A - A rich-orange-yellow color that is gloriously hazy and raw looking. You can see sediment floating around in the glass. Head is bright white and laces spectacularly well. Everything about this beer is bright and beautiful looking.

S - Clean hops, bread, citrus, molasses malt, some spice. Really pure aroma. A bit light.

T - Wow. This is my first encounter with a Russian River beer and I already understand what people are talking about. This is spectacular. Tastes like light pine and there's just some faint citrus and a little coriander maybe. Apricot in there, too. What really stands out about this beer is how crisp it is...This tastes like it came from a paradise that doesn't know pollution. This is so unbelievably clean and pristine tasting. I'm blown away by how truly unique this is.

M - Unbelievable. No other beer I've ever tasted touches how perfect the mouthfeel is for what kind of beer it's trying to be. The guys at RRBC really know what they're doing here. Pretty thick, but it's still light and airy in the way a steam beer is airy. Carbonation is medium and perfectly appropriate. A very dry afterbite that is so utterly crisp. The hops bite in a place in my mouth that I've never experienced before. Really unique.

D - This is one hell of a beer. I think this brew is probably underrated because people will always consider it side by side with the Plinys and RRB's fantastic Wild Ales. This is a fantastic beer in every sense of the word. Extraordinary. I hope I can get my hands on this again. This is truly great.

A- orange tinge with exceptional carbonation

T- very well balanced and hopped with a nice citrus perhaps even tropical appeal to the flavor. the hop flavor is floral at the end and doesnt linger or coat the palate excessivly

S- sweet and citus notes that are enticing and complement that flavor profile

M- rounded and smooth followed by a slight bite that blends nicely

overall an amazing ipa that isnt too strong, maybe a similar style with a little maltiness wwould be nice but i can appreciate this beer all around, i will be buying more tomorrow!

A- Great goldish and orangeish color, beautiful color, Russian River always seem to get the color down perfectly. Beautiful color for an IPA. Pretty solid fluffy white head, great looking.

S- Smell is amazing, citrus, floral hops, one of the best smells for a single IPA. Definitely top tier IPA without a doubt. Smell is similar in that to PtE, but yet it is only a single.

T- Taste is perfect, very herbal and citrusy, but great IPA notes, great balance of hops and malt, perfectly balanced.

M- Smooth mouthfeel, very full and not lacking anything. A+

O- The best single IPA I think I have had to date. Another solid Russian River brew.

Received a bottle from bbothen in my first beer trade. 24oz. brown bottle with a Burnt Sienna label featuring the "Blind Pig" logo and text written in Comic Sans typeface.

Pours a pale golden yellow and an awesome three-fingered fluffy white head and some chunky lacing.

I haven't had a Russian River beer since I left San Diego 3 years ago. One whiff of this brew and I am instantly transported to O'Brien's pub where I'd drink Pliny regularly.

Huge hop aroma, musty, pungent blue cheese, some citrus but mostly pine needles and cat piss.

Medium bodies with a creamy mouthfeel and slick texture.

Light, pale malt sweetness up front but lets face it, this beer s a hop grenade! Tons of lush, citrus hop flavor, herbal and grassy as all hell. Really it's ridiculous how mush hop aroma and flavor is crammed into this bottle. The brew finishes extremely piny with a dry bitterness like fresh unsweetened grapefruit. Despite huge amount of hops this beer is extremely drinkable, crisp, and quite frankly thirst quenching.

Awesome IPA, if I could get this beer regularly its all I would drink! Breweries on the East Coast need to take note and start brewing IPAs like this. Big thanks to bbothen for the trade!

L: Pours orange tinted gold under a fairly persistent clingy 2” white foam cap.
S: Starts floral and then citrusy grapefruit.
T: Hop forward beer progressing through light fruit, light malt, light biscuit, long lingering citrus rind bitterness moderated and balanced by a light malt and fruit sweetness but overall it dries out in the finish. Hop flavors are above average, hop bitterness is moderates.
F: Creamy, medium body, medium carbonation.
O: A big IPA with complex layers of flavor and a delight to drink.

