Brown Ale aged in used Pinot Noir barrels from local Sonoma County wineries. It is aged for about 12 months with sour cherries, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus added to each barrel. Flavors from the cherries, Pinot Noir and oak balance each other nicely with a little funk from the brett.

Wow, another fantastic brew from Russian River. Pours a hazy orangish brown with a creamt light beige head. Good lacing.

The nose has the usual tart fruits over subtle malts, musky oak, red wine and ripe mountain cherries.

Taste also has a near perfect blend between the sweet, sour and funky flavors. The cherries and wine barrels are a very nice addition to this ale.

Crisp body and delicate carbonation fit the style perfectly. Like I said, another artisinal creation from Vinnie. (489 characters)

Poured from a 12.7 oz. bottle (Batch 003) received in a trade with Jw347 into a snifter.

Appears brownish orange in color with a one inch off-white head. A bit of spotty lacing is left behind.

Aroma is very tart, cherries are evident but not overpowering. Behind the sour is a nice sweet scent.

Taste is very sour at first and it kind of took me by surprise and gave me the chills. The sips afterward are still dominated by sourness reminiscent of tart cherries and granny smith apples. Tons of wonderfully funky flavors that I can't really describe. There's a woody taste that always seems to be slightly present. This stuff is tasty as hell.

Mouthfeel is medium with a very nice carbonation that allows the flavors to really show off their stuff.

By far the best sour I have tried, excellent. Looking forward to the bottle of Beatification I have in my fridge as well. (875 characters)

Thanks to orbitalrOx for sending me this. Enough with the thanking, let's get to the drinking.

Apricot caramel color. Huge white head. Tons of tiny bubbles. IT'S ALIVE!! This is one busy ass beer. The head tries to relax a little but the upward swell of bubbles keeps it going.

Mouth wateringly sour smell. Unable to pick out the particulars because I'm a maroon, but collectively speaking, this puppy is sow-wah!

Taste is Extra Sour. I'm talking pucker-fucker sour. Probably the best tasting sour outta the five or six I've tried. Sours are such a masochistic style. Like habanero salsa. First reaction is 'shit that hurts' and second reaction is 'give me some more.'

Again I'm at a loss to describe the feel of a sour. Too busy puckering, but I think I notice some carbonation. Finishes quite dry. Gives a certain flatulent feeling to the belly. Or that might be the raisin bran I had for breakfast. Either way, something wicked this way comes.

Overall: not everyday but makes for a rare treat (1,000 characters)

Had a bottle at The Trappist with waltonc. Like the beer a little better than him but have similiar comments

A: Light reddish color, hazy. Virtually no head nor lacing

S: Tart cherries. A mild funk in the background but it's very subtle

T/M: Exactly like it smells. Tart cherries. A little tarter than I remember. A little earthiness, probably from the Brett even though I don't know for sure what that tastes like. Medium bodied and dry. Really good stuff.

D: I really enjoy this beer and could probably drink a couple of glasses. But too many sours in one night has me craving malty sweetness soon thereafter.

An excellent beer. Like this the most of the RR sours. (671 characters)

Had a bottle of this at The Trappist yesterday. Reddish/orange in appearance. Smells like sour cherries, but there also seemed to be a metallic tinge to the smell that was off-putting. Taste was significant sour cherries. Fresh, tart, a little bit of funk. Fairly well balanced. The sourness is under control. Overall, very enjoyable and pretty drinkable. (355 characters)

A: A crisp golden, with the finish adding a bit of haziness between a couple glasses. Moderate head of white.

S: Straight up sour cherry, somewhat peppery.

T: Tart cherry flavours, some notes of apple (sour apple), a soft spiciness and the slightest bit of funk and woodiness.

M: Very dry... Crisp. Leaves very little behind, amazingly clean. I love me a dry drink, especially when they are tart/sour

D: Not too shabby. Not really one of my styles, perhaps, but a good example of the style. (557 characters)

Appearance: A gorgeous, slightly hazy orange amber body with a nice amount of lacing, an attractive head,

Aroma: Mild but very interesting. Mild sweet cherry, definite Brett, cinnamon, spice, sweet golden honey, floral leafy notes, light fruity esters, and a sweet woody note. It's very delicate and subdued, but very complex.

