I enjoyed this beer on tap at the 2009 Blues and BBQ festival in Savannah, GA on a fairly balmy evening in mid November. The appearance was one of fairly dark golden, served up in a 16 oz, plastic cup. Aroma was one of overwhelming hop. The taste also of hop, US Centennial, US Chinook, and German Brewer's Gold. I have never tasted a beer that had more hop flavor In my life than this one!!! Is there a hopinator, dry hopping, what causes this?? The mouthfeel is very piney and citrusy. After tasting this wonderful product, I would prefer that all other beers be this good! The drinkability is perfect for having just a couple on a chilly evening.

This beer enjoyed with a friend in the Moon River facility a while back. Review taken from notes.

The beer was gold in color with moderate prickle. The nose was definitely hoppy, but was a mildly hoppy experience compared to many IPA's nowadays. The same can be said for the flavor. The hops definitely carried the beer's flavor from start to finish, but there was decent balance of the malt. I couldn't pick out anything in particular aside from the hops however. The bitterness was above average for the style in my opinion, but I do think that the crafters showed some restraint as it seems many IPA's have gone over the top recently.

A. Poured an cloudy amber yellow color. Small pale head with decent lacing.

S. Hops pretty much overpowering other scents of citrus, corriander, and pine.

T. Hops, orange peel, bitter bite aftertaste.

M. Medium bodied beer, good carbonation.

D. Decent IPA slightly too bitter for me. the hoppy aftertaste was long lasting.

Appearance: Clear, yellow body with a thin, white head.

Smell: Big floral and citrus scent looming over a very thin, very light malt character.

Taste: Rather light pale maltiness that fails miserable to provide any sense of balance to the hops. A flash of flowers and Meyer lemon before the strong bitterness. Long, bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-low carbonation. Very faint stickiness to the mouthfeel.

Drinkability: No thanks. A beer that's altogether lacking in the malt department and relying on hop bitterness in lieu of hop flavor holds little interest for me.

Sampled on tap at the Brewgrass festival in Asheville, North Carolina. Consumed on 09/20/2008 and reviewed from notes taken at the time.

The pour was rather decent, with a light amber color taking shape in the glass in front of me. Nice clarity with literally no cloudiness in it what so ever. Nice bit of carbonation coming up from the bottom converged into a smallish white head of maybe an inch in height that settled down to a bald top after a few moments.

The aroma was very nice, some pungent pine like hops coming through immediately, and as it warmed balanced out nicely with a touch of light grain and some choice biscuit like aromas. The flavor was more of the same, starting out nice and light with a rich resin like taste, this one quickly transferred over to a biscuit like middle, with the bready malts taking the front and center on this one. Quick hitting hops bringing up the tail end, dried out the palate enough for me to start the search for my next sip rather quickly. The medium bodied feel was more then adequately carbonated keeping it from feeling too full while still providing a nice refreshing palate cleansing. Easily session able this was thoroughly enjoyed throughout the afternoon,.

Overall another very solid offering from Moon River. I cannot wait for my next trip down to savannah to get a taste of this stuff again. They are really putting out some quality products, at least from what I have tasted.

Pours copper/amber with a slight white head.

Smells extremely hoppy.

Doesn't taste as strong as the menu suggests. It seems like standard IPA with nothing too extreme going on.

Lighter than expected, and not to overpowering.

Not un-drinkable, but nothing to write home about here. This beer was named for the "Swamp Fox" who fought off the British soldiers in the 1700s. Many of you may have seen "The Patriot" starring Mel Gibson. Several movie critics dubbed the film "a weak attempt to re-create Braveheart." If Braveheart is a really good IPA, then "The Patriot" is the Swamp Fox IPA.

(At one point during the movie "The Patriot", Mel Gibson repeatedly swings a hatchet into the body of a British soldier until he is literally covered in blood. I am fairly certain that my waiter at "Moon River" wished he had a hatchet.)

Appearance: clear golden yellow in color with a 1" head that lasts a bit. Some light lacing paints the glass.

