Notes/Commercial Description:
Brown Ale aged in used Pinot Noir barrels from local Sonoma County wineries. It is aged for about 12 months with sour cherries, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus added to each barrel. Flavors from the cherries, Pinot Noir and oak balance each other nicely with a little funk from the brett.

A: Pours a semi hazy brownish color Nice bubbles flowing from the bottom
S: Tart cherries, funk, fruity esters, strong funky cherry sourness dominates.
T: Follows the nose. Tart cherries, lemon zest, sour apple, and a slight oak note in the back of the palate. Really balanced. Not too sour, but just enough to get you hooked.
M: Pretty decent carbonation, dry mouthfeel, medium bodied.
O: This is pretty delicious. As it warmed sat for a while I got more of the oak in the nose as well as the flavor. It's pretty complex and just damn good. Only complaint was the price, and of course I had to drive to Philly to pick it up.

This beer came highly recommended by my a trusted friend and considering I can find it more readily in Denver I decided to open my bottle.

The beer poured an nice amber/red and had a nice single finger head with itty-bitty bubbles throughout.

The nose was of sour cherries with a little bit of wood.

The taste was a dry tartness with a slight dark fruit bitterness developing into sour cherries and finishing with oak on the tongue.

The mouthfeel was elegant and fitting for as much esteem as I have heard this beer receive over the past few months.

Overall this is a great beer with a dry finish that doesn't turn me off like some beers I have recently tasted. Not much sweet which I found very inviting for this beer.

I love living in Philly and having this beer easily accessible all the time. This was the first American Wild Ale I ever tasted, back in 2008, and I remember actually liking it despite the total sourness of it all. I had a college buddy whose Dad was a beer collector and he broke these out randomly one night for me. Great guy...

This is Batch 8. Poured into a wine glass.

Very attractive beer, with a robust off-white head, and an excellent clarity. Beautiful hues of red, orange and copper. Careful not to pour out any of the yeast!

Smells like sweet cherries and funky funk. Definitely has a sweetness to the aroma which is quite a pleasant contrast to the obvious "wild" aroma.

The beer is actually less sweet than anticipated and is only slightly less great than I remember it to be. Soft notes of cherry are present throughout and become more predominant as the palate becomes more adjusted to the sourness.

Great amount of carbonation for the style and it has that characteristic enamel-stripping quality. Medium body.

This is a favorite beer of mine, and has remained very close to what I remember from before. I consider this to be my current benchmark of the American Wild Ale category.

This beer pours a deep golden raisin color with great carbonation and just a thin head. There is an immediate oak and banana aroma. The beer has a clear tart beginning that quickly gives way to fermented fruit. You notice the wine barrel aging at the back of a sip. Cherry tartness is not overly sour and well balanced. The carbonation of this beer really enhances the mouthfeel. All in all a excellent wild ale!

375mL bottle of Russian River Supplication - batch number 8.

Appearance: Supplication pours an interesting blood orange color that produces a frothy off-white head that slowly fizzles down to a thin, film-like layer.

Smell: there's a bit of funkiness in the nose.. Pinot Noir barrels inoculated with brettanomyces makes for a very nice aroma.

Taste: Supplication's fruit juiciness really sets it apart from the much drier Consecration; the sour cherries seem to enhance this barrel aged offering in a way that currants simply cannot. The wine barrel adds another layer of complexity by imparting its oakiness and Pinot Noir flavors.. and the bacteria (lacto and pedio) adds a very pleasant sourness to this stellar wild ale.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied with plenty of carbonation (refermented in the bottle).

Overall: Supplication is surprisingly refreshing.. and complex. Truly a world-class beer.

Batch 008

Pours a slightly murky brown with hints of gold with a quickly dissipated head.

Smells at first of tart cherries meets wine, then some thing different and funky, those must be the bacterias.

Taste is all pucker, sour fruit candy, slightly winey and a lemony tart finish, with a hint of musk(which I really like).

Feels light and bubbly, kind of champagny, kind of lambic, kind of winey.

What is this? I admit this is my first sour, and I enjoyed it. Though confusing to me as a beer, it fits the style described by the site. Huge wine characteristics make the flavors complex and tangy. Bizarre, to say the least, it's like a hybrid of several different things, perhaps not my style, but I can see how this style is love it or hate it. Funny thing is, I'm kind of in the middle.

Batch 006X2. Long time fan of Supplication, first time reviewing it.

A - beautiful red dark amberish hue. Not exactly clear, but close enough for the style

S - funk, tart aroma with a little sour cherry and lemon.

T - Wow! The tart, sour, mouth Pickering lactic acid is a kick in the pallet! Awesome beer. The oak, cherry, sour balance is unbelievable. It finishes with a lingering lemony lactic taste, with a very very slight vinegar/acetic touch. Fantastic! The Pinot noir barrel adds a bit of depth that really comes out as it warms.

M - sparkling carbonation on the tongue. Medium body, crisp from start to finish.

O - Outstanding beer!!! I could honestly drink this everyday! It's tart/sour enough, but displays the beautiful notes that fruit and Pinot noir can add to this style. Beautifully sour, but drinkable beyond belief. I'd recommend this beer as the best 'American Wild' that i've tried.
