Notes/Commercial Description:
Brown Ale aged in used Pinot Noir barrels from local Sonoma County wineries. It is aged for about 12 months with sour cherries, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus added to each barrel. Flavors from the cherries, Pinot Noir and oak balance each other nicely with a little funk from the brett.

Served on tap at Russian River brewing company, Santa Rosa Ca. First I'll have to warn that this is the most expensive beer that RR makes, coming in at $12 for a 12oz bottle, so the best way to enjoy it is by the glass which is only about 6 bucks. The reason being is that this beer is aged in pinot noir barrels in the nearby wine country, and uses expensive ingredients such as the sour cherries which gives the brown ale the sour.

Most people will admit they don't like sour beer, and it does sound gross at first, but give this a try and you won't be disappointed. This is the kind of sour ale where each sip beckons for the next. A refreshing change from the hop overload of RR's famous other beers. The taste is dominated by the sourness of it, but in an enjoyable way. The mouthfeel is wine like in it's tartness, but entices you to drink more. This is a beer that defines specialty, hand craftsmanship, and care. Get it on tap if you can, this beer does NOT bottle well.

Popped the cork on this bottle and poured into a large tulip glass.

A: Looks like a filtered apple cider - dark brown, pretty clear. strong stream of carbonation flowing from the bottom of the glass.

S: The funky yeast is apparent with some slight fruity notes of cherry, pear and grapes.

T: Flavor is outstanding. Nice tart flavors to start with a dry fruity finish.

M: Nicely carbonated by not overly so. Gives a little fizz on the tongue. A very nice medium to complex.

O: This is one of the best sour beers I've had to date.

Served into snifter
On-draft at Falling Rock Taphouse

From notes.

A: Medium burgundy. 1.5 (white) fingernail head.

S: Sweet cherry, tart apples, oak, vanilla, and hint of fig. Nice!

T: Much like the nose, but oh so tasty! Sweet cherry up-front with immediate dry tartness. Hints of oak and bacteria blend amazingly well together with a masterful (soft) citrus finish. Delicious through and through and to enjoy it on draft is even better than the bottle.

M: Light-medium bodied with medium carbonation.

O: Another fantastic beer from RR! This one is usually my go-to beer from RR as it is usually readily available and uber choice all-around. The complexity, yet simplicity is so perfect that words do not do it justice. If you haven't tried it, go get it! If you have tried it and don't like it, send the rest my way. If you enjoy it like me, I dig your style and maybe I'll invite you when I crack open the large format - that will be epic.

I have been waiting to open this Batch 8 things of beauty. Well, Super Bwl Sunday seems as good of a time as ever. On he brief tip, this beer delivers on everything it promises. The Pint Noir barrels come thru nicely, the cherries along with the trio of yeasts make this a tart number with a delicious zing. Very nice mouthfeel, but the flavor is the star of the show, and I believe this flavor earned an Oscar nomination in my eyes. This beer has gone to territory only held previously by Abyss and BCBS. Well, there is a new King of the hill, so let us see if any other wild ales or sours can knock Supplication off its new perch. Challenge!

Reviewed from notes.

A- Pours a rusty copper with a finger of off-white head. Streaming carbonation. Nice lacing. Huge pop off of the cork.

S- Tart green apples. Cherries, with a wine-like buttery quality. Acidic vinegar with a bit of funk.

T- Puckering sourness. Tart cherry, green apple, lacto, and a mineral quality. Buttery wine sweetness.

M- Medium thin with high carbonation. Extremely drying finish.

O- One of the best sours for a reason. I've had this one multiple times and still love it.

Picked up a bottle this afternoon at the brewpub. Batch 008. Poured into a snifter.

A- Pours a dark amber/ruby color with two fingers of creamy, thick beige head.

S- Big sour funk, dark cherries, oak, vinous character blends into the background.

T- Big tart flavor up front, it's strong but not as palate thrashingly sour as some lambics and gueuze. Dark cherries and dry wine flavors blend nicely together well along with more acetic sourness. A bit of fruity sugar towards the finish. Yeast funk rounds everything out, but isn't that powerful by any stretch. Some light, sweet malts.

M- Medium-bodied, creamy, smooth feel, big tartness slides into a dry, slightly astringent finish.

O- One of the best American sour beers you can get, a really tasty, refreshing brew.
