Hands down one of the best beers I've ever had. They intentionally over do it on the smoke and it's an amazing statement on excess and creativity. From start to finish this beer lingers in your mouth and overwhelms it with it's strong flavor. The Vermont Pub and Brewery knows their stuff and this may just be the best beer in Vermont.

Had a chance to finally review this earlier.

Pours a pitch black color with a thick brown head. Aroma is smooth and creamy with chocolate and coffee aromas in the nose. Taste is smooth and smoky. Very roasty with a coffee finish. Very drinkable and perfect for a cold day.

On tap at the pub on 4/21/07 (reviewed from notes).

Silky tar in color beneath a creamy off-white head of foam. Condensed lacing with decent strength down the pint glass. Notes of roasted malts with a layer of peat; oak/wood in aroma. Roasted malt flavors with hints of dark chocolate. The peat flavored smokiness adds another dimension of flavor to the dryness of the stout, without completely taking it over. The mouthfeel is light, and even smooth. A pretty nice Dry Stout with a touch of uniqueness.

wow. definitly a smoed beer. not overpowering, but definitly on the edge. pours an oil colored black with a cramel head. aromas of coffee and roastedness abound. slight apple and hickory notes in the smoke. very nice lacing. coffee toffee roasted explosion taste. really really enjoyable. definitly the best beer here. really enjoy this. perfect on cask. definitly worth the trip.

Served on cask as a blackish brew with very little head or lace. Full of all that stoutness with a big chunk of smoke in there as expected. Not really of the same smoke flavoring school as the porter though I think they use the same smoked malts. In the stout, the smoke interacts with the darkness creating a cloud of flavor. Sadly, I think it may go over the top. Certainly worth checking out.

Pours very near to black in color. The head is the star on this beer- it's light brown, comprised of very very small bubbles, is thick and cloud-like, produces lacing, stays around for a long time, and drinks like chocolate milk. One of the most impressive heads I've encountered, coming from a place that I always felt had too little carbonation and consquently not enough head in most of their beers.

On a side note, I had this 3 times in a weekend (twice on regular draft, and once cask conditioned) and didn't notice any difference in taste or appearance.

Taste is quite good as well with the expected flavors of coffee, chocolate, and a rich smokiness. This is much much better than the regular Handsome Mick's Irish Stout that I remember having. This beer and Lupe are two new incredible beers from VPB. I'd rank this #2 on my favorites list from them with only Black Sea Imperial Stout (Aged 2 years) coming out ahead.