Smell: bits of floral bitterness is detectable.

Taste: caramel, nice balancing bitterness with some soft grapefruit citrus tones. Basic mild IPA here that is not in your face.

Mouthfeel: lightly crisp throughout. A bit of dryness arrives at the finish. Medium bodied. Short aftertaste as the flavors linger softly in the mouth.

Drinkability: easy to quaff IPA. One of those beers you get in a plastic cup to walk around town with.

Nice beer with a very big head..surprisingly nice head.
I will say the beer seemed a "touch" light for style. For some reason I was eexpected a little more color.
The beer smelled nice, with bold maltiness mixing and backing up the wonderfull hops.
Tatse was good as well. Nice malty backbone along with medium hoppiness and a nice, bitter finish.
Enjoyable for sure.

Appeared to be a light amber color with a decent head. Hard to tell is the plastic cup. Not my favorite way to experience a new beer, but one does what one can.

Excellent hop aroma. Hits your nose from a good distance even amid all the other aromas within the building.

Nice malty flavor with a crisp hop finish and just the right amount of effervescence. Even in a plastic glass, a good amount of lacing was left.

As a hop head, I'd rate this beer pretty highly and would have it again if I make it back to Savannah.

On-tap at the brewpub. Above average IPA, with some dry hopping. Grapefruit colour, a solid white head and lacing, with good carbonation and above-average bitterness. C-hop aroma. A good drinker. Active carbonation fortunately does not detract from creamy mouthfeel.

Pours a two finger yellowed tan head over a very clear light copper liquid. Looks quite nice with a frothy head. Smells oranges, woody, piney, grapefruit, and mildly pithy. Nice bouquet. Some deep earthy from the hops and a mild alcohol that is clean.

Tastes yummy. Nice prominent hop flavor with moderate hop bitter and a mild malt sweet underneath. Hop flavor is woody oranges with a bit of saaz-like metallic. Hop bitter starts brisk and clean and this drops quickly leaving a gentle flat hop-oily...like an achey muscle. Malt has no distinct flavors (with searching, some bread crust), but some light-fruity esters enter (apricot and peach). Alcohol sting is mild. Aftertaste has a bit or grassy hop character retro-nasal. Light body and mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. I was in the mood for hops and this was really quite nice. I can see this being a fantastic qummer quencher.

Served as part of their 4oz sampler tray.

Copper in color with little head retention. Hops are very present in the nose. American style hops are easily identified. Similar to Bell's Two Hearted. Upon first taste the hops are in your face. Easily the hoppiest brew on the menu. The malt is not there to balance correctly. My favorite on the trip but it's similarly to TH could have something to do with that.

This was the only one of the Moon River beers that had an assertive smell - a good thing for an IPA. It was a nice copper color with a thick, lacy head. The taste had a good layering of fruity and floral hop flavors, with a lingering bitterness in the finish. Carbonation was appropriately vigorous for the style, though I found this one less drinkable than others - something about how the bitterness coated the tongue. All around a good IPA.

Had on tap ate the brewpub. Poured a hazy yellow with good lacing. Smelled lightly fruity and with spicy hops. The taste is of good mellow hops balanced with some malt. A fruity spicy profile on the hops, maybe with a finish of apple. The mouthfeel is very light, but smooth and with low carbonation. Quite drinkable and refreshing, with enough hops to keep it interesting.

From notes compiled at the 2006 Southern Brewer's Festival:

Golden/amber. Few bubble columns, no head.

Knocks you upside the head with pine, medicinal and floral hops. Wow. This is rapidly approaching Ruination territory.

Taste is the same. Hops, herbal and floral. Pine needles all over the place, and substantial, almost oily bitter. Devastating.

Pineneedle finish, clean, dry, hoppy.

Overall a tremendous brew. Huge hops, dangerously drinkable at 7%abv. This was one of the best brews at the festival. Props to Moon River, the two of theirs I tried were both top notch, and Mr. Pinkerton, the owner/brewmaster, came all the way to Chattanooga just to let us try his beer.

