness at the end. I bet this would have been great 6 months ago.

this is a rating i left for anew beer as this one does not exactly fit the beer i had from abv
Hard word is to be rewarded, Pinoeer Brewerys ipa deserve it in droves. Look no further than your backyard ct for an awesome well-balanced and hop forward ipa with a smooth malt base to match. Pioneer's ipa is as smooth and drinkable as you would want any ipa to be with just the right bitterness with a good dose for floral, piney ahd citrusy hop flavor to match. Sure it's a little cloudy or hazy and that doesnt one bit impact the incredibly pleasant flavor. I can't say enough good things about this beer brewed right in central ct, better than almost any other ct brewed ipa i've tried save firefly hallow cone flakes. it's amazing, it's in a black 16oz can with a yellow sub and a red ribbon logo. I went into this one with low expectations and was more than plesantly surprised, i will be seeking out sixers of this one. Remember! drink fresh, drink local. Piorneer Beer company IPA is the de facto standard for CT ipas. Drink one and have a zen moment, I wish you the best and peace everyone!!

The information about this brew is incorrect, or maybe the recipe changed. The ABV is listed as 6.5% on my can dated 11-15-14. The can is exactly as pictured.

Pretty nice brew here. The taste reminds me a lot of Wipeout IPA from Port Brewing, or a little of Hop Stoopid or Finestkind. Nice that it's local to Connecticut, and less expensive, and fresher, than the above-mentioned West Coast IPAs.

Give it a try, and be prepared for the hops!

Nice creamy head hits almost 1 finger then fades at a med pace with nice sticky lacing, clear golden pilsner color.

Nose fresh cascade or centennial hops, light grassy and hint spicy with a touch of citrus, and even a bit of pine, with just a touch of malt.

Taste starts with a light resinous hop, light citrus. Then grainy cracker malts, maybe Vienna or other biscuity malt and probably 1056 style American ale yeast. Light grassy earthy hops come in in the background, with a light fluffy malt. Fairly bitter that builds with each sip, and a hint of a hop oil taste and very slight astringent hop. Finish is dry and quite bitter, light lingering grassy hop taste with a touch spicy hop and light citrus, and a touch of the biscuit cracker malt lingering as well.

Mouth is med bodied, decent carb, very slightly oily.

Overall pretty nice, good hops and a strong bitterness, the malts add a nice base but a bit too crackery, but tasty and drinkable. A nicely done ipa that doesn't overstep any bounds. Sipping at the pub tavern listening to a live band with pouring summer rain outside is kinda Zen.

Terrible - bottle obviously has a Brett infection. Smells like a horse barn, cloudy and over-carbonated. Disappointing waste of 10 bucks

Pours a clear light honey gold with a finger of foamy head that settles to a solid cap with strata of lacing throughout. Aroma of citrus and pine. Tasty, more pine than citrus, clean finish. Nicely balanced, very enjoyable.
