Our Nut Brown Ale is a British Inspired Brown Ale. This medium bodied ale is rich and smooth, boasting lots of roasted coffee & chocolate notes. It is balanced and satisfying all months of the year. This brew was one of the flagship Black Oak beers back when Ken opened up the brewery in 1999.

I had this beer for the first time earlier this year and it quickly became a favourite, even though this review is like discovering it all over again. Poured into a freshly rinsed out Chimay goblet;since I already had one going, in the interest of reuse, recycle, etc.

Poured out of the bottle with a topaz hue, a bit of purple in the glass with shades of brown. Flat white head with a sparse, wispy centre but a ringlet that stayed for the duration. Lower carbonation than I would have told you based on my recollections (writing a actual review does wonders for a beer lover). The aroma also disappointed tonight, if you had asked I would have said there was more to it ... faint chocolate latte but not a lot tonight.

Ahhh, a taste and swish in the mouth dispels any doubts I was starting to have. A dry coffee bean taste and a lively mouthfeel with a dark chocolate dryness and hops. This is smooth and sophistocated. A long, lingering finish with a walnut astringency that delights the senses. The overall mouthfeel and finish satisfies and pleases.

A second pour from a second bottle yields a more substantial head this time, one finger high. I can't get enough of this stuff, what a treasure right here in the GTA (greater Toronto area).

This one pours a beautiful dark (but see through) brown, and it is crystal clear. The head is dense and long lasting and it has just the slightest brown added to its head. As I sip it down I'm getting some great lacing.

Nose on this beer is roasty, nutty, with a slightly sweet fruity note that gives of raisin like vibes.

The taste is where this beer really shines...first and foremost a walnut like nuttiness is very evident, this gets followed up by a raisin like fruit note. As the beer finishes the roast shows as well as some subtle chocolate. It also shows a nice hop note on the finish, earthy like.

A very drinkable beer for me, light body, noticeably dry yet fruity (raisin) like finish. The hop and roast both show themselves with a low but obvious bitterness.

Pours dark brown with a medium head.
The malts come through on the smell, but a hint of the hops too.
The taste starts out hazel nutty and chocolates but on the back end things settle back and you notice the hops with a three bears dry finish....just right.
Mouth feel is dry and refreshing.
This beer gets an A in my book, a go to beer for me, especially in the summer.

Bought in cans in Toronto. Second review on beer advocate...

Not my kind of beer but maybe for those who are into a spoiled almond nut taste if there is such a thing, maybe I had a lemon but it seemed a bit foul, the best I can describe it is it seemed that the almost wooden, nutty, deservedly so named nut brown flavor was way too much, it just didn't seem balanced to me.

Pours reddish brown with a generous off white head. Aroma: Caramel sweet, slightly nutty. Flavour - caramel sweetness offset by well balanced sweetness.

It.s okay. Black Oak makes some tasty brews, but this one is mediocre. I've had much better nutty brown ales. Clear dark amber, decent off white head. medium carbonation decent retention and lacing. Nice aroma of roasted chestnut. Kinda of a bland, sweet nutty flavor. Finishes mildly bitter. Not a repeater for me

A:
Pours a clear mahogany with hints of ruddiness in the light, a couple fingers of airy tan head that lowers to a film. Okay retention; specks of lace. (3.75)

S:
Nutty malts, brown sugar, toast. (4)

T:
Follows the nose with some light dark fruit sweetness, hard water, and a light hop herbal bite at the finish. (4)

M:
Pretty thin body with active carbonation, and a soft malt finish that lingers a tiny bit, very drinkable. (3.75)

O:
This is a tasty, old school brown ale that was drinkable and enjoyable.
It pours pretty nice and seems like a solid, to-style type of beer. Nothing flashy, everything is there. Easy to drink and doesn't really encourage thinking about it. A nice beer that I could definitely drink two or three of. (3.75)
