A - beautiful apple cider color with bubbles rushing to the top. A nice amount of white head sits on top and is sticking around. Looks extremely inviting.
S - a ton of cherries, some apples and oak.
T - cherries right away, then some citrus and apple in the middle. A good amount of tartness, which smooths out on the back.
M - great carbonation and feel, this beer sits on my tongue like a fluffy cloud. Great balance of tart and sweet.
D - it's a sipper, but one I could stick with all night.

wow what a beer. pours an off red/orange with a white head about 1/2 thick. the smell is awesome. smells like other beers of this type, but not too overbearing. you can smell the cherries with a lot of funk behind it.
the taste is awesome. sour, but so so balanced. this beer is nearly perfect as far as taste. the mouthfeel is great. fun beer to drink. i guess thats the best way to describe it. definitely want again.

From bottle to flute glass
Pours an opaque, apricot-orange with effervescent carbonation and a small 1/4-inch head. The nose is sharp red wine vinegar and sour cherries, while Brett funk is all over the place. Even in the flute glass the aromas are pouring out.
As you sip, tart, puckering cherries surround your palate and the back of your tongue. This is as sour as I've tried a beer. But it's far from one-dimensional. The cherries combine with citrusy lemon, which carry into a distinctive Brett funk. There's some sweetness in the background, which tastes like it comes from grapes more than malts. This is a really phenomenal profile. With all of the untamed flavors in this ale, the hops are enough to create a drying effect, leaving the finish clean and slightly sour.
It feels light on you tongue, but there's plenty of carbonation to wash away any residue. It really has a festive feel, especially drinking from the flute glass.
Once you become accustomed to its puckering aspects, your taste buds are in for a complex, revolving treat. There is amazing flavor here, and the relatively moderate 7.5% will leave you somewhat coherent by the end of your glass. I'll be drinking this as often as I can.

Acquired in a trade from Emmasdad, thanks! Poured from a 12.68 oz bottle into a Chimay chalice.
Appearance: Looks like a deep brown apple cider. When held up to the light it glows dark red. Pours a fingers worth of light brown/tan head. Very dense. It fades slightly but clings to the outside of the glass and remains throughout the drink.
Smell: Cherries and citrus dominate. Some apple as well. Smells like a wine, very robust, makes my mouth water.
Taste: Sour, very sour, plenty of tart cherries, green apples as well. Alcohol comes through in the middle. The oak comes out really strong as well with the tannin. Again, makes my mouth water, the flavors are so strong. Also has a pucker effect.
Mouthfeel: Medium body with a medium to high carbonation. The sourness and the tannin remind me of a chardonnay, and leave me with a dry finish in my mouth. I am not crazy about that dry finish.
Overall: The tannin and sourness mellow as the drink warms a little, which I like. The sourness really wakes up the palate, which I also like. I could have a couple of these a night. The flavors are bold and delicious. Just flat out different, tasty, and I want more.

Pours a thin pinkish red with lively carbonation and a beautiful spiderweb of lacing. Reminds me of a sangria, especially with its murky dark fruit coloration and slightly lighter build.
Smells of tart cherry, light musk and tropical fruit. It's pleasant, but surprisingly light on the standard sour and horse blankety aromas.
Taste has a bold tartness, with a very pronounced, Bretty finale. Cherry and mixed berry make up the fruit components, while the complex and subtle wood-barrel notes add a nice earthiness. The barreling also tempers the tartness, making for a masterful brew that allows all of the elements to shine on their own terms.
The beautiful tart smack also tingles the roof of the mouth, allowing the winey sweetness to resonate and linger. The balancing act is a profund one and I wouldn't expect anything less from Russian River.
The ABV even feels elegantly understated, allowing for a sippable, but endlessly dynamic ale.

Beer received in trade courtesy of khumbard- thanks for a great trade!
A: beer appears a hazy dark orangeish/red with a thin white head. Leaves sticky lacing and has decent head retention.
S: huge notes of acid and oak up front, tartness from the lactobacillus, notes of funk and brett come through at the end. The brett is nicely balanced with the oak and lactic character. Some notes of cherries and vanilla in there as well.
T: as the beer rushes past all of the taste buds, there is an initial puckering from the acidty while notes of oak, vanilla make an appearance as well. Like the nose, there is a mild brett character mid palate and a nice tart cherry finish. The finish leaves the palate begging for more. Very well balanced sour!
MF: high carbonation, light body, crisp and refreshing
D: this is an all around great sour.. you have the nice big puckering qualities paired perfectly with cherries and just enough brett to really keep things interesting.

