On-tap into pint glass
A- Dark amber hue with persistent head that leaves stellar lacing.
S- Sticky-sweet caramel candy and buttery biscuit malt with an inkling of coniferous hops. Absolutely aromatic.
T- Sweet caramel kisses the tip of the tongue and then roasted malt flavors of dark chocolate mocha fill the palate. Tingling, resinous hops tickle the tongue and a bit of apple taste is present as it goes down.
M- The light carbonation, sharp hops, and robust body feel pleasant in the mouth but this ale leaves a coating of thick honey from the roof of the mouth down the throat.
O- A very complete winter warmer. Easy to drink and, more importantly, enjoyable to drink. I have not smelled individually wrapped chewy caramels in any beer to this extent, typically it's just a caramelized sweet malt aroma. Normally I value taste way over smell, but the succulent scent makes this brew.

The flavor is so interesting and to me, so nostalgic. It's what I used to call "musty" but an intriguing good flavor that here is mixed with toffee. Hops are Chinook and Cascade, but used with restraint. Malty with just the right amount of sweetness. Flavorful and rich but not at all sticky.
Pours a dark red shading to brown, clear and capped with plenty of white foam in the New Belgium snifter. Both warm and hop kissed, this is a highly drinkable brew and one of the better winter ales. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at the Community Co-op in Bellingham.

Appearance is a slightly hazy dark copper with a generous, creamy, very persistent, beige head that leaves a near solid sheet of lace. Aroma is malty with some hop spiciness. Taste is very similar with some nice spicy hops up front, then a malty sweetness, followed by a mild bitter finish.

Bomber poured into a Ballast Point pint glass (hey, sue me). Dark, almost coffee in color but very attractive dark amber. Thick beautiful rusty-looking head, which doesn't stick around too long.
Scent is surprisingly hoppy and floral. I expected more toffee or malt. Smell is almost citrus grapefruit. Very interesting.
But the taste is heavier, and immediately bitter followed quickly by those dense malts and caramel I expected. The sweetness of the hops comes in, and it's cherry or burnt char. Has the mouthful of stout, sticky and oil coming in. Good mix. Since the sweetness is more citrus than chocolate, I don't think I taste caramel but the feel is caramel.
Finish is thick and malty, and damn those hops are still there. The underlying but constant bitterness in this winter ale is throwing me a little. Listed at 48 IBU and that seems a little low. I swear, this is verging on Arrogant Bastard territory with the forward taste. Alcohol warming is there but not overpowering (6.8%).
This beer is unpasteurized and unfiltered, so at the bottom of the glass was sediment, which I kinda dug.
This is a solid warmer, a Winter ale that really all about malt and hops.

22oz into a tulip. Pours a clear mahogany w/ a fluffy eggshell head, patchy lace.
Aroma is malty and sweet, floral, fruity, hoppy.
Taste follows nose. Light brown sugar, caramel, toffee, floral hops. Clean bitter finish.
Mouthfeel is smooth and medium-bodied. Just right.
Overall a very nice winter warmer, perfect for a chilly December night.

Poured from a standard pressure-cap bomber into a conic pint glass in high elevation Libby, Mont. Reviewed live. No best-by date.
A- Three and a half finger head. Long retention. Lasts five minutes or more and leaves fluffy lacing up and down the glass. Cedar-colored body with high clarity. Carbonation appears limited.
S- Fruity. Some bitter notes, dark fruits. Quite hoppy character. Like a light quad...if that's an apt comparison.
T- Much more bitter here than in the aroma. Caramel malts, dark fruits, creaminess. Nice flavor.
M- Creamy feel with a dry finish.
O- Decent beer, looks very nice, smell is complex but both it and the taste are somewhat lacking. Nice feel.
