Reviewing the Blind Pig IPA from Russian River Brewing Company, creators of Pliny the Elder. Blind Pig is their single IPA. Beer Advocate's composite rankings place Blind Pig as a top 10 single IPA. Thank you BeerAdvocate user LieutenantSours for hooking me up with this one!

Score: 97

Bottled 11/22/11, served in a St. Bernardus Watou snifter glass, and enjoyed 01/10/12.

Appearance: Blind Pig pours a "bright" and transparent orange color that is lighter than Pliny, if memory serves, with one finger of foamy white head that quickly settles into a ring around the glass. Excellent lacing. 5/5

Smell: Oranges, lemon, grapefruit, and other tropical citrus flavors. There is a strong grainy malt character in the aroma that comes off as creamy, sweet and smooth. Lots of pine and freshly cut grass hoppiness characters too. 4.5/5

Taste: Bright grapefruit, oranges and acidic citrus mixed with piney hops bitterness. Smooth grainy malt flavor builds on the mid-palate and in the finish as the beer layers. A high amount of prickly carbonation makes the bitterness really "pop" on the tongue. Finish is piney, hoppy, and quite bitter with a lingering citrus sweetness. Honestly, this one is on par with Pliny in my book. 5/5

Mouthfeel: My first impression is that this beer is a little lighter and has much more carbonation than Pliny, which is certainly not a bad thing. I tend to prefer my IPAs on the more carbonated side because it makes the hop characteristics really "pop" and "fizzle" on the tongue. Good carbonation makes a zesty IPA really come to life. Blind Pig is medium-light bodied with medium-high carbonation. Finish is bitter and dry, though not as dry as Pliny was. 4.5/5

Overall: Cheap, delicious and accessible. Russian River really knows how to brew this style of beer well.

Recommendation: An absolute must try IPA.

Pairings: Hamburgers or falafel? Could mix well with a spicy Mexican dish.

Cost: $6.99 for a 500 ml bottle

16.9oz bottle to pint glass, bottled on 11/22/11, drank 1/6/12.

A: Pours a 2 finger dull white, foam head that leaves lacing after a few minutes. Beer is light gold in appearance.

S: A sweetish smell, with lots of citrus hops coming through, grapefruit.

T: This is a tasty beer. Surprisingly light in flavor on the palate to start with tart citrus flavors rounding out the taste, grapefruit as others have mentioned, that linger after finishing.

M: As stated above, this is a very light IPA with a healthy amount of carbonation.

O: This is a great IPA, very refreshing that would be a great summertime or warm weather IPA. I wish I had more!

A - Pours a clear golden color with just a fingers worth of head that dissipates. Light lacing on the glass. Good, refreshing looking beer.

A - Really nice pine and floral notes with a hint of citrus . It has an almost organic smelling malt backbone like hay. Some sweet malt and biscuit notes.

T - Starts with just a slight sweetness that amediately takes a back seat to an extreme hop bitterness. The flavor duration is long with the bitterness lingering throughout. Very drinkable and refreshing.

M - Light to medium in body. Tart and mouth watering. Extremely dry finish.

O - Really great beer, wish I had easier access to this one.

Courtesy of IrishColonial. Thanks Eric!

A. Pours a slightly hazy goldenrod. Half finger eggshell white head, nice and crisp. Good lacing and retention.

S. Wow, this is one of the best smelling IPAs I have ever had. Could be the first named tropical storm of the season, as the pineapple and mango flavors keep on coming. I detect a good amount of orange, peach, and just a hint of bitter resin. The bouquet on this is first rate. Amazing.

T. Not nearly as smooth as the nose indicates. Gone are the tropical notes and instead it is just a massively bitter, pinecone infused hop bomb. Some grainy malts. Kind of a thin finish. A bit one note.

M. Bitterness dominates, but it's too thin. Where are the malts? Where is the more rounded hop profile? Exceptionally drying. Too bad.

O. I remember having this 9 months ago and I thought it was better than Pliny. This bottle is less than a month old, so it is as fresh as it gets. And it is extremely disappointing. The malt profile on this is awfully thin and what you are left with is a thin, watery bite. Not even close to a great IPA.

What a lovely IPA, one that often gets overlooked because of its bigger brother, the infamous Pliny. I wish we could get a straight-up IPA of this quality consistently in NY and NJ.

This bottle was extremely fresh, a mere 6 days old, and poured crystal clear and light gold in color. Smallish creamy head that falls slowly, excellent lacing up and down the sides of the glass. Lots of tropical fruit in the nose, mainly pineapple with grapefruit, lemon and orange behind it; nicely resinous. Powerfully hoppy with an aroma noticed from 3 feet away.

Tremendous fresh hop taste with tons of tropical fruit esters, again mostly pineapple and grapefruit, very slight sweet malt presence underneath but it’s extremely subdued. Tons of citrus with more orange and lemony notes as well. Good bitterness that lingers into the finish.

The mouthfeel is also perfect, lightly creamy and just a touch sticky, medium body with just enough carbonation to give it a little life but not so much that it becomes prickly or bloating. Extremely smooth. Definitely top notch and not to be missed.

Bomber bottled on 11/22/11. Thanks to dsgolovin for this.

A- Pours a beautiful gold with a 1 1/12 finger head. On the lighter end for an IPA. Looks to be nicely carbonated. A fair amount of lacing.

S- Good olfactory notes, but the smell doesn't blow me away. Grapefruit dominates, but I don't detect a whole lot more complexity.

T-Blind Pig tastes better than it smells IMO. Grapefruit hop flavors are present with a tiny bit of pine. Enjoyable.

M- Smooooth. Really, really enjoyable with moderate carbonation and the right amount of residual resin. A highlight of this beer.

O- Blind Pig is a really nice IPA, and a great introduction to Russian River beers. I'm excited to try the Pliny.

bottled 12.19.11, so just about two weeks old. pours a very bright dark gold/light amber color with a white head that leaves good lace. nose is tropical fruit (pineapple grapefruit?) and hints of flowers with a touch of sweet malt backbone. just wonderful. like cutting a pineapple in the middle of a citrus grove. taste is grapefruity and filled with pine, grass and all the proper hop notes. just enough sweetness to round it out, but finishing bitter and fairly dry. medium body that begs to be schwilled. wow. i've always opted for the other "well known" RR brews, and am kicking myself for sleeping on this one. fantastic.