Presentation: Simultaneously unassuming/impressive-looking 375ml bottle, corked and caged. A HUGE thank-you goes out to hwwty4 for this extremely generous gift. Poured into my late great-grandfather's etched Belgian-style chalice.
Appearance: Under normal light, this beer pours what I would call rose (kind of a mix of ruby/golden tan), but when held up to the light it turns a beautiful bright orangey amber. The cap is ivory and, after receding, leaves a thick, creamy ring and islands of foam floating in the glass. Fairly highly carbonated.
Smell: Tons of fruit and light, elegant funk. Almost delicate aromas. Oddly enough, I'm not really getting cherries, but rather a pleasant mix of fruits. At first I was getting stone fruit (slightly underripe peaches) and maybe a hint of lemon cream. As this warms slightly, I started getting sweet strawberries and now, I think I'm finally getting the sweet/tart candied cherries. No oak present, but there is a hint of something like vanilla cream that's quite nice.
Taste: The cherries come through much stronger in the flavor; tart, slightly underripe, and juicy. There's just a little bit of alcohol present, as well as a dusty, dry, very lightly tannic woodiness. I'm still getting used to sours and so while I really, really like the flavors going on here, it takes me a minute to get past the tart, puckering blast at the beginning. At the beginning, I get hardly anything but tartness and a bit of dry tannin. After a few seconds, however, the tart cherry really begins to come out, and after the swallow, a of other fruity, funky flavors emerge. The cherry character of this reminds me slightly of the bright, natural sweet/tart character of New Glarus' Wisconsin Belgian Red, but there's much more going on in this beer, whereas the NG beer is all about the fruit (not that that's a bad thing). Here, the cherry flavors are supported/balanced by a whole lotta funkiness, a touch of alcohol, and some dry oakiness. I don't really get any malty character from this until I'm down near the bottom of the glass (and it's warmed quite a bit) and it's just a ghost of toasted brown malt.
Mouthfeel: Vibrant, fairly highly carbonated, medium-bodied
Drinkability: Good, although sours are (at least not for me) quaffing beers. Still, one glass of this is warming, yet refreshing at the same time. I like!
Conclusion: I'm so glad I finally got to try one of these beers. Again, a huge, HUGE thank you to the guy who hooked me up with this. Between hwwty4 and tolann, I've now gotten to try two of Russian River's most highly-touted beers. Pliny the Elder absolutely blew me away. It was everything I expected and more. This did not have quite the same effect, but it was still quite enjoyable. The aromas are absolutely out of this world. One of the best wild brews I've encountered. The flavors are very nice here as well. The sourness here wasn't a problem for me; it was lightly puckering and just about right IMO. The flavors were very nice. If I could change one thing it would be to just ratchet the woodsy dryness back a bit.

375ml corked and caged bottle slowly poured into a tulip. Batch 005X3.
A: Pours a hazy ruby brown with a small foamy off-white head that dissipates pretty quickly, leaving behind minimal lacing.
S: Sour apples seem to be dominant here, with hits of cherries, olive, vinegar and oak. Pretty dynamic and appealing.
T: Taste really corresponds well with the smell. Tart, acidic sour apple cider, sour cherries, puckering green olives (don't know if this is normal, but I'm picking up on a good bit of it), and a semisweet oakiness that takes some effort to find. One of the most complex beers that I've ever had.
M: Amazing mouthfeel. The high level of carbonation really makes this come alive as you let it roll around on your tongue. Succinct waves of its complexity reveal themselves in a way that is surprising with each sip, retreating to a dry, biting finish. This was really a pleasure to try.
D: Overall, this is very drinkable, and if the sour complexity didn't grab the attention so well, 375ml would be gone very quickly. While it's not a "big beer," this is certainly one to nurse; the more time you spend with it, the more you get out of it (or at least that was my experience). This is certainly one to seek out.

Into Southern Tier elongated tulip
A: Poured slowly, no yeast. Brilliant clear amber with a fluffy off white head. Incredible carbonation surging up from the bottom. Like champagne.
S: Brett funk, berries. Sour grapes, tart apples.
T: Tart up front, dark fruit, sour cherries. It's a delight to drink, and the sour pronounces a bit more as it warms.
F: Light and fizzy. Carbonation dances on the tongue.
D: What alcohol? It has about as much burn as an apple cider. Could have done a magnum of this in a sitting.