RR knows their IPA's and this one is done just as well as thier flaghip Pliny. Very smooth and easy drinking. Coppery coloring, fresh hops with both citrus and pine. Excited to dive into the 6 pack I just got from RR.

Poured 500mL bottle into my 21oz snifter with a bottled on date of April 16, 2010 (3 weeks old!!!). I love the Russian River 500mL bottles because they fit perfectly into my snifters with enough room for the head to show itself off.

A - Poured a nice golden yellow color with a solid 2 finger white to off white head that stuck around for a bit but dissipated into a speckled covering with the solid ring around the edges that gives off nice lacing all the way down. Nice tiny carbonation bubbles rise from the bottom throughout.

S - Grapefruit, grapefruit and more grapefruit followed by a bit of orangey/less invasive citrus. A bit of sweetness in the end.

T - I got a boner. This gives Pliny a run for it's money. Nice grapefruit bitterness up front that is complemented nicely with some sweetness. Not overwhelmingly bitter at all and very refreshing. My wife, who hates IPAs, took a sip and said, "I think that I could drink that, it tastes like grapefruit juice."

M - Wow. It is a nice crisp beer that should be the standard for IPAs. A bit sticky but it doesn't leave that coating that DIPAs tend to leave behind but this is not a DIPA so it's right on spot. Very clean as well.

D - Extremely drinkable. I could see drinking this all day on a nice hot summer day sitting on the back deck enjoying life.

Found this on tap at Hollingshead's Delicatessen - The appearance was very cloudy but the bartender just changed the keg and I got the first pour. Talk about FRESH this beer was like I died and gone to Heaven. Big fruity burst of Peaches and melon. The mouthfeel was very silky and thick like a beer milkshake! The drinkabilty was off the chart. I had a roastbeef and blu cheese sandwich that went pretty well with this tasy IPA.

A - Golden with orange tints, slightly hazy but much clearer than I was expecting, 2 fingers of foamy head the remains for a while and then settles into sticky lacing.

S - Resiny hops, pine, very herbal with some citrus zest. Nice caramel malt balance.

T - Pine and grapefruit, very herbal, citrus zest followed by sweet caramel malt and a lingering piney, herbal finish.

M - Light to medium and silky smooth. This one goes down way too easy. A dry linger hop finish.

D - Packed with hops but still very drinkable and well balanced in the sense I could have several. Reminds me of a smaller version of the Pliny's.

On tap at Falling Rock in Denver.

Blind Pig is an absolutely delicious IPA: golden/amber, with moderate carbonation and excellent (thin) head retention. Huge earthy/piney/herbal hop aromas and a full wallop of hop flavor. The bitterness is well balanced with a smooth malty finish, and it is hop flavor that lingers. Very light alcohol warming, which suggests its kinship with the Pliny beers. It is shockingly refreshing and easy to drink given the strength and style.

I like that this is an IPA where hop flavor is really the showcase. The malts are nicely used to restrain it from being too hop-heavy, but still, this is a hop lover's IPA.

Pours a hazy light orange and a white, 1 finger head, okay retention and a beautiful sheet of lacing. Aroma is a good blend of tropical fruits-pineapple, grapefruit, sweet melon and more floral hops and a light pine and grass edge, only a hint of malt-light and biscuity. Wonderful, intoxicating, not overwhelmingly so-very inviting.

Flavor delivers on the promise of the nose. Oranges, pineapple-not a whole lot on the grapefruit front-but it is rough and jagged on the mouth, only it is not so pithy. Instead, the pine and grass hop flavors take over, blending perfectly with the citric flavors. Somewhat lacking in the mid-palate for a malt presence, but the light, biscuit malt is pleasant nonetheless. Mouthfeel is incredibly light, almost airy with light carbonation.

Infinitely drinkable, I wish this was available on tap in Wisconsin, instead I know exactly what I'll drink whenever I visit California. Despite Blind Pig's weak malt presence, I'm judging it according to the West Coast style of American IPA, in which case, this a flawless IPA. Some may like a maltier IPA (I know I do sometimes), but you'd be hard pressed to find its equal, let alone a superior IPA. Highly recommended, a must.