Taste: Tart, and wonderfully dry. There's TONS of wood here - more so than in many other beers, almost like chewing on a stick at some points - and loads of fruity esters. Crisp, dry granny smith apple skins, Concord grapes, tons of funk - smells like a funky cinnamon cherry pie.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, medium-bubbled, fluffy, soft, powdery, puffy.

Drinkability: I'm still not completely on board with this whole wild ale thing - it's a slow and steady acclimation process, as with any new style. That being said, this was a pretty enjoyable beer in my opinion. It was absolutely incredible smelling, not nearly as tart as some wild ales I've (enjoyed/been subjected to), and overall a very pleasant experience, with a completely manageable abv. Pours a hazy orange-ish/ light amber color, with a light tan head. In the aroma, big tart cherries, with some oakiness. In the taste, SOUR!! cherry, oak hints and a touch of vanilla. A sour bite, and a medium to light mouthfeel, with a dry, tart cherry and white grape aftertaste. Big sour, big cherry, FANTASTIC!! (314 characters)

A: Poured a golden copperish color. Very different than the other wild ales I have had from Russian River. Reminds me of Tornado 20th but a few shades lighter. Poured with a 1/2 finger of white head. Good head retention especially for the style.

S: Nice mix of funk/ sweetness and cherries. The funk is subtle but definitely there. The horse blanket is in the way back but it is there.

T: The tartness is caught right on the front of your tongue. Totally up front. Almost like a sweet tart. Little bit of sweetness from the cherries after that. I wouldn't say it is balanced but it is enjoyable. This is nice and tart but more balanced than Beatification I would say.

M: Little bit thicker than other wild ales I have had. Probaly a result of this starting out as a brown ale. Carbonated well.

D: God damn it. Why can't beers like this be on the shelves of the store. That being said this is a treat. The cherries and the fact that it was a brown ale blend everything nicely. A good starter for someone wanting to try a wild ale. I find that Russian River nails that tart sourness better than just about everyone. (1,169 characters)

Pours a light brown, dark gold in color. Smell is tart cherries and funk. There are also some wine qualities from the barrels as well. Taste is more of the tart cherries and a good amount of the Brett showing as well. Tart and sour on the mouthfeel and non-cloying. A real joy to drink. Everything melds itself together well and no one characteristic dominates. Very good sour. (377 characters)

A : Pours a nice murky brown with a decent head. Leaves some nice lacing

S : The Brett aroma is definitely prevelant. There are also notes of cherry and oak

T : There's an excellent tartness throughout the taste. The cherries and oak make a good appearance. The wine like flavors from the Pinot Noir barrels make a nice subtle appearance towards the end.

M : Light to medium bodied, good carbonation, and a nice dry finish

D : Why did I just get one bottle of this? This is an awesome beer that I want to have again and again. This is one beer that I can't find any faults with and have no idea how you would even improve it. (629 characters)

my brother got this in a trade with brewerb

batch 003. poured into small tulip

amber honey color with orange tint. slight haze. nice head, slowly fades to thin, wispy layer. very nice lacing.

white wine and champagne aromas. hints of vinegar, mild barnyard and hay. estery apple and grape, trace of sour cherries. some yeastiness, plus whiff of phenols and wood at the back.

for the palate, the mild cider vinegar/sour cherry tartness, along with fruity apple and champagne grape note melds into that woody and phenolic end. meanwhile, grassy hop bitterness is mild to moderate, peaking right after a moment of farmhose funk, and then eases into a dry, tart finish.

not thin at all. lots of acidic texture behind an overall smoothness. mild carbonation can give a refreshing prickliness to accentuate the initial tartness.

this is a wonderful beer. of all three russian river wild ales i've tried so far, this is the one that i can say is certainly worth EVERY penny. (1,011 characters)

Batch 001. Rusted orange peel with edges of polished brass gleaming under candlelight. The sandstone colored cap has plenty of character, even if it isn't as awe-inspiring as it might have been. A few patches of sudsy lace grace the upper reaches of the glass... while the final pour brings a darker, murkier look that is immensely appealing.

