Jack London's was our stop in Carmel for lunch before braving Sig Sur in our little rented drop-top. All I really wanted was food and a beer, and that's what this place gave us. Hidden a bit off a courtyard, there were a bunch of locals and relatively friendly staff. Generic bar/pub atmosphere. The food wasn't anything to write home about, but it hit the spot, and we were waited on fairly promptly. The beer selection was a bit sparse really, I would have liked at least one adventurous choice in the lot, but just ended up with a SNPA. All in all though, you may not find much better in Carmel, as it's so overpriced and touristy.

Jack London’s Bar and Grill is probably the best place that I found to have a pint in the four days spent wandering around Monterey and Carmel. The town of Carmel is quite charming. Quaint homes, shops and galleries line the quiet streets. Many of the structures are styled after the cottages of Great Britain, utilizing cobblestones and thatch. Jack London’s is located down an alley that’s decorated with benches and flowers. Enter through the main entrance or directly into the bar. There’s seating in the bar area, where we made ourselves comfortable, or take a seat in the dining room. We sat at a table in the bar area and then moved to the bar when space opened up. The bar is relatively small with maybe a dozen seats. We visited in late afternoon and there seemed to be a fair amount of locals enjoying boisterous conversation. I then engaged the barman in some good old-fashioned baseball talk (the Mets and Giants were on the tele) and being NYers, that led to some good-natured teasing. He had just returned with from a trip to Cooperstown. We ordered some food, I had fish and chips, the wife salad, both of which were good. The beer selection was OK, with the ubiquitous SN Pale, a local brew from Carmel (wheat I think), NC Scrimshaw (had one of these but it tasted off so I stuck with SNPA) and a few other decent imports. Overall, a nice little joint to stop in for a brew and some nosh. I would definitely come back here again.

When strolling the streets of beautiful Carmel city spending your hard earned dollars in the clothing stores, tourist shops, antique shops and art galleries a person might want to take time out to have a pint or two and contemplate the expenditures one can add to the credit card in a very expensive town such as this.

Jack London's Bar & Grill is a perfect place to have lunch or a quick pint or two. First glance gives one the feel of a warm inviting tavern. The main entrance leaves a person with a decision. To the right is the restaurant. A quaint and down home atmosphere. A medium sized room with a few booths and some tables and chairs. To the left is the bar. A small bar with some stools. A small room decorated similar to the restaurant with a few tables and chairs as well. I found the bar area to be a little bit dark but this is an observation and not a complaint. They have a t.v. above the bar for sports.

The service was quick and good. The waitress was busy that day as the place was crowded but she managed to attend to everyone quite well. The bartender would come out from behind the bar if too many people sitting wanted too many things at once.

The beer selection is good but not great. I have not been to too many bars in Carmel and for craft beers this may be the best spot. About sixteen taps. They include mostly standard beers. Guinness, Harp, Newcastle, Sierra Nevada, Gorden Birsh Marzan, Carmel Wheat, and a couple of others. A nice treat was the North Coast Scrimshaw Pilsner. There is one rotating tap which had MacTarnahan's MacFrost on it when I was there. This tap will have something different when that is gone. The bottle selection is pretty standard. Dos XX, Heineken, and a few others.

JL's has a full bar and of course plenty of wines to choose from.

A good spot for a quick one. I did not try the food but the restaurant area was pretty full so I am guessing that is a good sign. The customers were a good mix of tourists and locals. This place may not have a huge selection of beer but it does have a good friendly vibe to it and is a good place to sit and relax.
