Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 02-25-2005

Brown Ale aged in used Pinot Noir barrels from local Sonoma County wineries. It is aged for about 12 months with sour cherries, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus added to each barrel. Flavors from the cherries, Pinot Noir and oak balance each other nicely with a little funk from the brett.

Muddy rose in color (amber-pink) with a thin white head and clumps of yeast at the bottom of glass even with a fairly careful pour. It has the awesome, tangy aroma you'd expect from the style, with sour apple notes and other subtle fruity notes, including cherry and plum. Tartness and the fruit alike continue over into the taste, but there's more sweetness and blended smoothness than many other sours. There's some carbonation and syrup in the mouthfeel, but it comes off lighter than many of its peers. It's a great beer.

375ml batch 04X1. This might just be my favorite sour by RR. This sour solder is orange/amber in color with a small head. The old cake whole is inundated with tart and sour cherries, light fruit, oak, funk, and brett.

It's actually a pretty modest looking brown ale, but the lacing is a perfect off-white around the glass. (A taller 10z goblet)

The wine cask element overwhelms, but it's very pleasant.

Again, the wine cask element overwhelms, but it's a very pleasant sour ale. Tart cherry is the key element.

Medium to light body, ample carbonation with a somewhat dry finish.

It's as good as advertised.

Look: Pours a nice clear reddish color without too much head

Smell: Tart cherries and hints of dry red wine

Taste: A complex brew of nice sourness, tart cherries, subtle dry red wine, hints of oak

Feel: Medium body and carbonation

Overall: This is a an excellent brew. Would love it if this was easier to get, though that might not be good for my wallet.

A delicious sour. Look beautiful copper. Smell of cherries and pinot noir. Taste of cherries and delicious sours. A very pricey beer but worth it one of the best sours I've tasted.

L: Pours crystal clear auburn with a silky and luscious billowy white head that settles to around 1/2 inch and stays. Carbonation is light-to-medium and has a champagne like effervescence. One of the most amazing looking beers I've seen.

S: Sour and tart cherry-funk first, with a sour apple and light pear aroma following, not overwhelming but very enticing and inviting.

T: Follows through on the nose, although the cherry flavors are very understated, as is the oaky sour apple/pear funk. What struck most was the silky, creaminess of the cherry flavors, which don't hit at the front of the tongue like everything else, but at the back.

F: Unbelievably creamy, full, rich and smooth. As mentioned above, the cherry flavors coat your mouth like whipped cream and balance out the oak and funk. 7.75% abv and you don't really even taste 0.5% of it.

O: Beautiful to look at, inviting aroma, complex flavors that unfold slowly, but never fight for their place as they move across the palate, all while remaining smooth and silky. The perfect sour for me thus far.

Many thanks to Tom for the bottle!

Pours an amber-orange color, with a foamy, fizzy head, which reveals fiery spots in the glass, when faded.

The aromas reveal cherry stone pits among dried cherries, vanilla, warm, old wood and a zippy funkiness. Due to the present tartness, the cherries get a vinous, fermented note, gracefully balanced by the wooden, leathery malts, which lets their sweeter side stand out even more. Cherries evoke a pungent, rich impression of sunbathed, ripe fruits during a warm summer, with just a hint of invigorating lemon zest to them.

Has an unusual sweet taste for a sour beer, based on its malt and ripe fruit foundation, accompanied by matured, wine soaked chunks of wood, topped with a hint of vanilla. Lactic sourness rises from the fruitiness, giving the cherries a powerful, pleasant character, hovering above musty malts and oak. Acidity then blends outstandingly well into the cherry flavor, adding a vinous note to it without becoming too sour, accentuating the rich fruitiness, balanced by the earth and leather. The beer finishes pleasantly dry nontheless, supported by a vivid carbonation, with cherryskin, toasty stone fruit pits, a vinous tang and tooth quenching sourness, still leaving enough space for rejuvenating cherry qualities.

Poured into a flute glass

Appearance is crystal clear auburn in color. An easy pour results is about a half inch head that settles to about an eighth, and it sticks around awhile. A nice aggressive swirl in the flute shows off a great lace, it looks silky. Carbonation is light but steady, the flute really shows off the look.

The flute also focuses the musty red-wine and unmistakingly oaky- wood scent. I cannot get enough of this scent, I'm picking up sour cherry, but it's more like being in a winery with the smell of wine making all around me in a dank cave.

Taste is a nice funky cherry up front with a strong wooden, and pleasant aftertaste that lingers until your next sip. The red wine is very present and I wouldn't fault anyone that felt this was more wine than beer. The carbonation is spot-on perfect and lifts these lively flavors over the palette.

This is as-good as discussed by my piers here. Absolute home run for delivering the flavor it advertises and with clarity and mouthfeel being spot-on a top sour that you must try.

Appearance – Pours a clear amber red color with a nice head and good lacing that quickly runs back into the glass.

Smell – Sour cherry, vinegar, oak, and pinot. It’s a really nice smell.

Taste – The first thing I notice is that it’s not overly sour (I’m not a fan of super sour beer). Tastes of pinot, vinegar, and oak. A really good sour!

Mouthfeel – Good carbonation, dry, not too sour, with a pleasant funky aftertaste.

Drinkability – I’m generally not a huge fan of sours, but this is an exceptional one to me.

Bottled 1/07/14. Pours slightly cloudy (I poured to fast....) kind of dark rose color with small off white head. Nose is sour vinegar - if it was a wine it would be going back! Bacteria is here in force.
Sharp acidity hits first bam! then an incredible sourness hits the back of the throat BAM. Second sip is better as the mouth adjusts, subtly cherry comes out, sour cherry, white grapes? Lots of funk.

I would have never thought in a thousand years when I began reviewing beers that my first perfect score would be a wild ale. I honestly hated the first few I tried. I have tried to think of any reason to knock this one down a notch but honestly I can't find anything wrong with it!

Appearance: Gorgeous copper red with some brown notes, a little hazy and a beautiful creamy head that just lies there throughout the drinking of this gem.

Aroma: Soft tart cherries, some brett notes, some earthy notes and a slight grape note from no doubt the Pinot barrels, but not overly potent, very nuanced this one. The layering of the aromas is truly magnificent.

Taste: First you get some mild tart notes, but not really sour, just balanced. The Pinot Noir is definitely detected in the flavors, oakey vinous notes dominate, a slight farmhouse note but very subtle, not one that hits you in a dominant way. This beer has a nice clean carbonation on the tongue but it is also very creamy to the mouthfeel. I really don't know how they do it!

Overall: As I said before this is a perfect beer in every way. I am truly surprised. I want more and hope I can obtain many more, I have to be able to share this one with friends, its too good to have all to myself! Thanks man for the trade, truly incredible experience!
