A superb thirst quenching, refreshing beer packed full of flavour, lightly hopped with subtle sweet notes and a delicate citrus aroma. Inspired by the author Alfred Wainwright, famous for his Lakeland Fell guidebooks. For every summit Wainwright conquered through his passion and commitment, each one delivered the ultimate reward. Refreshingly Rewarding for those who think they’ve earned it.

Cask at The Coach House Inn, Chester.
Gold. Creamy dense lasting white head. Beautiful Aroma fruity and flowery but light. Feel surprisingly oily, creamy. Taste light lemony fruity quality almost like lemon curd. Sweetish with balancing zesty bitterness.

Pint in The George, St. Helen's (£3):
Golden & translucent with a nice, straight white head that's creamy & holds well just under 1cm tall. It's very light smelling, some biscuit, English hops & light, pale malts; inoffensive but there's not a lot to it. The taste is only marginally stronger, some biscuit again with pale, earthy malts & a subtle floral finish but it's very one-dimensional. It's light-medium bodied with a clean, smooth feel & moderate carbonation then a light bitterness at the end; basic.

500ml bottle.
L: Clear, dark gold colour with no carbonation, a thin head and sheets of lacing.
S: Nothing.
T: Sweet honeysuckle (too sweet).
F: Light body with just a hint of sticky mouthfeel.
O: Not sure if my tastebuds have changed or Carlsberg/Marstons have messed with the recipe, but this is no longer the solid, refreshing English golden ale that I remember. Too sweet and sickly for me now and the mouthfeel is insipid. Beyond boring, even on this summer evening. Didn’t finish.

Original 2016 review -
L: Perfectly clear, golden colour. No sign of carbonation at all despite the rich and persistent cap. Rings of lacing. Looks right ready for drinking.
S: Nose is subtle. Faint trace of summer hay. Nothing unpleasant.
T: Sweet malt, floral hops. Designed for easy drinking.
F: A little buttery, a little sweet, a little bitter, and foaming carbonation.
O: A light, refreshing golden ale. Would love to try this on tap. A pleasant summertime beer.

Shared 500 ml bottle, as Thwaites Wainwright Golden Ale, bought in London. ABV is 4.1%. Clear golden colour, moderate white head. Sourish and dusty aroma, hints of old jam. The flavour is better, fairly decent hops throughout. Medium dry, light bodied.

De color dorado, con un dedo de espuma de escasa retención. Cuerpo ligero y carbonatación media. Aroma escaso a cereal. Cerveza ligeramente dulce y poco mas a destacar.

Pale gold with loose white head; grainsack, honey, pear, soap + wood spice on the nose; crackery grain, some orchard fruit, vague grass; slight bitterness, round and soft.

Starts out well enough, with a layered nose, and drinks well up front. But this just dies on the finish: no kinda hops, even for the lagery end of golden ale, and flabby body isn’t helping.
I wish I’d tasted this before Marstons took it over, but even Thwaites was always hit and miss.
I suspect this is just a subpar BGA, especially up against the modern wave of mini-session IPAs taking over the style.

Pours pale golden and clear, lots of bubbles on the side of the glass, small head that disappeared quickly. Pleasant smell, taste is light and unsubstantial, fresh. Feels quite thin. Overall not too bad.
