A-Pours a hazy orange with a nice off white head that laces the glass well.

S-Big big grapefruit combined with a strong pine hop presence. Tropical fruit notes are clear as well. Smells very delicious.

T-Incredibly dry and bitter. Big pine! Much more bitter than I was anticipating. The grapefruit and fruity hops notes are detectable as well. This beer is quite powerful but it is not one sided. Quite complex as well. Don't let the pig on the front fool you. Tongue burning deliciousness.

M-Great mouthfeel. Has the mouthfeel of a IPA but the taste of a DIPA. Slick and nicely carbonated.

D-Very drinkable. Alcohol is masked perfectly. One of the more intense tasting IPAs i've had. Once again, Russian River blows my mind.

500 ml into a russian river chalice

Bottled 9 days ago on 8.10.12

Pours a clear bronze color with a bubbly foam head

Tangerine, grapefruit, and pine in the nose

Refreshing citruses, and pine dominate the flavor. Finishes with just the right ammount of bitterness for an ipa

Definatly a good startee beer if your trying to get someone into ipas. What a perfect example

Got in a trade for some HT. First time having, was blown away to say the least.

A - Light golden straw, similar to Pliny in that regard. Small head and crystal clear pour.

S - Sweet malts, light hops, citrus scents of grapefruit and others. Full bodied scent for sure.

T - Starts with sweet malts, very light hoppyness. Great balance, its amazing really. Bitterness comes at very end, yet still ends with the smooth sweetness.

M - Light to med. body. Smooth across the palate, smooth carbonation as well.

O - Great beer, so smooth, I probably said "smooth" 10 times in this review, but really thats what screams at me. It is crazy drinkable - simply great beer.

Clear orange beer. Nice one finger head. Great retention. Great lacing.

A really nice American hop aroma with a balance of sweet, slightly spicy malt.

The flavor is to die for! Fantastic hop flavor. Citrus, floral, resiny, maybe a little pine. Adequate bitterness. A perfect malt balance. Awesome.

Medium bodied, smooth mouthfeel. Perfect carbonation. Long lasting dry finish.

This IPA is out of this world. Right up there with Pliny. Very west coast American. Definitely drink it fresh.

Poured into a Due South Brewing Co. snifter. Label says Bottled on 010213.

A- Pours a light amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains decently before gradually lightening to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a sheer web-like pattern of surface foam. Very resilient lacing slowly creeps down the glass.

S- An amazingly sweet hop aroma almost smells like orange soda. The malt, although restrained, is a key element in executing this sweetness. Semi-musty but the tropical fruit notes dominate bringing to mind pineapple, lemon and grapefruit juice.

T- The flavor is decidedly less fruity as the aroma at first, but the deliciously grassy/citrusy/bitter combination of tastes is sublime. Blazingly bright hops and some mildly toasty malt in the background conjoin to make an intense, yet very pleasurable drink. Alcohol makes its presence known but stealthily weaves itself into the profile. Bitterness is persistent and welcome. Juicy, vibrant.

M- Very sharp in a great way, bringing a solid bite from the hops but still somehow containing subtlety. Medium carbonation and a lightish body.

O- I think I might like this better than Pliny. Guess I'll just have to drink some more of both to find out. Either way, they're both excellent beers.

1/2 liter stein at Hollingshead's Deli in Orange this afternoon after a long morning

Very excited to see this on tap, first time have seen anywhere

Heard nothing but great things about it and they were all true

Hands down the best IPA I have ever had, yes it is even better than Pliny the Elder

Poured a golden yellow with a monsterous foamy head, almost two inches thick

Nice smell of citrus and faint smokiness

Taste was amazing and very hoppy, hints of pine and cascade spread throughout with a little orange at the end

Great mouthfeel and taste did not go away

Could have sat there for hours and drank this one, especially because it is only six percent alcohol, great session beer even though it is not meant for it

Would have drank another one of these today, but saw another rare draft only beer I had to try as well, greatest two beers in one day I have ever had

It is too bad this a draft only beer because I would buy a case of bottles tomorrow if I could

Yet another reason why Russian River is the best brewery in the world

Highest recommended IPA I have tasted in my beer drinking days

poured from bottle into pint glass. deep golden color with a nice white head. i was instantly hit by an intense mix of serious hops, lemon citrus and pine scents. WOW this beer smells intense.

first taste surprises. with a smell that is so intense one would expect extreme bitter. but its not. yes there is a nice little bite on the back end. but there is an awesome flavor. full flavor. smoooth. but like i said a hint of bite on the tail end. this beer basically drinks itself its so good. if it is this good out of a bottle i cant wait to try it off tap.

