Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 02-25-2005

Brown Ale aged in used Pinot Noir barrels from local Sonoma County wineries. It is aged for about 12 months with sour cherries, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus added to each barrel. Flavors from the cherries, Pinot Noir and oak balance each other nicely with a little funk from the brett.

Giving this a 2nd try. I didn't think much of it about a year ago, but I have grown to like Sours since.

375ml bottle (batch 7) poured into RR Tulip

A: Reddish brown color, it's transparent, but a bit murky. Lots of bubbles forming in the bottom of the cup. Half a finger head, almost no lacing.

S: Sour fruit... (cherries probably as written on the bottle - hard to make out), yeast, vinegar-like scent, maybe a bit of grapes

T: Tartness and sourness hit you - then a small pause - then more sourness towards the end. I get the wine flavor in my mouth a little bit and at the end lingering (mostly as an after taste), but it's mostly sour, acidic, and tart cherries, lemon (especially in the middle and towards the end, lemon kicks in, followed by extreme second wave of sourness). Very very sour (but not as sour as Beatification)

M: High carbonation, light-to-medium body. Near Perfect.

O: I enjoyed this bottle a lot more than my first one. In fact, I will drink this more in the near future. I still seem to prefer Temptation and Beatification over this one, but regardless, an excellent sour.

A - Nice clear amber color. Finger of head disappears quickly.

S - Cherries and wood are most prominent. Definitely get a sour, nose-crinkling smell.

T - Very nice! Puckering sour cherries are huge in this one. Tons of pinot noir barrel taste. Liked it a whole lot more than I thought I would.

M - Lots of carbonation, but in this one it works. Very cool, beer itself is mouth-coating.

O - Best sour I've had so far. Look forward to trying it again.

batch 007

At the beginning of the pour it was a golden color but by the end it was a bright reddish orange with one finger of fizzy white head the quickly recedes to a thin ring around the edge of the glass.

The nose is full of oak funk up front, behind that a tart lactic acidity and then even behind that a sharp acetic sour cherry smell. As it warms the oak subsides and it gets more tart. It is now almost room temp and the fruit has really opened up into a complex cherry aroma with some definite pinot like scents (currants, cherries, bright red berries) with just the slightest metallic twang.

The flavor is very tart and somewhat puckering but not overpoweringly sour. Some dry oaky bitterness behind the fruit.

Relatively thin body which is to be expected for the style and a moderate amount of carbonation that avoids being spritzy

Overall this is a high quality sour, really glad I had the whole little bottle to myself to let it warm up and explore the intricacies, I will definitely pick this up again if I see it.

Had this at the brewery. Pours a dark, ruby amber. Tastes quite sour, but it's not overpowering. In fact it tastes fucking awesome. LOts of sour cherry notes that just made my mouth water. A little bit of tartness with each sip too. I wish I had another pint right now.
