Pours copper/amber with a slight white head.

Smells extremely hoppy.

Doesn't taste as strong as the menu suggests. It seems like standard IPA with nothing too extreme going on.

Lighter than expected, and not to overpowering.

Not un-drinkable, but nothing to write home about here. This beer was named for the "Swamp Fox" who fought off the British soldiers in the 1700s. Many of you may have seen "The Patriot" starring Mel Gibson. Several movie critics dubbed the film "a weak attempt to re-create Braveheart." If Braveheart is a really good IPA, then "The Patriot" is the Swamp Fox IPA.

(At one point during the movie "The Patriot", Mel Gibson repeatedly swings a hatchet into the body of a British soldier until he is literally covered in blood. I am fairly certain that my waiter at "Moon River" wished he had a hatchet.) (832 characters)

Appearance: Clear, yellow body with a thin, white head.

Smell: Big floral and citrus scent looming over a very thin, very light malt character.

Taste: Rather light pale maltiness that fails miserable to provide any sense of balance to the hops. A flash of flowers and Meyer lemon before the strong bitterness. Long, bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-low carbonation. Very faint stickiness to the mouthfeel.

Drinkability: No thanks. A beer that's altogether lacking in the malt department and relying on hop bitterness in lieu of hop flavor holds little interest for me. (587 characters)

Poured golden orange into a pint glass with less than a finger of white, average retention, and decent lacing. Decent visible carbonation. Smelled of bitter herbal hops, and some malt; not much in the way of citrus or fruit in general. Tasted very bitter with a dry finish, and again, little in the way of any fruit flavor. Highly carbonated, and on the thin side. This is an ipa that has potential, given the strong bitter presence that other failed specimens crave, but definitely needs some beefing up. (505 characters)

Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a soapy slight head which leaves a little lace on the glass. The aroma is faint, there is more of a malt smell with a slight hop bite of citrus at the end. The taste is of citrus hops big and bitter, not alot of balance, but a good citrus hop bite and flavor. The mouthfeel is a little bit undercarbonated. Overall it was an average ipa the taste was good if not unbalanced, the nose lacked something and needs to be more inviting. (470 characters)

On tap, pours a hazy orange with a decent sized head.

Aroma full of citrus and spices. Some malt backbone but the spicey notes own the stage. For me, it was too much.

Cascade hops provide a citrus flavor with a very light sweetness. Finishes with a light bitterness.

Pretty good if you like some of the spicey seasonals out there. Flavor is a bit one-dimensional, but it is an easy drinking IPA. I think a little more hops would really help this beer out. (461 characters)

A. Poured an cloudy amber yellow color. Small pale head with decent lacing.

S. Hops pretty much overpowering other scents of citrus, corriander, and pine.

T. Hops, orange peel, bitter bite aftertaste.

M. Medium bodied beer, good carbonation.

D. Decent IPA slightly too bitter for me. the hoppy aftertaste was long lasting. (326 characters)

Served as part of their 4oz sampler tray.

Copper in color with little head retention. Hops are very present in the nose. American style hops are easily identified. Similar to Bell's Two Hearted. Upon first taste the hops are in your face. Easily the hoppiest brew on the menu. The malt is not there to balance correctly. My favorite on the trip but it's similarly to TH could have something to do with that. (409 characters)

Appearance- slightly hazy amber colored. Fast dissipating head no lacing

Aroma- sweet malt and citrus hop aroma. Need more aroma hops.

Taste- citrusy hops dominate. Very nice. Slight malt backing. Hops are slightly harsh.

Mouthfeel: somewhat astringent. Medium bodied. Fits style.

Drinkability- not the best ipa in the world but suitable for a hot Savannah night! (370 characters)

On tap at teh brewpub, served in a shaker pint, beer is amber with a slight haze, off white / tan head of small bubbles, low retention, some lacing, moderate to low carbonation.

Aroma is sweet, citrus, mild earthiness and pine.

Beer is medium in body, moderate bitterness on the back end, not a dry finish, moderate malt throughout, nice citrus hops in the middle. A slightly above average IPA for the masses, enjoyable. (422 characters)

I had sampled this once before a few weeks back at the WBF and was not overly impressed but decided to try it from the source, poured a light copper color with a thin white head that was gone quite quickly.Very piney aroma pretty one dimensional I also picked up a light caramel sweetness underneath but it was faint, not a big hop profile flavor wise there is a big fruitiness wich was nice but other than that somewhat run of the mill. (435 characters)

This was probably the best of the four beers available at the Moon River outpost in Cartersville. It leans more toward hop bitterness than hop flavor than I prefer in an IPA, but it was still a tasty beer. There was a good bit of a fruitines something like dried apricots, grassy hops and a touch of sweet malt. The flavor had grapefruit-rind bitterness backed up by a pleasant fruitiness and a touch of malt. Pretty tasty. (423 characters)

Not a bad stab at the West Coast IPA style, if it had a cleaner palate it would have been close to dead on. Fruitiness, yeast and ester have a hard time trying to meld with the hop bitterness. Other than that this is a decent brew. (231 characters)

On-tap at Moon River Brewing Company, Savannah, GA

A: The beer is slightly hazy yellow in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half-finger high white head that has good retention properties and consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: There are light to moderately strong aromas of pine resin hops in the nose along with some hints of citrus.
T: The taste has flavors of pine resin hops but not much in the way of underlying malts. There is a moderate amount of bitterness, which lingers through the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The beer is a good representation of the style because it is hoppy but not overly difficult to drink. (771 characters)

Appearance: clear golden yellow in color with a 1" head that lasts a bit. Some light lacing paints the glass.

