Served on-tap in a clear Shaker pint at Vermont Pub and Brewery (Burlington, VT).
A: Very dark brown to black with a short cap of light beige, foamy head with decent retention but little to no lacing. (3.75)
S: Big chocolate and coffee aromas combine wonderfully with roasted and dark malt notes. A little but of earthy hoppiness, but malt is behind the wheel on this one. A little bit of caramel enhances the sweetness of the nose. (4.25)
T: Delicious flavor following from the aromas with chocolate bready flavors leading off followed by light cappuccino coffee and finished with a light but clear roasted note. NO real hoppiness detected, and the alcohol is down. A little bit of breadiness is the only yeast character, but this is probably as much malt-derived as anything else. (4.25)
M: This beer has an ale-like feel to it, so it misses the mark -- it doesn't carry the crispness and lightness you expect from a schwarzbier. It drinks more like a Baltic porter or lighter porter. The serving carbonation was a little light, and maybe that would help the feel some. (3.0)
O: I enjoyed this beer as the flavor and aroma are both exceptional, but the feel is not right for the style, too much heft and body and no real crispness to the finish. Still a delicious beer all the same.