The nose is unquestionably awe-inspiring and lets the sniffer know what's in store when it comes time to soak the taste buds. The word complexity seems horribly inadequate. How about complex complexity? Brown malt, sour cherries and microbe-generated funk. It's all present and it smells fandamntastic!

Supplication is beautiful beer. I don't care how long it took Vinnie to create it (more than one year according to the rear label), it was time well spent. It's obvious that the flavor has held up perfectly well. The body/mouthfeel might be a different story. However, since this is my first bottle, it's impossible to say for sure.

According the Russian River website, this batch is supposed to be less acidic and acetic than subsequent batches. I think it's just right in that regard. Any more acid and flavor and drinkability would have taken a hit. The website also says that cherries are more prominent in 001. It's great that tart fruit dominates, even with so much else going on.

As for the bugs, Brettanomyces was used, as were Lactobacillus and Pediococcus. The horse blanket characteristics of Brett are obvious, as are the smelly feet charcteristics added by the two bacteria. What cheesemakers have known for millenia, brewers are just beginning to discover. That's nothing but good news for craft beer lovers.

The flavor profile is a kaleidoscope of deliciousness. It includes brown malt, fermented sour cherries, a shot of oak-soaked Pinot Noir, fruit vinegar and a lovely funkiness that is anything but overpowering. Warming doesn't change much, but then the beer was mind-blowingly deep right out of the chute.

I'm still not sure what sort of mouthfeel an American wild ale should have. This one is light-medium and the carbonation lacks softness. It still fits the beer very well, however, which is the biggest reason why it hasn't been penalized too severely.

Supplication (noun): humble prayer, entreaty or petition. Mr. Cilurzo, I humbly ask that you do whatever is in your power to return to the days when those of us who reside outside of California were able to have Russian River beer delivered to our homes. Supplication is well worth its lofty ranking on The Top Beers on Planet Earth. (2,564 characters)

Pours a bright orange with minimal white head. Smell is very nice! Lemons, ripe pear, sour green apples, green grapes, tropical pine apple! Wow! So many smells coming and going! Taste is wow. Begins with a puckering lemon juice, hints of lime, white wine tropical notes of pine apple and a wonderful transition to a green apple finish. Mouthfeel is refreshingly carbonated... -on tap at the Falling Rock $6.50 per 1/2 pint and worth every penny. Nice brown-red-orange color in the wine glass. Smells sour, dull, hmmm, bottle was better. It tastes nice and sour with some cherry and it does pucker. A lot of people were ordering this and I already knew why. An awesome sour but I preferred the bottled version oddly. (339 characters)

i am going to be visiting russian river two weeks from today, so i decided it was a good excuse to open my bottle of supplication. been looking forward to this one for a while! thanks to fartingdog and DrJay for helping this to get here.

375ml bottle, corked and caged. batch 003. sampled august 17/08.

bottle opens with a hefty pop. pours murky reddish orange with a small head of fine white bubbles. the head quickly drops to a ring around the glass, with a small patch in the center from the etching on the bottom of my chimay glass.

aroma is great. as soon as i opened the bottle i could smell it. tart cherry. cider vinegar. lemon. leather. horse blanket. green tobacco leaves. oak and vanilla. white wine. light citrus. bread and cracker. bit of grain. can't wait for the taste!

taste is excellent. intense puckering sourness at first, quickly fading to a nice light citrus sweetness. lemon and cider vinegar that becomes more tangerine and orange peel. slightly acidic, but not overpowering. after a few sips i become accustomed to the sourness and can see a little deeper into it. white bread and a bit of cracker. faint sour cherry. bit of leather and horse blanket funk, but a little less than i expected from the aroma. it plays well with the other elements here. earthy and slightly herbal, bringing in that tobacco element again. vanilla and raw oak. white wine. green grapes. light alcohol. as it warms a little more caramel and nutty character comes out too. wow, i think i'm in love.

mouthfeel is great. medium high carbonation level that feels a bit higher due to some sting from the acidity, but once you grow accustomed to the acidity you can see that it's not quite as high. body is about medium, but with a fairly clean dry finish.

