Notes/Commercial Description:
Mord & Totschlag ("Murder and Manslaughter") was a legendary schwarz, or black beer, brewed for the knights of Kyritz an der Knatter as early the 17th century. Famous at such far-away places as Hamburg and Lubeck in those turbulent times, this rich, robust German dark specialty beer is now offered to the (presumably) more peace loving connoisseur.

Mord und Totschlag - Blood and Thunder

I haven't seen this guy around before. A black liquid fills the mug and chestnut brown highlights surround the interior of the glass. The beige head is instantly creamy and billowing, reaching over two fingers in height. As it settles it becomes frothy and leaves chunks of lace down the mug. The head doesn't fall much short of a finger in height throughout. Looking good!

The nose on this schwarz is rich and robust, more intense than most out there. Roast is soft throughout with a pleasing nuttiness along the way. Mild dark berry notes and cream add a touch of sweetness. The hop profile is a touch grassy but leaning more toward herbal. Good complexity in this one.

Roast again leads the way but is soft and inviting. There's a noticeable husked graininess in the middle along with mild grassy bitterness. The backend brings notes of lightly sweet dark berries and a drizzle of cream. The hop profile sways toward herbal on the swallow but carries some of that grassiness along for the ride.

My only complaint, and it's minor, is that the body is a touch heavier than its insanely poundable brethren but that's to be expected at 7.2%. With that alcohol in mind this guy is surprisingly drinkable, dangerously in fact. The carbonation adds silky creaminess. A mild bitterness lingers long on the tongue.

Mord und Totschlag is an excellent schwarzbier, one of the better I've had recently. It's richer and fuller more so than lighter and highly drinkable. More Duck Rabbit Schwarz than Kostritzer. I would like to see this one around my neck of the woods being as I'd like to drink it more often.

Purchased at Ryan and Casey's in Greenfield MA;came in a big fat bottle. Served this to my family on the deck overlooking the Atlantic at LBI this past weekend. It was a clear hit; malty and rich , well balanced, and deliciously clean. I'd get it again in a heartbeat.

Poured into a large tapered mug, with two fingers of light tan foam initially. Spotty flecks of foam in the glass and a thin ring after a few minutes. Body is black, as to be expected, brownish as it's poured.

Lightly sweet molasses, mild roast, some graininess when swirled.

Taste is good, a little sweet for my taste but nowhere near the cloying Badebier from this brewery. Mild nutty roast, lingering aftertaste. Fairly full bodied with a little hint of coffee and dark chocolate. Consistency of a Porter or similar. Moderate carbonation. Overall it's a good schwarz, a bit pricey at $5, but worth a try.

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color—traces of dark reddish brown are visible near the edge of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down, leaving a large patch of bubbles in the center, a collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of dark and smoky malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell but is a little more complex and has additional notes of licorice and hints of chocolate.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer seems to be a fuller in body compared to other schwartzbiers and seems to be a hybrid between this and a Baltic Porter.

Great label, and name translation: "Murder and Manslaughter". Nice.

The pour from the 500ml into a trusty glass boot is dark brown with reddish highlights and a nice beige head. Lots of straight up German lager/bock-type flavors, despite it's highish ABV for the style there's no mistaking this for a stout which I appreciate in a schwarzbier. Good amount of husky cereal graininess, but ultimately leans towards the sweeter side with cola, caramel, brown sugar, and light chocolate tones. Bits of smoke and dark fruit. Smooth kinda light mouthfeel, wouldn't guess this was 7.2%.

The beer pours a very dark cola brown. It looks black sitting next to me in its dimpled mug, but there's brown at the edges, and you can see some color throughout with the help of direct light. The head rises with a rocky puff of light khaki bubbles but falls away pretty quickly, leaving behind a decent coating of lace. Mild milk chocolate sweetness in the aroma. A little bit of treacle, molasses, brown sugar. Maybe a little bit of smoke and roast. Cocoa. Light vegetal note. Taste has more of that milk chocolate flavor. Fairly sweet. Tastes like chocolate shot through with sugar crystals. Mild smoke, roast and vegetal hops in the finish. Mild coffee. A little of bit of nutty malt. A little muddy. Mouthfeel has some effervescence but it's pretty smooth. Fairly light for a sweet 7.2% abv beer, but there's some body to it. Interesting beer. It's essentially a strong schwarzbier. Gets a bit sweet and chocolatey without enough depth to it. Still, it's enjoyable enough, and the name and label art are fantastic.