Cherry brown body, capped by a slim bone white cap. Retention is rather unimpressive, slim head soon becomes a lasting ring. Lacing is surprising especially considering the lack of head.
Slightly acidic tartness coupled with candied cherries ooze from the snifter. Brown malt base provides a sturdy platform for the funky cherry aromas to build off of. Musty rustic smells build with warmth
Biting tartness and sour cherry flavor is puckering up front. Toasted brown malt and subtle chocolate evolves midpalate. Hints of oakiness barely noticeable but pleasant through out.
Light and crisp body with lively carbonation. Dry finish though the combination of sweet and tart cherries linger on the tongue.
Supplication is an absolutely outstanding beer. The balance between tart and sweet, complex and approachable is ridiculous. Drinkablility is amazing, though I say that one bottle would be the perfect serving I am certainly wishing I had another bottle.

The flavor changes significantly with age. The taste resembles more of a Flanders Red. Puckeringly sour cherry upfront with notes of vinegar. What is lost in complexity is gain in intensity. Still an awesome beer.

Looks nice. Not as striking as Cons. nor as beguiling as Tempt.
Smells like a theoretical cross betwen those two. Animal notes. Pronounced vinous influences. Barrel (wine barrel) aromas. Similar to being in a winery.
Tastes like... Sour. Of course. But little else. Strong richness to help, but only hints of fruit and little real character.
Mouthfeel is excellent. Crisp, refreshing. Carries the strong flavors through the palate for maximum effetc, but sadly lacks some of the nuance of its brethren.
Drinkability suffers because it doesn't beg for more consumption. Great as a few ounce pour. After that, it gets burdensome.

First sour ever so lets see what these are all about.
A:pours a burnt orange color with an appealing amount of cloudiness. The head is bubbly lace in the shade buttermilk. Its leaving nice thick lace sheets comprised of foamy bubbles. The top of the head is smooth and frothy looking
S:gobs and gobs of sour cherries and yeasty funk. No booze present in the smell but its almost like brandy soaked cherries. Very sweet smelling and I cant really pick out a ton of brett but it is apparent.
T: WOW. I have heard sours were interesting and that in no way could describe this beer. No amount of words could ever describe this much flavor. First a TON of sour, all different types. mainly cherries but there is a reminiscence of other fruits as well like apples but its mostly a berry sourness. There is a sweet flash almost as things shift from sour to smooth. No off flavors to be found or any alcohol. The aging has done amazing for this beer as all the types of yeast now work as one smooth complex flavor that melds perfectly with the sour from the cherries. The finish is clean and smooth with no aftertaste. I am very impressed.
M:Carbonation is almost the the level of champagne but it fits this style perfectly. Lots of bubbles keep things moving along nicely. Its very nice although im not really sure what the mouthfeel is supposed to be on these or how difficult it is to attain but there is for sure nothing wrong with it.
D: This is great beer. By all accounts this beer is delicious. I cant imagine having a lower quality version. The sourness does take a little getting used to after the initial sip but its all world class from there.

375ml Cork and Caged bottle into a snifter.
A- Pours a real dark orangish brown with loads of carbonation!! First beer i've ever poured that fizzed. Huge 2 finger white head that's not going anywhere and LLAB!
S- Real strong champagne and cherries up front with a nice sour apple note in the background and pale malts.
T- Strong cherry sourness up front that fills up your mouth and leaves it bitter and dry. Also some really nice champagne flavors that give it a nice carbonated fullness and sweetness as well. Definitely some yeast in there as well as some nice pinot noir flavors coming through as well.
M- Sour, tart, and bubbly. Medium body with a perfect amount of carbonation that really tickles the tongue and leaves a nice dried up finish in your mouth.

Been excited to try this for a while, Batch 5.
Poured a light brown color with a little bit of off-white head. Nose is pretty pungent, with the cherries really coming through, some tartness, and big funky/musty notes which I really like. Taste follows through similarly--it's not as tart as I might expect, but the funky oaky musty nature of this is really really great. Very enjoyable. Only thing I might hope for is for the cherries to shine through a bit more on the palate (for some reason I'm not getting big cherry flavor). A very well-rounded sour flavor. MF is pretty big for a sour, pillowy, well-carbonated, drying on the finish with some tannins. Very drinkable, I'm sad that it's gone.
Another great beer from RR. When compared to Temptation, I feel that this is a less interesting but potentially more quality brew. Very very good, though again, I'm not sure if it was worth the $17 price tag (for a 375 mL). At half that price it might be the beer I buy exclusively.