drinkability is great. the interplay and balance between all the elements here is superb. the depth and complexity keeps you going back for more. i wish i had a case of this so i could just keep drinking it... (1,968 characters)

Finally time to supplicate. Pours a nice clear brownish red with a white fizzy head. Nose is balls out sour funk with some oak and very slight maltiness. Taste follows with typical wild RR flavor. Lovin the brown ale base here, as it adds an interesting subtle flavor to the brew. some light fruit flavor in here, but mostly a brett funk face melter. mouthfeel is nice, a little thicker than you average wild. Drinkability is second to few or none, as are all the RR sours i have yet tried. Thanks again mac to the Murch. (557 characters)

I was lucky enough to have errantnight pick me up a few of these from the brewery shortly after the last release, thanks Derek! Supplication fills the tulip a murky hazy deep crimson with hints of earth. The body glows with orange highlights when backlit but the murkiness is consistent. Tiny carbonation bubbles rush up the sides of the glass to the dirty beige head. A nice looking fingers worth of head formed on a soft pour and manages to stick around for the remainder of the drink. The head also seems to have a slight pinkish tint to it. Sheet lacing and drink lines are left down the glass. This is an excellent looking beer.

The brett is the first thing that hits my nose. Cobwebs and damp farmhouse soil are both mild but certainly present. There's tartness from the cherries which flow seamlessly into a mouthwatering sourness. The nose is very earthy with notes of wood, leathery qualities, and mustiness. The aroma of this beer is all around inviting and simply mouthwatering. Vinous wine like qualities takes a ghost like foothold in the background of this beer.

The tartness is right upfront but falls short of sour; it will get you to pucker slightly. The cherries used come around as soon as this beer hits my tongue along with the damp soil and acetic acid. The tartness seems to fade as time goes by and there's a touch of sweetness that keeps things reasonably balanced. The oak comes through nicely as this beer warms and the vinous qualities join the fun. All the flavors really come together as this beer begins to warm and the sweet/ sour characteristics play off each other very nicely.

The carbonation in this beer is spot on. It's aggressive and quick moving but soft enough to keep from being prickly. The body is on the lighter side of the spectrum and becomes airy the second it hits the tongue. The finish is dry and leaves me wanting more.

Like I said earlier each drink leaves me wanting another right away. Supplication is very thirst quenching and the sweet and sour flavors keep me coming back for more. I can see the acidity causing some problems over a long period of drinking though.

Supplication is another wonderful creation from Russian River. The levels of tartness along with the semi-sweet qualities make this a great beer. Very thirst quenching with a little of that puckering ability. Thanks for picking these up for me Derek! (2,403 characters)

On draught at Belmont Station, served in a chimay goblet, Supplication is a gorgeous pale burgundy rose, with a small white head that leaves light lace.

Smell is pretty funky, a lactic sourness and touch of musty brett horseblanket, with touches of wine and tropical fruits, limes in particular, it sweetens as it warms.

Taste is tart but not overly sour (well at least compared to the last RR sour I had, Beatification), lots of acidity, which is my favorite sour component, citrusy but not particularly vinous, or woody for that matter. Maybe not the most complex wild ale, but it's very tasty and hitting the spot on this 100F day.

Mouthfeel is spritzy and dry, with a medium body and some lingering tannins, which seem to be the main contributions from the wine barrel aging.

Drinkability is very nice, flavorful and acidic without being overly sour or sweet, no vinegar notes either, it's really close to my taste in wild ales, well made, and gets bonus points for rarity, especially on draught! (1,008 characters)

Poured from the bottle into a goblet. Pours a clearish orangy-brown color with a think wispy white head. Lots of champagne type bubbles that fade quickly. I don't know if i have ever seen a color like this before, either.
WHOA- the smell is pungent. As soon as I open the beer you can get a whiff from across the room. I get a lot of vinegar, some musty red wine, some alcohol and the barnyard as well on the nose. Smell is consistenty strong throughout.
Tast is similar. I get the huge pucker of the sour cherries, vinegar etc. right up front. Aftertaste mellows it quite a bit and makes it even more enjoyable. Bit of alcohol on the end.
Nice champagne fizz on the mouthfeel.
Fairly drinkable for the style- has a lot going on throughout the beer and my mouth is pretty puckered after this one. (796 characters)

