While in CA do as the Californians do... Stocked up on some Russian River brews on my first night in town. Big fan of PtE (but who isn't). The Pliny that I picked up from Whole Foods was only 4 days old where as the Blind Pig was bottled in late July.
A - Pours a nice golden yellow. Decent head, decent retention, keeps a nice lacing around the top of the glass throughout the life of the beer.
S - Smells like it's been barrel aged. Less pine than Pliny and more of an alcohol scent.
T - The alcohol comes through in the taste. It doesn't taste bad but I'd definitely choose Pliny over Blind Pig.
D - Goes down smooth. Warms the inside. Another well done brew from Russian River.
M - A little thin, but very good.
It's possible that the 2 months that this beer was sitting on the shelf in Whole Foods has affected it slightly, but I'd still choose a PtE any day :-)
