American Wild Ale |  7.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
Brown Ale aged in used Pinot Noir barrels from local Sonoma County wineries. It is aged for about 12 months with sour cherries, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus added to each barrel. Flavors from the cherries, Pinot Noir and oak balance each other nicely with a little funk from the brett.

Poured into a Chimay Chalice

Appearance: minimal head, cloudy, dark red/brown in color, some sediment, low carbonation

Smell: cherry, sour mix, and sweet sugary fruit

Taste: cherry, wood, sour mix, and sweet sugary fruit

Mouthfeel: sweet and sour, light bodied, medium carbonation but very prickly--maybe due to the sourness.

Overall: I remember this being better on tap at Extreme Beer Fest a couple years ago. That said in the bottle this is still excellent. Very sour, yet not as sour as most I have had from Cantillon. I could drink several glasses of this if I could find it. One of my favorites from Russian River.

A - Pours a light redish brown with 1.5 finger head. Decent retention, excellent lacing.

S - Green apples, oak, slight vanilla

T - Taste starts out sour and funky with lots of citric notes. Sour cherries and grapes appear in the middle. Finishes very sour and astringent.

M - Full bodied, medium acidity, great balance, nice complexity and long finish

O - One of the best American Wild Ales I've had. Glad I got to try this one.

A - Pours a clear ruby orange with a two finger head that dissipates to just a thin layer. The lacing is light to moderate. Nice amount of carbonation streaming up from the bottom of the glass.

A - Tart and sour smelling. Slight hint of the Pinot Noir barrels. Tart cherry aroma. Also a nice earthly spice aroma from the wild yeast. Very interesting smelling beer.

T - Wow, extremely tart and sour. Sours Cherry. Drinks like a dry white wine only more funky. Sour from start to finish. Becomes easier to drink with every sip. Finished very dry.

M - Medium in body. Carbonated very well. Flavor duration is long.
Mouth watering.

O - One of the most interesting beers I've had. You gotta enjoy sours to like this one.

Consumed Saturday, January 7 2012 at Blue Palms Brewhouse, Hollywood, CA in a snifter.

The beer is a clear dark Amber with a fine white head of very modest height.

No aroma at all. Odd.

Flavor is slightly sweet, peachy before the sourness kicks in. Somewhere between tart and unbearable, it is long lasting and fairly well- moderated. The finish is lightly bitter. Overall, fairly straightforward and lacking in complexity.

Mouthfeel is unremarkable.

Relatively drinkable.

Not a big fan.

Served on-tap @ Higgins Restaurant and Bar in Portland, Oregon and presented in a snifter. Final pour of the keg = lucky me.

Pours a hazed orange amber with active carbonation and impressive lacing.

Tart aromas of wild yeast, apple cider and sour cherries.

Opens with a tart snap of cider and biscuity malt flavors. Active, prickly carbonation throughout. Moves into a balsamic vinegar middle with hints of wild yeast and sour cherries. Puckering mouthfeel. Sharp hop presence emerges before reverting to mild malt sweetness. Finishes dry with a touch of wood smoke. So very sessionable; many regrets that I had time for only one. Then again, there was no more to be had.

Batch 04x03, enjoyed recently.

What a beer. It's nearly the perfect sour. Sour cherries and brett funk dominate the aroma. The taste is so complex. Sour cherries. Tartness. Sourness. Oak. Mouth watering. Red Sour Patch Kids, liquified. It was a real challenge for me to work through a bottle of Supplication. It is so good, but it made my mouth work too damn hard. Too much salivating and puckering. That can be taken as a tongue-in-cheek compliment, but it is also its only detracting quality. I can't sit and drink bottle after bottle of this. My mouth would. not. survive.

Amber red with white film and speckles of yeast. Oak, vanilla, tin, cherry and sandalwood on the nose.
Tart cherries, some brown malt warmth, gentle sourness, a brandy tang and woody hum.
Vague fruit finish and dry linger. Smooth, round, crisp, light.

Sourness and oak both very measured, and not much funk. More balanced, rounded and nuanced than any kriek. Not my thing, but a stunner just the same.

Enjoyed two bottles of this around New Year's 2011/12 while in Southern California. Loved the first bottle so much, I went back for another. Review from notes.

Appearance: Brown and ruby colored body. Rather clear, but I didn't get a tone of head activity on a gentle pour into a wine glass.

Aroma: Tart nose, but hints at balancing sweetness. Some red wine tannins.

Taste: Great rush of tang from the cherry tartness combining with sweet malt and complex funk of everything else. As I enjoyed each bottle, I found it a marvel in that every drink allowed me to enjoy the complexity of the beer in new ways. Sour, sometimes puckeringly so, is not that best word to describe this beer. That would sell the sweetness and funk short.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: Pretty rich beer to drink. Not all that heavy in the mouth, but the high stakes flavors make this one a huge endeavor. A tasty endeavor.

Overall: One of the best sours I've ever had, which isn't saying a ton. But I have been lucky to sample a few Russian River sours in the past in this is by far my favorite one.