Reviewing from notes a week or so ago. Batch 003

A - Tangerine-to-caramel with an off-white head

S - apple, pear, yeast, pepper

T - Tart like sour apple, tangerine tind (a bit sharper than orange, so I'm guessing here), lots of dried apricot especially at higher temps, very sour cherries, slight funky note that morphs into a meaty taste - like proscioutto and melon. Quite a bit going on

M - thin and bubbly with a "10% juice" backbone (i guess that means slight syrup underneath)

D - quite high - almost puckeringly sour at first, but refreshing. High temps it becomes a bit too much like juice

Batch 003 that I brought back from the brewery during a Bay Area trip last March. Great time and waited long enough to pop this cork.

A: Amber/orange pour that fizzled like champagne when poured. The body is translucent, but a tady hazy at the same time. Poured effervecence lingers to form a lily pad of head that has centered in my glass.
S: Perfectly-soured cherries! A nice aroma pronounces the said added fruit along with light grapefruit.
T: Puckering sour deliciousness. Magnificence abounds. Cherries punch out again, as well as brilliant sour familiarity that has come to be expected from RR.
M: A rich, sweet liquid pours over my tongue, across palate and swirls down throat. Perfectly balanced flavors drink extremely well.
D: Rarity and scarceness should not stop you from obtaining/relishing/savoring/enjoying this offering from RR. Amazing! I will jump at the opportunity to enjoy this beer again. (915 characters)

It pours a hazy peach colour with a 1" head of foam.There's some good lacing and foam is shrinking but looks like some of it will be around at the end of the session. Ok, the foam did leave the scene entirely but, what the hell..

The smell is just what I like to find in American Wild Ales...huge sour notes from cherries and lemons. Also a big yeasty profile with some vanilla and oak. Super nice nose.

The taste is as good if not better than the nose. Wow. Big oaky and yeasty notes with some yeasty tones and big fruity tartness from lemons, apricots, and cherries. There's also an underlying sweetness coming from vanilla. And did I mention the funk? No? My bad. The Brett is definitely present here working its magic, intertwining with all the other luscious flavours. and bringing real justice to the style.

Marvelous, simply marvelous. The mouthfeel is medium, the carbonation is brisk but fits this ale so well, and it finishes with that sour cherry tartness that just demands that I take another sip tout suite. Eminantly drinkable for me, to say the least.

Batch 003. Hazy orange brown in colour with a large fluffy cream coloured head. Head lasts and lasts, even growing for a minute after the pour. Rings of lacing as I drink. Looking good.

Smells of oak, vanilla, some cherry, orange or lemon rind and a strong acidic sourness/tartness. A feast for the nose.

Tartness right from the beginning. Sour and citric, a bit musty and cetainly fruity. Pineapple impressions in the middle and finish. Oak is there throughout, but it is not overpowering. Puckering and lip smacking.

Very dry to the mouth, with a bit of body and ready carbonation. Acidic in the finish, leaves as much after-feel as aftertaste.

I like it, very much, but thinking about more than one bottle at a time is not appealing. That being said, I'm sure the brewer didn't intend this beer to be sessioned. Something to savour for sure, if you are a fan of sourness, this will test just how much of a fan you are. (927 characters)

Batch 003

Pours orange with amber highlights with a big airy head that laces nicely. Active carbonation consistently wells up in the center of the tulip glass, pushing it's way through the head to the surface.

Smells of acidic fruits and yeast are met with a big blast of tart lighter fruits on the tongue. Slight apricot mixed with green apple quickly gets taken over by a big ball of sour funk that fades into a very slight grain note that then transitions back to some slight wood tannins and more tartness. The cherries are here but they are far from taking over, I think they've added more in the way of color (which was just awesome, love the way this beer looks in the glass).

The finish is dry and crisp and is carried along the whole way by a wonderful blend of carbonation and tartness, body is medium. I wish that this bottle was twice the size that it was, but I'll relish the fact that I've got a few more waiting. Just a highly drinkable and highly enjoyable brew. (981 characters)
