American Double / Imperial IPA |  11.00% ABV

Availability: Winter

Notes/Commercial Description:
Pliny the Younger, the man, was Pliny the Elder’s nephew and adopted son. They lived nearly 2,000 years ago! Pliny the Elder is our Double IPA, so we felt it was fitting to name our Triple IPA after his son. It is almost a true Triple IPA with triple the amount of hops as a regular I.P.A. That said, it is extremely difficult, time and space consuming, and very expensive to make. And that is why we don’t make it more often! This beer is very full-bodied with tons of hop character in the nose and throughout. It is also deceptively well-balanced and smooth.

How have I not reviewed this beer? I had it three times this past year on tap, and after recently having Hop Suey on tap, I looked back to my review to see how the scores matched up. Huh. Back to the notes for my review!

Appearance: Every time I've had this, it never looked like it was going to knock your socks off. Just a touch past goldenrod towards the brown side, but very, very light for the ABV. White head holds well, laces well, and carbonation level is appropriate.

Smell: Much sweeter than initially expected, but still a very hopped-up nectar. Fruity, grassy, floral, and citrusy notes are all there, with the sweetness from the malt definitely holding its own. Hey, you don't get to 11% without some malt, but the hops do their darndest to hold their own.

Taste: Initial hop bitterness is pretty big, but met with a strong helping of malt, only to be bumrushed with more hoppiness and finishing with an incredibly balanced attack. 11%? What 11%? No booze to speak of anywhere. Citric, grassy hops both take turns laying the lupulin wood to the tongue, but are always met with a good malt backbone. My dad, who doesn't like IPAs, really dug this beer. Which is saying something about the balance. With the amount of hops, the balance is extraordinary. I cannot believe how well this beer fuses together, it really is astonishing. Far from a straight hop-bomb that some make it out to be, I've had much less balanced 6% IPAs.

Mouthfeel: Bitter, but not resiny or tough to handle. In fact, I was expecting more punishment from the amount of hopping, but far from it. Just very well done all the way around.

Drinkability: Never has an 11% beer gone as quickly as it does here. It really blows me away how well the booze is hidden. I had 30oz one sitting and kept saying how the booze just never showed up, until I stood up and realized that indeed, the ABV is as advertised. A wonderful, fantastic beer that I wish were available more often, but the rarity makes it a treat. Is it better than Pliny the Elder? Tough to say. Pliny the Elder is the DIPA all other DIPAs are judged by. This beer is the same for the IIPA: the one that all other IIPAs will be judged against, and for good reason. The balance, flavors, and overall tastiness are truly remarkable.

Pliny the Younger. Oh how I've longed to try you over the years since entering the craft beer world. Finally had the opportunity to try this beer on tap at Lucky Baldwins in Old Town Pasadena earlier in February this year, side by side with PtE might I add. This beer definitely deserves its place on the BA top 250. Piney, floral, boozy, yet still retaining its balance.

This review is based on my experience about two months ago. Pliny the younger is an amped up version of the elder. It's a little bit sweeter than the elder but I think it masks the 10.25% really well. Such a great beer but I've come to expect that from Russian river.