A little treat after hitting 2500 miles on my bike today; 500 more than my goal early this spring.
A- A ruby brown with a big head and incredible lacing. Looks very nice.
S- Sour apples, cherries, barnyard and a little mustiness
T- Sour, tart, with cherries, some sweetness, funk and barnyard then sour green crab apples coupled with a dry finish.
M- Nice lively carbonation, tart and sour on the finish, very smooth on the palate and dry.
D- A world class American Wild that will become if it is not the bench mark for all American Wilds with Fruit produced on a yearly basis. A fantastic beer.

Batch 005x4 -- poured a vivid, ruby-tinged rust into a tulip with a thin film of tight white head. Powerful aroma of cherries, leather, grape, and spicy Belgian yeast.
Slightly high carbonation and a light, dry, champagne-like mouthfeel. Intense cherry up front that begins with a tinge of sweetness before the puckering sour apple tartness sets in. Wine-like notes of oak and alcohol warmth emerge before the slightly bitter and funky finish.
Absolutely delicious, as was to be expected. I splurged and tried this and Russian River's Temptation over the course of a weekend, and while I preferred the subtleties of Temptation just a bit more, Supplication bowls you over with bold and complex flavors that are worth the price of admission.

Bought a bottle and poured into a tulip glass.
My first time pouring bottled beer into a glass but I think I got it to have a decent amount of head and it opened up to some pleasant cider aromas and cherry and malt, the alcohol is also surprisingly apparent on the nose. I was expecting a really bracingly tart beer having had my fair share of berlinner-weissbiers but this was surprisingly toned and balanced. The heaviness of the alcohol goes well to balance out the tartness of the souring bacteria. cherry and yeast are noticeable but are all welcome and quite gorgeously done. For a brett beer I detected no barnyard funk or anything like that, it was just beautifully pleasant and earthy. The aging in pinot barrels brings out some trace wine-like flavors. This really is a beautiful beer, it's not bracingly sour as I was expecting but it's so balanced between sour, and the alcohol and just everything it truly is a wonderful beer.

Pours a cloudy walnut brown with reddish hues and a thin off white head that does manage stick around for some time before leaving a thin layer of lacing.
Quite a unique aroma consisting of funky yeast, cherries, pepper-like spice, hints of oak, and vinous grape from the noir.
Sour flavor up front with cherries and grapes, followed by yeast, only faint hints of the oak, and a tart finish.
Medium to light in body with generous carbonation, crisp yet tart, and a bit acidic.
This is an amazing blend of flavors and aromas, but not so dominant that it affects how easy it is too drink. Great beer!

375ml corked & caged bottle poured into a hill farmstead wine glass Batch 003.
Pours a hazy light brown/dark amber with a small white head that's quite thin with little to no lacing. Nose is tart, funky, and very sharp - a bit of vinegar finishes it off.
Taste is very tart and funky, pretty mouth-puckering and slightly fruity although it's not overtly sweet. There's almost no barnyard funk to it which makes it a bit more drinkable. Very dry and fairly crisp finish. Very good beer.

A: Dense, small off white head with a cloudy, yeasty orange/brown body.
S: Intense sour aroma or apples, cherries and barnyard.
T: Black cherry warheads tart is the main flavor I get. Very intense. There's also a vinegary spiciness.
M: Very nice mild carbonation. Medium body, and the sour lends a nice edge.
D: Great drinkability for a sour.

Presentation: 375 mL corked and caged bottle labelled with Batch Number 005X4. Poured into a snifter glass at room temperature.
Appearance: Ruby red with a hint of light brown in color. Pours a really large fizzy head that recedes pretty quickly into nothing.
Aroma: Tart cherries, pinot noir, vinegar, and some nice funk. The aroma really does just fill the room after opening this. Really balanced and complex. The tart cherries are probably the biggest note in the aroma, but all the other notes are definitely present and contributing to teh aroma.
Taste: Really tart cherries stand out upfront. The sourness definitely is the first thing you notice. After the initial blast of sour, the pinot noir, vinegar, and barnyard funk really start to stand out. All some together really nicely. A puckering finish.
Mouthfeel: Light bodied and with a lot fo carbonation. Very crisp. Also very acidic.
Drinkability: I wanted more than the one bottle after finishing. The alcohol was not overpowering at all, but definitely was warming.
Overall, the single best American wild ale I've ever had. Extremely complex and flavorful. All the elements work perfectly together and don't overpower. My highest recommendation.