Reviewing the Blind Pig IPA from Russian River Brewing Company, creators of Pliny the Elder. Blind Pig is their single IPA. Beer Advocate's composite rankings place Blind Pig as a top 10 single IPA. Thank you BeerAdvocate user LieutenantSours for hooking me up with this one!

Score: 97

Bottled 11/22/11, served in a St. Bernardus Watou snifter glass, and enjoyed 01/10/12.

Appearance: Blind Pig pours a "bright" and transparent orange color that is lighter than Pliny, if memory serves, with one finger of foamy white head that quickly settles into a ring around the glass. Excellent lacing. 5/5

Smell: Oranges, lemon, grapefruit, and other tropical citrus flavors. There is a strong grainy malt character in the aroma that comes off as creamy, sweet and smooth. Lots of pine and freshly cut grass hoppiness characters too. 4.5/5

Taste: Bright grapefruit, oranges and acidic citrus mixed with piney hops bitterness. Smooth grainy malt flavor builds on the mid-palate and in the finish as the beer layers. A high amount of prickly carbonation makes the bitterness really "pop" on the tongue. Finish is piney, hoppy, and quite bitter with a lingering citrus sweetness. Honestly, this one is on par with Pliny in my book. 5/5

Mouthfeel: My first impression is that this beer is a little lighter and has much more carbonation than Pliny, which is certainly not a bad thing. I tend to prefer my IPAs on the more carbonated side because it makes the hop characteristics really "pop" and "fizzle" on the tongue. Good carbonation makes a zesty IPA really come to life. Blind Pig is medium-light bodied with medium-high carbonation. Finish is bitter and dry, though not as dry as Pliny was. 4.5/5

Overall: Cheap, delicious and accessible. Russian River really knows how to brew this style of beer well.

Recommendation: An absolute must try IPA.

Pairings: Hamburgers or falafel? Could mix well with a spicy Mexican dish.

Cost: $6.99 for a 500 ml bottle

WOW! Best IPA I have ever had. Went to Libations for the first time and had to pick this up. $5 can't beat it. Poured into a pint glass and was not disappointed. The color was a beautiful golden honey with a perfect 3/4 inch white head. Carbonation slowly spewing from a geyser at the bottom of the glass. The smell was amazing, strong notes of citrus with a small amount of wood (pine). Taste was GREAT, Strong citrus( grapefruit and tangerine) with a bitterness that beautifully lingers.
As far as drinkability.... I wanted a few more. Great beer.

Russian River Brewing Company - Blind Pig IPA

Got this from a trade with a friend, had already had Pliny but wanted this as well, in fact I am always looking to try stuff from Russian River because they are a phenomenal brewery!

Look - Pours a clear filtered (I call it West Coast Style now, little joke) copper amber with a small fizzy head that dissipates quickly. Abundant sticky lacing. Great looking brew.

Smell - Some sweet, almost a deep amber-type caramel malt with a smooth pine/resin and slight citrus hop overlay. Mouth-watering.

Taste - Smooth snappy crisp malt with fresh but sweeter and chewier hops than is typically seen, quite unique! Both the hops and malts are slightly bready.

Mouthfeel - Insanely smooth, not at all boozy. Not overly sticky but also not overly dry, right in the middle, phenomenal! Perfect blend and carbonation.

Overall - This is a gem, I thought this was amazing, smooth, and just sweet enough and it was a great representation of this style. This is the perfect example of what I love about these West Coast brews and Russian River in general.

I was able to grab 4 bottles of this while visiting San Diego and this is the last one. All were bottled 090613. The first 2 we drank a week after bottling. Outstanding!

Poured into a dogfish head IPA glass. Golden in color with a pillowy white head that lingers beautifully.

Still plenty of citrus, grapefruit and juicy fruit in the nose. Slight bit of pineapple.

The taste is absolutely spectacular. Hops up front and hops in the background with just a slight hint of biscuit and straw. So clean and refreshing. I'm not sure it gets better than this.

Lingering hop bitterness with a medium mouthfeel. Just amazing.