Bottle dated 091509, poured into a goblet. Beer is yellow and clear, light amber, head is white and tight, falls away leaving some lacing on the glass. Carbonation is low to moderate.

Aroma is filled with sweet hops. There is some other sweetness in there, maybe some malt, maybe some alcohol. It smells like a great IPA.

Medium body, beer is hoppy hoppy hoppy. There isn't much of an aftertaste that comes from the throat but you can taste the bitterness that has coated your mouth for several seconds after you have finished the beer. Second taste, beer is definitely not dry, but its also not overly wet. There is some nice connectivity between the front and the back of the mouth.

This is a great great IPA.

At my first sip I knew I was drinking something special. This is the beer that came before Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger. The hop character is similar, but less bitter, and the malt is a lot smoother than the elder. At 6% you can session the DIPA! Floral, citrus, and piney aromas destroy the nose as you let the bitterness scrape your taste buds clean and cling to your palate. This can step in Elder's place when he's not around.

Another from shortysdude285. Poured into my mug a less than clear golden color. A very thick white soapy heading. Lacing sticks all around the glass.

Smell is awesome.Hoppy nose quickly followed up by an extremely fruitiness. Pineapples,Mangoes and a nice sugary sweetness to top thing's off maybe a bit of bubblegum as well.

Taste is very slick and smooth. Not as hoppy as thought at first but very tasty with yeasty like fruitiness.A cracker like toastiness right in the middle and finishes with that same candy like fruitiness.

Mouth is smooth and bubbley. Light to medium bodied and a helluva feel in the mouth. Nice sugary mouthfeel with a fruity finish.

An amazing IPA from Russian River one of my new favorites.

Chilled bottle into a glass. It's tough to find this thing fresh anymore, so I was pleased as punch to see a 4/16/10 bottling date.

A: Pours a chill-hazed apricot-gold body with a finger of off-white head. Retention is long enough to release aromatics, then the head vanishes into a fluffy collar and leaves tendrils of lace behind.

S: Holy Citrus Bomb, Batman! Pineapple, lemon, orange, grapefruit. I don't pick up any malt besides a general sweetness in the nose.

T: As above, there's only a general sweetness that suggests a malt backbone; nothing overt. Instead, this is a lupulin showcase from start to finish. I love citrus hop flavors, and this one delivers in spades: pineapple, lemon, grapefruit, orange zest. There's an undercurrent of floral hops as well.

M: Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation. While it has a light lingering bitterness, it's not as oily as other IPAs. For the style, it's very clean.

D: It's too bad this is harder to find fresh than Pliny the Elder. I'll definitely get it again fresh.

A 1/2 liter of this nectar was poured at Hollingshead Deli.

It's a hop-hazy gold with the thick sticky head that mega-hoppy IPAs usually have.

Well, this one is only really about the hops so I guess I'll describe their flavor as best I can. They're big time piney with several varieties of citrus rind and pungent flowers just behind. As it warms more complexities come through (orange flesh, rosemary), but they are quickly scrubbed away by a firm, but not harsh, bitterness. The finish is very dry, which is the trademark characteristic that makes Vinnie's IPAs and DIPAs the World's best.

Hop nirvana. And with the lower ABV it's not unreasonable to a have a few.

Pours a golden honey color, filtered and clear as a bell with a generous two finger soapy white head, lively carbonation, solid lacing.

The nose is subdued when making the inevitable comparison to Pliny, which has more going on with the seductive phenols and tropical infusion. There are floral hints in there along with some light clementine, and a piney presence of hop goodness in the spotlight.