Smell: bits of floral bitterness is detectable.

Taste: caramel, nice balancing bitterness with some soft grapefruit citrus tones. Basic mild IPA here that is not in your face.

Mouthfeel: lightly crisp throughout. A bit of dryness arrives at the finish. Medium bodied. Short aftertaste as the flavors linger softly in the mouth.

Drinkability: easy to quaff IPA. One of those beers you get in a plastic cup to walk around town with. (544 characters)

From notes, Enjoyed September 3 at Savannah Craft Brew Fest '11.
L: Pours hazy amber with soapy white head, leaves lacing.

S: Hoppy, citrus, piney aroma. Hop smell almost oily and vaguely similar to another type I like. Nice work guys.

T&M: Hop bite and flavour. Decent brew and East Coast attempt. Smooth, maybe more carbon?

O: Local brews, gotta support 'em. These guys are coming out swinging watch out for them comning soon. (431 characters)

On-tap at the brewpub. Above average IPA, with some dry hopping. Grapefruit colour, a solid white head and lacing, with good carbonation and above-average bitterness. C-hop aroma. A good drinker. Active carbonation fortunately does not detract from creamy mouthfeel. (266 characters)

On-tap at the Moon River Brewery in Savannah, GA. Poured into a Pint Glass.

A - Clear glowing gold with a thin, creamy white head. Nice retention, leaves a bit of sticky lacing.
S - Fairly pungent hop aromas of pine resin, grapefruit, and a slight cattiness with some sweet honey malt.
T - Very similar to the nose, orange zest, pine and grapefruit make themselves know with the same sweet malt backbone. Nicely balanced.
M - Slightly creamy with a medium body and moderately prickly carbonation.
D - Nicely drinkable, but none too sessionable at 7% ABV (that's what it was listed as on the menu). Really wish I could try the Rosemary version. (644 characters)

Had on tap ate the brewpub. Poured a hazy yellow with good lacing. Smelled lightly fruity and with spicy hops. The taste is of good mellow hops balanced with some malt. A fruity spicy profile on the hops, maybe with a finish of apple. The mouthfeel is very light, but smooth and with low carbonation. Quite drinkable and refreshing, with enough hops to keep it interesting. (373 characters)

This was the only one of the Moon River beers that had an assertive smell - a good thing for an IPA. It was a nice copper color with a thick, lacy head. The taste had a good layering of fruity and floral hop flavors, with a lingering bitterness in the finish. Carbonation was appropriately vigorous for the style, though I found this one less drinkable than others - something about how the bitterness coated the tongue. All around a good IPA. (443 characters)

A - poured with one finger of white foam on a hazy, dark golden body. The head settles slowly and leaves excellent lace.

S - grapefruit and pine hops with a sweaty now and some beady toffee in the background.

T - grassy, pungent hops up front with a lot of pine, grapefruit and some onion character. Some orange and more sweaty hops in the middle. The beer finishes with a balance between sweet, light malt and moderate bitterness.

M - medium thick body, moderate carbonation, and a slightly sweet finish.

D - very nice aroma, the flavor works well at first, but gets kind of medicinal and cloying in the finish. (616 characters)

This IPA was served in a standard pint glass and was a hazy yellowish orange with a smallish white somewhat rocky head. It smelled of crisp grapefruit with an underlying malty sweetness. The taste was a sweet malty front that was quickly followed by a sharp grapefruit hoppiness that lingered as an aftertaste. This was a good drinkable IPA that is definitely more along the lines of an American style IPA than English. (419 characters)

On tap at Moon River Brewery, poured into a straight-sided pint glass.

A - Golden Amber with a slight haze. Poured a short finger of creamy, yellowish nearly white head that didn't last very long, but left decent lacing.

S - A little short on aroma. There was some nice, sweet malt and citrusy, floral hops, but I would have liked more in an IPA.

T - This beer has a strong flavor profile, not entirely typical, which makes it interesting. The malt comes through, but it's very hoppy, as I want in an IPA. Citrusy, floral, and a little pine. Very nice. It's fun to taste a beer that fits type but still manages to surprise you.

M - Medium body and carbonation, slightly astringent. Feels like an IPA should feel.

D - This is a very pleasurable beer, these guys know what they're doing. When I go to Moon River again, I will drink two beers: this IPA, and something new. (875 characters)

A very slightly hazy, golden-orange India Pale Ale with a smallish, rocky, white head. The smell is herbal and hoppy, with a very slight bit of malt. The taste has a creamy beginning, a malty middle, a citrus bitter finish, with a very mild grapefruit aftertaste. The body was moderately full and rounded in my mouth. Overall, while drinking this I found it sweet, mild and malty, afterwards the bitter grapefruit that lingered reminded me more of its actually style, an IPA.

Moon River's description on the menu: "Short for India Pale Ale, ours leans more towards the styling of brewers on the U.S. west coast. It has a pleasant bitterness and a huge Cascade hop aroma, balanced by malt sweetness."
