Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 02-25-2005

Brown Ale aged in used Pinot Noir barrels from local Sonoma County wineries. It is aged for about 12 months with sour cherries, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus added to each barrel. Flavors from the cherries, Pinot Noir and oak balance each other nicely with a little funk from the brett.

Short beige head leaves a cap and collar. Body is a murky turd brown.

Barrel berries is the name of his game.

Omnomnom. Tarty retardy. Cherries. Takes the aroma to a whole 'nother level.

Highly carbonated, perfect. Medium mouthfeel.

It's official, one great sour. One of my favorites in fact. Sour power! Thanks egrace84 for the wind down beer.

Draft into snifter at KnB Wine Cellars in San Diego, Calif., on July 28, 2012. Two fingers of head when I got it. Honey caramel auburn color. White/tan head/lacing with great retention all around (sides and top).

Smelled dirty rotten fruit, plum, peach, apple, purple grape, cherry, pear.

Tasted Sweet Tarts, Smarties, Sour Gummi Worms, tart, sweet. Nothing like the nose.

Light-to-medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long sweet candy finish. Consistent and long lasting.

Finally got to try this beer and it didn’t disappoint. Smooth, tasted great and sweet.

On tap at Tria Rittenhouse in Philly on 7/5/12 and served in a tulip glass.

Pour: Deep copper with two fingers of off white head.

Smell: Tart cherries to the max with a great hay musk.

Taste: Tart cherries and some sour apples too. Sour maltiness on the finish. Vinous flavors lended from the pinot noir barrel aging. Equally pleasant woody characteristics.

Mouthfeel: Really nice tartness that isn't overpowering. Carbonation is really fantastic. An interesting dynamic between the dryness and the tartness. The crisp dry body encourages you to keep drinking, but the tart finish that lingers on the palates demands that you slow down to enjoy this beer because your palate will become too coated with tart cherries.

Overall: Really great sour, but I think I prefer Sanctification

Batch 10. I've had this beer a number of times, finally getting around to reviewing it.

Pours a clear reddish brown with a medium white head. Smell is top-notch: red wine, cherries, oak and lactic sourness all are in there and combine together quite nicely and make my mouth water. Flavor follows the nose almost exactly, red wine and oak stand out at first, then we get a little bit of the sweet cherries in the middle before a blast of sourness hits on the back end. It's really quite complex and excellent. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with really nice carbonation with a great mouth-coating bite. Overall, this really proves that Russian River's year-round wilds are better than most of the other limited wilds out there. It's a great beer with a lot going on.