Taste is an altogether different game: Blind Pig offers a splendid blast of clementine juiciness, some candy like malt sweetness, and a distinct pungent hop kick. Medium to full bodied, mothfeel is sticky & chewy hops, oily and flavorful. Smooth easy drinking with no alcohol detected.

Russian River knows how to make great liquids, and Blind Pig is a fine example. Get a bunch of these if you can get your hands on them, highly recommended.

On tap at the brewpub.

Beautiful pale color that has perfect clarity. Nice head with quality lacing.

Big pine, ruby red grapefruit, and grassy aromas. Uber aromatic. NICE!

Lots of pungent grapefruit pulp, orange rind, and pine flavors. Malt is understated yet noticeable. Not as much alcohol on the tongue as Pliny. Clean bitterness that makes this oh so drinkable.

If I did not love Pliny the Elder so much I would have this more often. One of the best IPAs ever made.

This is a pretty unassuming beer; no fancy tap handle, not a lot of hype surrounding it, no extreme ABV. Nonetheless, the more I drink it, the more impressed I am. The nose is fresh and fragrant, full of pine and grapefruit. The taste mirrors the nose, with an exceptionally rich, fresh, piney hop flavor. An underlying caramel sweetness is present, coming through right before the finish, giving it balance. The aftertaste is long, leaving a slight oily bitterness, but without any astringency. Quite possibly the best IPA around.

Pours a straw colored gold in color. About half a inch of head develops on the pour. Smell is very citrusy and juicy. Wonderful. Taste is even more citrusy and juicy hops than appear in the nose. Light, bitter, but exploding with juciness. I love this. It's an overused expression, but, I could drink this all day long and never tire of it. I might even go out on a limb and say that I'm enjoying this more then the PtE. Would love to have this around regularly.

My other RR IPA find at Beverage Warehouse last weekend. Bottled September 5, 2008. The bottle keeps telling me not to age it, so I figured I'd better drink it before I went out of town for a week. Fairly aggressive pour into a pint glass.

A: Clear amber with not much in the way of bubbles. The head is white, got about 2 fingers that fades to a thin film with a few fluffy bubbles. Lacing is nice.

S: Strong grapefruit hops and not much else.

T: Grapefruit hops dominate from start to finish, but I also note some floral, pine and grass hops in there as well. Not much sweetness to the malt, but there is some malt character-enough to give it a good balance at any rate.

MF: Medium-thin body with moderate carbonation. Hops are not that heavy on the tongue, even if they are a major part of the palette. Not much warming, and the alcohol isn't particularly noticeable.

D: Excellent West Coast IPA. Lots and lots of hops, but not too bitter to be undrinkable. Good balance for an IPA, which is impressive to me because the malt is so understated. I am a fan of grapefruit-dominant IPAs, so this is a winner for me. Low alcohol, smooth mouthfeel and great flavor make this an easy drinker. It was nice to find this here in LA, and hopefully it'll be something not to hard for find for the foreseeable future.

A- Translucent rusty copper color with a moderate fluffy off white head that leaves a good amount of lacing. Effervescence is on the level of Alka Seltzer.

S - Piney and citrus hops backed by a malt sweetness. Pine sol is the closest thing that comes to mind. Outstanding for an IPA of such a low weight.

T - Bitter. Pine and citrus hops are severely imbalanced towards pine. A solid malt backbone is overpowered by the bitterness of this brew. Very tasty indeed.

M - Moderate in body and lively in carbonation. Dries out the palate quite nicely without being too overbearing. Watery around the edges and as perfect as I could imagine.

D - I tend to think of this as a more sessionable version of Pliny with a comparable but pinier taste. Very enjoyable and won't knock you on your butt as quickly as its double IPA counterpart. After having both a bunch of times now I actually prefer Blind Pig. Yes, you will drink a lot of these and yes, you will still feel great in the morning.

I know Vinnie is not a big believer in "aged" IPA's, and generally I tend to agree with him. However, I recently came across this beer at my "home town" Market of Choice in West Linn, a store notorious for not rotating its stock in a timely manner. This particular bottle of Blind Pig was dated 7/29/08.

