Bottled 10/16/15. 7.75% ABV per the label.
Pours a hazy copper with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Thin rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, roasted nut, burnt caramel, earth, and dirt aromas. Taste is much the same with burnt toast, roasted nut, earth, and caramel flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with solid aromas, but the flavors on this one come together slightly better to me.
Serving type: bottle.

Pours a clear copper body with a small tan head with good retention. Big malty aromas with a light brown sugar and molasses-like character are balanced with a fresh leafiness. Taste is sweet and toffee-ish up front before a grapefruit peel and salad green bitterness balances the finish. Full bodied, a very big beer.

This does not drink as a strong ale. The color when pouring into a glass was a medium light brown with a very light tan head with a medium amount of lace on the side of the glass. The smell was of a sweet fruit, caramel and roasted malts. The taste was very well balance of fruit, (almonds and figs), with a nice hint of caramel along with the fine flavor of roasted malts. The alcohol was evident, but, not so it compromised the flavor and smoothness. Great taste while drinking and a great aftertaste on the palate and tongue. Just the right amount of sweet and bitterness to make this strong ale one of my top choices!

A - Served a clear copper-red color with a thin layer of white head. The head fades down slowly leaving behind some good lacing.
S - Aroma is a mix of rich tasted caramel malts with some light dark fruit sweetness and a hint of booze.
T - Starts off with sweet rich caramel malts with a touch of spice. Through the middle some more malt flavor comes through with a bit of hop and some light booze. The finish is a mix of rich malts with some light spice and a touch of booze.
M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a mellowing warming and a sweet finish.
D - Very drinkable. Pretty good balance of flavors but just maybe a touch thin bodied.

I drink this beer whenever it's on tap at the E.J. Phair in Pittsburg, Ca. Always a good choice when you want something strong and tasty. It's appearance isn't as intimidating as it's name and it's enjoyable it with various meals, even salad.
Their newer version called "Vendetta" is even stronger with a similar, smooth and familiar taste. But if they have Shorty's, give it a try!
