This beer is said to be brewed exclusively for Britain's Co-op supermarket chain. Coming in a clear 500ml bottle, the beer bears a BBE date of 21/01/06.

Appearance: pours very dark-mahogany colour and a pale-brownish beerhead, with a thin but dense and lasting beerhead.
Smell: sweetish, fruity malty nose--with brown sugar, longan-fruit, dates, and light caramel...
Taste & Aftertaste: the palate is dominated by very fruity, raisiny taste of malts and some faint taste of wheats, followed with mildly bitter taste on the tongue which lingers with light touch of fruity hops; a pleasant bitter-sweet finish in the end.
Mouthfeel & Drinkability: medium-bodied brown ale with simultaneously smooth and refreshing mouthfeel--a quite balanced beer it is, although it had to have a richer body if it was to win my heart. An extremely quaffable and tasty session beer though.

Poured as Newcastle brown ale is mean't to be into a half pint pot with a purposely big head and topped up constantly.

Rich dark brown body with thick tan head with lacing.

Real brewers mash aroma with brown sugar hints.

Sugar smacks start then taken to a solid hops body and tapered into a bitter tang all with the distinctive Thwaites ring.

good carbonation and an ideal mouthfeel makes a rock 'n' roll brew with a sweet tang and hard rock session beer to headbang to.

500ml bottle bought from The Co-op, Ballymena...

Poured a deep dark, quite murky, browny red colour... Creamy brown head with slight orange tinge poured quite thick then faded to light layer... some light sticky lacing...

Aroma - Rich toffee maltiness, biscuity, dark fruits (raisins, figs, prunes), malt / fruit loaf notes, brown sugar sweetness, peppery, some nutmeg, light chocolate hints, some light hops...

Taste – Spicy dark bitter fruits (figs, raisins), toffee / caramel malty sweetness, brown sugar, nutty hints, some chocolate notes, peppery, light hops - nicely balanced with the malt sweetness, light rum notes, some faint cinnamon traces...

Feel - Quite smooth... Medium bodied. Pretty quaffable...

Overall - A very good brown ale... Very drinkable and definitely worth a try...

This is the same beer and brewery but in a different bottle as a joint venture with the co-operative.

Poured a very dark brown with a red tint to it, and a thin foamyl light coloured head.

Smells of malts and coffee, slightly spicy as well.

Tastes fruity, malty, prunes, treacle and rasins pretty good really.

Mouth feel is pretty thin but smooth almost no carbonation.

Overall I liked this beer, it wasn't perfect but I wasn't expecting much considering it's brewed as a joint venture with the co-op which is a small uk supermarket. The taste of this beer is definitely it's strong point which is always good. I would have liked this to be a bit thicker though.

500 mL poured into a glass.

Nice dark brown, almost black in color. Visibly resembling a porter or stout without the thickness.

Nice aromas as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed the taste of this ale. It has a nice, rich mix of bitterness with just the right amount of fruity sweetness. A little citrus mixed with some brown sugar.

I liked this a lot and would try it again.