The beer pours a protypical peachy orange color with good head retention and lacing. On the nose, what can one say? This is IPA perfection. The beer has an incredible nose of wet tobacco, earth, allspice and hoppy bitterness. On the palate, this beer is off the charts. Maybe it's because the alcohol is so low (relatively), but this beer has not gained any malty sweetness, which is a typical problem for IPA's that have some bottle age. Instead.... this beer has flavors of fuji apple, wet tobacco, wet earth and a hint of cinnamon. As with the fresh version, the finish is just unbelievably dry and bitter.

IMO, a bit of bottle age has given this beer an element of complexity that the fresh version does not have. Not that there's anything wrong with fresh Blind Pig, but I'm amazed at the subtle flavor difference the beer seems to have undergone with some bottle age. Very, very impressive.

Mouthfeel is pretty light and drinkability is exceptional. As good as it gets when it comes to domestic IPA's. Excellent stuff.

Mad thanks to fetus for sending me a much sought after brew!! Been waiting a year to get my hands on one of these fine swine beers!

Poured from a 500 bottle into my SN pint glass. It is starting to sound like I need some new glassware! It had a bottled on date of 072308? No clue what that meant, so would love to know when it was truly bottled, but on to the review...an aggressive pour gave me a three finger off-white head that was nice and sticky. Beautiful lacing that lasted throughout! He looked a bit cloudy which I found a bit surprising. Was a deep golden yellow, almost auburn.

Damn did this smell heavenly! A perfect boquet of citrus hops and a bit of spice. This is what smelling balanced is all about.

The taste floored me. There was a sweetness up front with a nice little citrus-hop kick of bitterness in the back. It's backed up solidly with a touch of malt. I am impressed!

The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy...almost perfect!

Drinkability-Hell Yeah! I could put down a couple of these in a sitting and be perfectly content.

Overall, the sweetness in the taste is so damn good! I think that I found an IPA that I can sink my pallet into. Send me more ASAP!!!

A: Pours a coppery orange with about a finger of head that shrinks to a thin cap. Gradients of lacing expose each delicious sip.

S: Huge pine and grapefruit hoppyness assault the nose. I can't wait to see what my tongue thinks...

T: Resinous, piny, leafy hop flavors smother my palate. A slightly sweet malt background follows to balance the euphoric bitterness. Somehow, this brew is only rated at 72 IBU's. It tastes much hoppier than that to me.

M: Medium mouthfeel with just enough carbonation.

With all the attention Elder and Younger get, it's easy to forget just how good this is. In fact, having recently been afforded the opportunity to try it, I think I like it about as much as I like the Elder. From notes, dutifully punched in on the iPhone:

Pale gold, nice head.

Aroma kicks ass - green mango, passionfruit, some grapefruit, usual piney hop aromas, just with more depth....wow!

Taste follows nose with mango, tropical fruit, all kinds of pine....wonderful. Yeast very clean, and malt doesn't get in the way much here. Top-shelf IPA for this strength.

Standard IPA soapy feel.

Super-drinkable, no question!

On tap at Toronado in SF, poured into a pint glass. Small head leaves some sticky, resinous, soapy lacing stuck to the side of the glass. Aroma is straight up pine and grapefruit. Taste follows suit, delicious hop bitterness, like Pliny toned down a notch. Any time Pliny is being used as a reference point, it's a damn good thing. Very easy to drink and totally delicious.

On tap at Russian River

A - Amber; not much head, but good lacing

S - Hops reminiscent of cat urine and grapefruit are present in full force, but there is more - a fair amount of honey is joined by the occasional scent of barnyard funk. Not your typical IPA.

T - Bitter citrus rules the front end and is complimented by a slight oaky quality. In the following moments, fragrant, floral hops burst through and pair with sweet orange notes and other malt flavors. A fantastically bitter finish seals the deal; it feels as if fresh grapefruit is stuck in my teeth.

M - Medium-bodied, perfect amount of carbonation, and a pronounced bitter edge. It doesn't get better for me.

D - All of this flavor, yet nothing to keep from drinking one after the other. If I lived in an area with distribution, there would be many a strictly Blind Pig night...

This was my first (and second and third) time having Blind Pig fresh, and it blew away my previous, albeit amazing, experience. If this isn't my favorite IPA, I'm not sure what is.