Opened this a couple weeks ago to celebrate a weekend of moving. Big thanks to Scottfrie to this wonderful beer.
A- Nice big pop from the cork opening this bottle. Poured nice light brown with good size head to it.
S- Lots of cherry notes to this aroma. Very small hints from the oak aging.
T- Very interesting first sip. The tartness isn't overbearing but allows you to enjoy each drink. The sour cherries were just right and gave a good taste amazingly.
M- Nice tart, crisp, almost a little dry. Medium body with lots of carbonation.
T- Was very excited to try my first wild ale and it didn't let me down. Thought maybe it would be a little to much, but it had great balance and good taste. The acidity to the beer probably would stop me from another bottle that night, but would drink another one anytime.

Over the past year, I've had this beer probably six times at the least. Every time I do, I hearken back to a day at O'Brien's Pub in San Diego when a couple of my friends and I were at their Russian River day. We had two goblets of Supplication, a pint of Pliny, and starting to feel the alcohol, we picked up a Beatification. Then, in a moment of stupidity or brilliance (or perhaps both) we decided to drop the $95 bucks and buy the 3 liter Batch 2 Supplication. It was epic, and the bottle crowns my bottle collection. A day I'll never forget.
Anyway, about the beer:
Appearance: Nothing particularly remarkable here. Hazy-red brown brew with an almost oddly white head that laces lightly. The carbonation is mild, and not too much in the way of clingy foam.
Smell: Whew, there's that Russian River tartness. Big sour notes of cherry, oaky wine, leathery and bretty funk, and just general tartness. The pucker is on!
Taste: Man, this is what a cherry sour should be. The Pinot barrels really add the oak-wine quality that just pairs perfectly with the tart cherry and sweet-sour combo that Russian River always seems to do to perfection. Puckering and dry on the back end, finishing with the tart cherry as the lasting flavor. Taste continues to evolve as she goes along, providing a steadily sour, funky, cherry goodness from first drop to the last. Just delicious.
Mouthfeel: Tart, dry, and sour. Nothing too acidic or astringent, which is appreciated. Sometimes I wish it slightly less dry, but still very good.
Driinkability: I have had this beer a half-dozen times now, and it's still ringing true as one of the better Wild Ales of its kind. I have had over a liter and a half of this beer in a sitting, and I am positive I'll never do that again for several reasons, namely my digestive tract. That being said, the beer was so fantastic it was very tasty to the last drop. Sure, I tend to like the citrusy sours slightly more, but this beer is nothing short of outstanding.

Supplication comes in a pricey little 375 mL bottle. (I think I paid $12.00?) The bottle looks neat though, with a long, bulged neck like a miniature version of it's 750 mL big brothers. Corked and caged. Served at 47°F.
A: Uncorked, revealing a swirling mist in the bottle. Pours into my NB goblet a cloudy, light copper, peachy brown, that's too dark for an amber but lighter than a typical brown. A creamy, one-finger sandstone head emerges, with just a tinge of pink.
S: Sour cherries, which undoubtedly had been eagerly anticipating uncorking, fill the room before the pour. This brew is almost overwhelmingly sour and complex. The nose is packed with vinegar, as well as clove, cinnamon, Morello cherries, and a slight, salty, barnyard funk. Overall the smell is an intense sour acid with accents of warm, herbal Christmas notes. The background spice is phenolic and slightly solventy.
T: The taste is predominantly dry, woody, and tart. It's very complex, but it's a well past center on the sour scale, so it's hard for me to decide if I love it or not. The carbonation and sourness hit first, but then a solventy hotness follows. The flavor also finishes with more fresh-cut oak and vanilla than any other sour I've tasted.
M: This wild is highly carbonated, so the effervescence foams in the throat and causes major burpage. The bubbles from the foam nucleate and explode in the mouth, but the cream makes the bursting bubbles and ensuing foam stick to your mouth and throat. There is also enough sourness to bring on some puckering and pangs in the jaw.
D: I would say drinkability is severely limited on cost alone, but as far as the beer itself goes, the real factor is your appreciation of very sour beers. I tend to avoid more acidic beer styles like Flanders Red, but I would consider this to be right at my limit for sourness. Medium.