Blind Pig IPA pours a beautiful golden color with a rapidly receding quarter inch foam head. The bottle I am reviewing is fresh and purchased at the brewery.

The appearance is nearly perfect for a hot summer Florida day. Golden, clear, and appetizing. The quarter inch foam head disappeared quickly. My tulip shaped beer glass compliments it perfectly.

The smell is dynamite and full of hints of citrus and pine. It is a very hoppy beer and I detect a little lemon as well.

The taste is right up my alley... very bitter early on and persists until the next swig. The crispness is terrific. The bitterness then lingers on the back of the tongue like a good memory.

The mouthfeel is thin and consists of moderate carbonation and mild alcoholic notes.

Overall I love this beer. If you likey hoppy crisp beers then this is one to try.

Pours a nice, light golden honey color with a decent white head that laces the glass.
Citrus and wood, mostly pine with a good bit of oak to balance and a bit of malty sweetness.
The taste is almost perfect. Big hop flavor and not-quite-puckering hop bitterness overwhelm on the first wave, but the finish has a nice oaky mellowness to it that doesn't quite add anything so much as just smooth it all out on the grapefruity hop fade.
Feels smooth, yet very sufficiently carbonated. A pleasure to hold in ones mouth...
I could drink this all day, if I didn't have to get it in the mail. One of my favorite IPAs of all time.

500 mL bottle with a bottled on date of 090710 courtesy of bmwfan1987, thanks Curt! Pours a mostly clear, light gold color with a tight-bubbled off-white head. Pretty good retention and excellent lacing. As expected, a fine looking ale here.

Quite a nice blast of piney and citric hop aromas. Very fresh and fruity, tropical even. Malts are a faint background and let the hops do all the talking. I am enjoying sniffing this every bit as much as a Pliny, maybe even more so.

Excellent range of hop flavors melding into a bitter, but not abrasive, clean finish. I would be seriously surprised if any more hop flavor could be enjoyably packed into a beer. Juicy, resinous, flowery, ganja-esque lupulin madness! Yup, this is one fine IPA. Malts are mild mannered and grainy with a light kiss of sweetness. This could really be an APA just as easily as an IPA. Mouthfeel is silky smooth and lowish-ly carbonated, makes for fast drinking. Goes down very easy...right up there with Sculpin for best IPA I have had.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ in Seal Beach CA.

A: Poured a beautiful crystal clear golden orange. Has a nice one finger frothy white head. Leaves a beautiful lattice lacing.

S: Smells similar to Pliny. Makes you just want to dive in and bathe in it. Smells of citrus and pine. Lots of hop resin.

T: Perfectly balanced IPA. The hops and malt pair perfectly. There is a nice earthy floral start to the hop bitterness that transitions into a citrus and pine finish. A subtle malty sweetness rounds it out.

M: It has a very nice creaminess with an excellent crisp finish. Mild carbonation.

O: Another stellar beer from RR. A really enjoyable IPA. Perfectly balanced, yet extremely complex hop profile. Get this one fresh on tap and you will be blown away.

Sampled during Stone's 11th Anniversary event.

Straw yellow color, good head retention and lacing.

Big hop aroma--chewy citrus smells of lime, lemons, grapefruit, bitter orange peel.

Taste--Hops again, grapefuit, lemons, caramel malt A great IPA, bitter and refreshing (so far one of my top IPA's I have tasted).

Mouthfeel- Hops attacking my taste buds but I don't care! Good carbonation.

Drinkability? Yes, I have the ability to drink some more. Goes down great with some Arrogant Almonds!

A-dark transparent honey with a thin white head

S-smells like pine, grapefruit, and salty. good strength

T-comes in with a good crisp taste of grapefruit. goes in to a decent taste of piney hops. the tastes aren't overly powerful but they're nice and crisp. it has a nice after-taste of grapefruit

M-creamy medium carbonation with a nice creamy finish

O-its definitely an amazing IPA. it compares to the Elder, though I think the Elder happens to be slightly more robust, but only by a touch. its very well balanced, near perfect for an IPA.