Quite an interesting name for a beer in Savannah, GA. Wasn't the Swamp Fox Francis Marion of South Carolina? Anyways this beer was had on tap at the Moon River Brewing Company this past Friday.

This beer poured a nice amber color with a big frothy head that laces nicely. The smell is a big citrusy hop aroma. The taste is very sweet with more citrusy hop aroma. There is a thick, full body and nice carbonation. Overall, a great IPA, this is the beer to get if you are at the Moon River Brewing Company.

A slightly dark copper with a medium head and decent retention. It had a strong and hoppy(obviously) aroma but some citrus and other fruit, mild spice and malt.
The taste was once agian, rather hoppy but it was well-balanced, with a sweetness in there to mild things out. It was slightly bitter btu this was once agian well-balanced. It was exceedingly drinkable and a great interpretation of the style.

Had to have a nice IPA to wash down the burger I got from Moon River.

Appearance: A nice hazy brown color with yellow hues. A bit darker than I thought this would be. The pour was nice so the head stays up above the glass, especially with a quick swirl. Lacing's nice, a bit spotty but sticks around.

Smell: Lots of citrus and grapefruit hops backed by some fruity malt and a bit of pepper-like spiciness. Without any huge risks, but very nicely balanced.

Taste: Everything comes through rather well. The hop attack stays for the long haul, with only a bit of the fruitiness coming in and being swept away by the hops. Hopheads will dig this for sure. I could've used a bit more balance with the malt, but the lingering finish is nice, not too terribly bitter, and complimented my burger very well.

Mouthfeel: A good amount of carbonation and fullness for the right mouthfeel. Nothing overpowers the other.

Drinkability: I'll have another indeed. This is a good IPA, and I'm sure it'll go with just about anything on the menu.

I had sampled this once before a few weeks back at the WBF and was not overly impressed but decided to try it from the source, poured a light copper color with a thin white head that was gone quite quickly.Very piney aroma pretty one dimensional I also picked up a light caramel sweetness underneath but it was faint, not a big hop profile flavor wise there is a big fruitiness wich was nice but other than that somewhat run of the mill.

The recipe must have changed some, as this is now listed on the menu as 7.0% ABV.

Hazy pumpkin topped with a packed beige foam.
Scented of grapefruit rind, spruce, and crushed lilacs, backed with sweetbread malt.
Begins with a dryish breadiness. Almost cracker-like at first, then expanding into sweeter notions of caramel and apple. The hops hit, full of Cascade cues, all citric acid, pine pitch, and florals.
It's neither overly big, nor over bittered. This is well balanced in its medium structure and low carbonation. Geared towards drinkability more than anything.
An all around solid, basic IPA.

Pours hazy orange, decent sized head.

Aroma full of citrus and grapefruit. Some malt backbone but hops own the stage.

Delicious. Plenty of Cascade hops to provide a citrus hop flavor with a very light sweetness. Finishes with a light bitterness.

Pretty good. Flavor is a bit one-dimensional, but it is an easy drinking IPA. I think a little more hops would really help this beer out.

This was probably the best of the four beers available at the Moon River outpost in Cartersville. It leans more toward hop bitterness than hop flavor than I prefer in an IPA, but it was still a tasty beer. There was a good bit of a fruitines something like dried apricots, grassy hops and a touch of sweet malt. The flavor had grapefruit-rind bitterness backed up by a pleasant fruitiness and a touch of malt. Pretty tasty.

I agree this is more of an American IPA flavored with Cascade & Centennial hops. Not sure of the IBUs but this was not an overly hoppy IPA. Good smell and a nice grapefruit flavor from the hops. I enjoyed it but would have liked it more if it used more hops.

This IPA was served in a standard pint glass and was a hazy yellowish orange with a smallish white somewhat rocky head. It smelled of crisp grapefruit with an underlying malty sweetness. The taste was a sweet malty front that was quickly followed by a sharp grapefruit hoppiness that lingered as an aftertaste. This was a good drinkable IPA that is definitely more along the lines of an American style IPA than English.
