Notes/Commercial Description:
Brown Ale aged in used Pinot Noir barrels from local Sonoma County wineries. It is aged for about 12 months with sour cherries, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus added to each barrel. Flavors from the cherries, Pinot Noir and oak balance each other nicely with a little funk from the brett.

Outstanding. Thin, thin head dissipates, but continues to create sliding lace as I sip. If you're a sour/wild lover, you owe it to yourself to try the finest I've ever had in the style. Tart nose right off the bat incites salivation, dried not-so-ripened cherries . . . some kind of subtle lactose in the taste, drying tannin, tart flavor with cherries and big oak. Don't have words. It's one of those beers that make you think: how'd they make a beer do that? For the record, I don't like wilds!

Batch 008 pours ruby-brown with a very thin, off-white head which contributes a spotty lace. Aromas of cherry, oak, funk, and some lactic sourness create a wonderful bouquet. The tart and lactic sourness blend amazingly well with the sweet and tart cherry flavors. Tongue tickling carbonation in this medium bodied ale. Another GREAT beer from a GREAT brewery!

Cheers!

350ml bottle poured into a RR "TION" glass.

A: Pours a deep murky brownish red with a minor head. Minimal head retention and minor lacing is present.

S: Smells of funk and tart cherries maybe a some alcohol peaking through.

T: Taste is very sour and tart upfront, middle is packed full of sour cherries and finishes with a dry wine like bite.

M: Medium body and plenty of carbonation.

O: Interesting sour. Smells more sour than it tastes and as others mentioned, the wine barrel aging gives you some reprieve from the sour funk.

I still can't say i'm a huge fan of sours, but this does make me want to try more of the style.

Reviewing Supplication from Russian River Brewing Company. This is one of the most highly regarded sours out there, and I am very excited to finally get the chance to try it. Thank you Matt Hope for sending me this beer!

Batch 010. 355 ml bottle served in a Great Lakes snifter and enjoyed on 05/17/12. Review is from notes.

Appearance: Pours a dark copper color with a thin layer of fizzy head at pour that settles into a fizzy ring around the glass. Poor lacing, but decent retention. 4/5

Smell: Funky vinegar and lots of white grape and pear. Stale/dirty/earthy orange malt. Some "cheap plastic band-aid" aroma too. 4/5

Taste: Bright orange, white wine and acidic, tart white grape. Sour cherries and a little fruity pear flavor too. Lots of crisp flavor, but a very nice bitter sweet-and-sour mix of flavors with only a modest funk. Layering, dry tartness and increasing pucker effect. 4.5/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, high carbonation. Nice zesty tart citrus pop and sizzle on the tongue. Tart, dry finish. 4.5/5

Overall: A very tasty sweet-and-sour wild ale. The nose was pretty funky, making me skeptical as to whether I would enjoy the beer, but the taste is much smoother and not very funky.

Recommendation: A great non-funky sour. I'd recommend this even for the casual beer drinker. Fans of Citra-hopped beers like Zombie Dust and Heady Topper will probably enjoy this one a lot.

Pairings: Eight year old white cheddar cheese with Parmesan black pepper crackers.

Cost: $10 for a 355 ml bottle made from glass that is so thick, you'd swear this was a blunt weapon.

Brinking a Supp Batch 9. Ok, I am spoiled by living in Europe for the past few years and having visited the Lambic region in Belgium many times. This is a great beer, no doubt, and I love it, but there are many out there that have a lessor rating that could and should be rated better. Many from the Lambic region that are pretty obscure (not going to list any plugs for other beers on this Supplication review).

A: Deep ruby-brown hued with a golden amber tone! Looks so delish!! Nice one finger head.

S: Sour and bitter...really nice! The cherries (big time sour cherries!!!) and pinot noir are in there with an awesome balance of fruity flavors! Nice!

T: Wow! so nice. Love the sour notes and the cherries and the oak and pinot background notes. Now I know why this beer is rated a 99!

M: Smooth and bitterly sweet...really nice!

O: Worthy. I like it a lot. Really coming on board with RR wild ales and this one did not disappoint! Simply put...wow.

On tap at Bobby G's. 5/17/12. Batch 10. Pours a reddish brown amber with a small white head settles to a ring and leaves some very light lacing on the glass. The aroma has lots of lactic acid. Cherry, funky earthiness, slight hop presence, and a hint of acetic acid. The taste is tart with a light initial sweetness. Lots of lactic, decent amount of cherry, and just a bit of brett funkiness. The finish is tart and drying with a bit of acetic acid. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Certainly one of the best regularly available sours.
