Appearance – This dark orange Belgian ale was cloudy and sported a big, retentive head.

Smell – The big Belgian yeast came up nicely to the nose. I could pick up some light banana and clove as well, similar to a Hefe Weizen. The light delicate hops balanced things out nicely.

Taste – I really like the yeast flavor here. It offers a depth of flavor to this BPA not found in most American efforts at the style. The light, traditional spicing and subtle weizeny notes make this one quite interesting and complex.

Mouthfeel – This light to medium-bodied ale is perfectly carbonated and is very creamy and smooth in the mouth.

Drinkability – This is the beer that all the locals were ordering by the pitcher. It’s a terrific Belgian session ale that I just couldn’t get enough of.

Perdition’s appearance is stunning. Body is a browned cranberry with rich reddish hues. Deep and inviting. Lace is ample and lasting. Butter colored head. Mildly hazy. Aroma is not particularly exciting, fitting for a biere de garde. There is a light and rather generic fruitiness with hints of pepper. Flavor is kind of a biscuity English Brown meets Belgian fruity yeast with a little spice sort of concoction. Again, not terribly dramatic. Light berry and apple flavors, barely discernable from just a generic fruity yeast flavor along with a touch of biscuit and hint of spice is all I get out of it. Very much a biere de garde, a style I just don’t care for. Drinkable…yes. IS the body nice? Certainly – light to medium, smooth, balanced, and with great carbonation. Still this is not for me. I would pass it up for the many more interesting RRs in the future.

Batch 003. Pours into my glass a hazy brown hue with notes of orange and red intermixed. A half inch of light eggshell bubbles creates the head. Steady active carbonation. Aromas of caramel, roast and some bread come through first. Fruity and spicy with a nice Belgian yeast underpinning. Mild toffee. Rather smooth and refined.

First sip brings a toasty, caramel tinged malt upfront that flows into a wealth of fruity spiciness. It flows down with a touch of toffee and mild hops as well. Finishes with tones of Belgian yeast. A solidly refined, earthy, spicy Biere De Sonoma.

Mouthfeel is on the lighter, more refreshing side with lots of fast moving carbonation that rushes across the palate with each sip. A pretty refreshing brew, the only complaint I have is the carbonation gets to be a bit much for me. Overall, another solid, tasty brew from Russian River. I hope to be able to sample this again someday!

The Beers of California

On-tap at Father's Office in Culver City

A: Amber with golden highlights topped with a finger of off white foam sporting solid retention and fine lace on the glass.

S: Grainy with some funk and acid along with earth, apple, pear and pineapple. There is also some caramel and breadiness in the back.

T: There again is grain and some yeast and ester qualities of green apple, banana, pear and pineapple. The bready and caramel sweetness is there and the finish is warm with a hint of clove. There are also subtleties of funk, balsamic acid, and leather which adds complexity and interest to the palate. The alcohol is faint adding a dry warmth to the finish.

M: Crisp and substantial feel with nice linger and carbonation. The beer sticks to the glass and leaves a phenomenal amount of lace.

O: Belgiany, bright and crisp with subtle layers which add complexity. A very refreshing brew and another well crafted and interesting -tion edition ale from RR.

Clear amber red color with good retention. Clove, spice, cardamom, chamomille, and other spices. Taste is bready and has much of the same things noticed in the nose. Higher than medium carbonation with light body; dry finish. Very good beer, I could drink tons of this.

Hazy orange and brown appearance, chunky, mild head. Aroma was bready, lacking hops or sourness (not really this style's MO though) had kind of a bad fruitcake type of vibe to the aroma.

Carbonation seemed lacking. Lots of flavor characteristics, like a big spice rack was dumped into the batch. Every kind of fruit and spice. Or maybe it is simply a function of the yeast that is used, or a combination of all of this. If something can be too complex, I guess this would be it. Not bad, but not a beer style I can say I am a fan of in any context, so take this review for what it is worth.

For a brewery well known for its hops and sours, this one seems like a malgamation of everything else besides those two things they are famous for.

This beer pours a mohogany color with a small white head. The head fades slowly, leaving a thick lace.

This beer smells more like an Abbey ale than a Biere de Garde. It smells slightly datelike. I detect some spicy notes. Also, I smell some figs. It also smells earthy and yeasty.

This beer tastes like it smells. Fruit like. Some figs, raisins, and dates. More like an Abbey Ale. It tastes earthy as well.

This beer goes down smooth, leaving a figlike aftertaste. It is not very carbonated.

This beer may make a decent session beer. It is not high in alcohol, but the flavor may get old after a while. The figs and raisins may become overbearing.

Overall: This beer was decent, but not my favorite. I would drink it again, but only if there was not Compunction on tap.

Had this courtesy of georgiabeer - much obliged!

Pours a hazy amber color with a one-finger slightly off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of musty and earthy hops with good amounts of sweet malt and lighter amounts of pears.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Sweet malt flavors up front are joined almost immediately by somewhat spicy and earthy flavors from the hops. Midway through the sip light fruit flavors join in before ending with a solid dryness and mild bitterness.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with active carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass and could have a few more.

Overall this is a complex beer and probably the best Biere de Garde I've had, even though technically it's a "Bier de Sonoma". Certainly worth a shot.

Served in a tulip glass at Father's Office in Santa Monica.

It's pours a dark copper color, opaque - a small head. Touching the glass, the beer seems a little bit too cold. The aroma is of spice: cinnamon and clove and some mustiness. Toasted malts come through on the palate followed by a strong yeast. It goes well with Father's Office's incredibly delicious sweet potato fries.

This arrived as a very nice looking deep and dark color with shades of purple and red. There wasn't much head or lacing.

The grains are very apparent in the taste. That aspect of it didn't really hold to my expectations for this beer, but it was done in a good way.

Overall, this was a nice treat. It's a unique offering for the style.
